Imagine, we have now been in Europe for a good 13 days....few of them on the road...and few of them, finally relaxing, enjoying great food and family time back in Luxembourg. And tomorrow morning, I'm back on...a plane! But before this, one more blog about Brussels. Little reminder...Leslie and Tiffany do have a Belgian passport. They may have never lived here...well...not anymore as we are spending 2 months in the country next door. So my aim is to give them as many "roots" I can from where their Dad is from. So in a few days....and there are more to come, I'm giving them all the school trips they would have done over 12 years at school in Belgium. Trust me, I don't know who has more fun...them enjoying those things for the first time...or me, ... read more

Last year we made a last minute decision to head to Antwerp for chocolate and waffles as our last stop of our trip, so when we were trying to decide what would be the last stop on this trip we chose to hit up Belgium again! We were a little surprised when we left the Nord station that we had to walk through a red light district and past a couple of abandoned boarded-up buildings but our hotel in the area was still okay. Even though we were leaving back to Canada in only a couple of days, we still needed to find the Laundromat in this hood to have enough clothes to last us until our flights. After getting a few things washed up we headed on a walking tour that our hotel staff had ... read more

I want to start out by thanking those of you who have been sending angry emails and texts demanding a new blog. Its been a bit of a wait, but here it is. For those who have not been following along, I have been traveling with the Stone Family (or parts thereof) for the last several weeks. If you are interested in those adventures I urge you to take a look at www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/The-Stone-Family/ So I am in Brussels (yep the one in Belgium) and yesterday I sent Allison and Tyler Stone home. What a weight off my shoulders. I don't have ninos of my own, and frankly I don't know how those of you with ninos do it ... I am exhausted. I am sure its not true for all ninos, but these two were a ... read more

This will be Allie and Tyler's last blog from Europe. Yesterday we got up early in Lucerne and got the first train to Basel. From Basel we took the fast train to Paris, where we switched trains for Brussels, Belgium. We have really enjoyed the trains. In Brussels we checked into the world famous "Holiday Inn, Brussels Airport" It is amazing how all international airports and the areas around them look the same. Honest to God, when we walked to the Metro Station to take a train into central Brussels, it looked a lot like Fitchburg. Brussels looks and feels a lot like Paris, and like Paris it has a thriving city center filled with museums, cafes, plazas and great "street life." We had a nice dinner at a sidwalk cafe and then continued to explore ... read more

I was at this funky bar. Don't ask me where it was and what was the name because I don't remember. It was one of those nights you like to tell your pals about without really knowing if what you remember of it, really happen. There was a train in the bar and they were playing this catchy electroswing. I had a drink or two too many. To be really honest, I probably had ten or fifteen too many, but you know ... what's the point in denying it. I like my drinks. So, there I was in a bar, or on a train in a bar sipping another of those great Belgian beers, when I saw her. She was standing there with her friends, about ten meters away. I don't remember her name, but I ... read more

We set off in the sunshine after a reasonable last night in the Premiere Classe hotel. These budget hotels have been quite good for the type of journey we were doing but their WiFi connection was so bad, we had to resort to uploading the photos for the blog via the mobile phone connection a few times. The route from Troyes was almost due north for a good stretch and we were expecting to drive through heavy rain for most of the day, given the weather forecasts we had seen. In actual fact, the roads were dry and clear and we made good progress, stopping near Reims for the first refreshment break. We also needed fuel for the last time in France and resorted to motorway service station prices for the first time this trip. We ... read more

We arrived in Belgium on the 16th May, it was raining, wet, cold and a rather sad looking city. There was really only one reason we were passing through Belgium and it was due to Laura having a old univeristy freind she had promised to one day visit in Europe. So we did. The first day was a friday so we didnt do much - we decided to go and watch the movie, The Great Gatsby, at the movies as it was just so miserible outside. And that was a good choice as not only was it a great movie but we also treated ourselves to popcorn mmm. That night I got food poisoning another awesome thing to add to this city, we had plans to meet up with Erik for dinner so I insisted Laura ... read more

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761No traffic noise last night but at 2:45 some people were shouting and singing and then, of course, I had a hard time falling asleep again. I did sleep eventually, but then the garbage men came. I'll give you three guesses as to where the Dumpsters are situated. I'm hoping that one of these nights I'll sleep all the way through just out of sheer exhaustion! We met our local guide Christian this morning for a walking tour. He took us up the hill to the new town to see the St. Michel cathedral, a pretty park with espaliered linden trees, the Belgian Parliament, and the Palais Royale (where the king has his offices). The Belgian flag was flying, so that means the king is somewhere in the country. The current king, Albert II, is ... read more

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761My hopes that night three wouldn't be so bad were dashed around 2:45 a.m. I woke up and could not get back to sleep. Really, the traffic noise was unbelievable. I even had two windows: the one that probably is original to the building and then a storm-type window on the inside, both of which were closed. I tried breathing deeply, which just makes me too conscious of my breathing, and I tried counting slowly backward from 100, which I guess only works if there's an anesthesiologist nearby. It's awful to wake up feeling exhausted.I decided to forgo the egg this morning. But I was entertained by a woman trying to eat a soft-boiled egg. Her egg cup kept tipping over.I left the hotel (where I will likely never stay again, even though it ... read more

Do you know that to burn off 1 fried chicken breast you’ll need to bike for an hour? Two slices of pepperoni pizza translated to 2.5 hours of climbing the stairs. While to burn off cheese burger and fries; that require over 2 hours in the elliptical machine. I’m not one of those girls who think carbs are sinful and only eat celery sticks for dinner. I’m someone who enjoyed my oxtail soup and chili crabs, but I also go to the gym 2-3 times a week. I don’t mind to indulge, but the food better be good. Or else it won’t worth the compensating exercise. So I ponder there in front of the waffle stall; thinking to myself whether this is worth it and how many hours of running would that waffle translated to. I’m ... read more
