To be fair, Brussels never really stood a chance. I want to say that I didn’t have a bias coming into this city, but that would be a lie. Prior to the trip, every time I mentioned that I was going to Belgium, people would say things like, “Well, you’re going to Bruges, right?” or “Make sure you spend a lot of time in Bruges.” Nothing about Brussels. In fact, I started to get the sense that most people wanted to tell me to skip Brussels, but kept quiet. We also just had the most incredible week – five days in Paris with my family celebrating Mom’s big birthday and then Bruges, one of the most enchanting cities I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. Like I said, it really seemed like Brussels didn’t really ... read more

Hopped on Eurostar for an overnight trip to Brussels - which after a somewhat inauspicious start turned into a very enjoyable weekend taking in elements of Belgian culture (beer) and history (also beer). Brussels is famous (apparently) for many things - it has the highest number of comic artists per capita in the world - this is the place that gave rise to Tintin, Asterix and the Smurfs) as well as being the country that invented the stock exchange - but we had to get there first. London St Pancras international is a grand terminus from which to commence any rail trip in the UK and did not disappoint. In particular there are some fantastic sculptures, including my favourite piece of artwork of the trip so far, located on the upper level. An imposing 9m tall, ... read more

Brussels 10 - 18 July 2014 14 July Monday Paris on to Brussels We woke thinking we had plenty of time, but soon discovered that our train was an hour earlier than anticipated due to Dave's misread of the train ticket (he looked at the time of day he purchased the ticket in Perth instead of the train departure time), so we had a mild panic to get to Gare du Nord. It was Bastille Day public holiday and roads were closed for the parade. There were no taxis available from hotel, but the concierge suggested we walk to the rank at Rue de Bac. Fortune was smiling upon us. We made it to station in time but there had been no time for postage stamps or breakfast. Our train was more up market than that ... read more

De bestuurder steekt ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Today's exploration of Brussels is at an end. So far me and Andreas are in agreement, Brussels is nice and has a lot to offer, but we both liked Amsterdam better. There is unfortunately quite some graffiti here, including on the monuments and it always makes me so sad to see such disrespect for a nations culture, history and heritage. A lot of the magnificent structures here are unfortunately in a state of disrepair and it hurts to watch such grandeur crumbling. We have seen some though that are being repaired, so at least there is hope for it for the future, perhaps next visit will be better. We started this day by walking from Dimitri's to the massive Atomium, it's a huge structure built in the shape of an atom and ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! Our first day here in Brussels went quite well I'd say, although we didn't really get around that much to be honest. The bus-ride went without incident and we arrived according to schedule. However if felt like we were dropped a bit 'off' so to speak (although that was probably just us though, in reality it was probably in a quite good spot). Just wandering around though we somehow found our way to the train station where we could easily get our bearing again. We began by checking out the Albertine Square with the statue of King Albert I, the third King of Belgium, who fought in World War I and became a Belgian hero when he liberated it from the German occupation. He fought bravely alongside his soldiers and his wife, ... read more

After the plane landing we found our way to the train, and we bought tickets for the train* heading into Brussels and told us which platform to go to to catch the train. I asked for a map of the metro, and he seemed rather confounded as to why I would need that. Well, this was the train heading into Brussels, so the map did not help us much, except to help us locate at train station that would connect with a train stop, except that there were no stops displaced on the screen telling the stops of this train. We were looking for Gare Midi, but it was not among the stops listed. Just before the stop that we needed to take, I starting asking Thomas about whether we should take Gare Central (since it ... read more
