Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761So yesterday I thought Brussels would not have enough to offer for more than one day. I was mostly right, unless you want to go to a lot of museums. I don't want to do that so one day was fine for me.First, the Novotel has a huge buffet breakfast! Yogurts, veggies, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, potato cakes, cereals, pastries of all kinds, breads of all kinds and pancakes. There was a variety of juices, chocolate and regular milk and a coffee machine that looked fancy but I did not use. I really enjoy the yogurt that is part of the breakfast. I had it at the last two hotels as well with a variety of fruits to put on it. Here there were apricot halves that seemed to be soaked ... read more

Bon jour from Brussels! After a 3.5 hour train ride, we arrived in Brussels at 1330. We continued our theme from Frankfurt and we stepped out of the train station into the red light district. Andrew and I hiked through a number of interesting individuals into a much better area and found our hotel. And what a hotel! Hotelbloom! (that is the actual name) is a spectacular place that is a work of art. Creativity is everywhere. Each room is decorated by a different European artist, so every one is unique. I have posted a picture of the room but suggest you look up the website for the full effect. The room itself is huge and extremely comfortable. After settling in, we headed for the Grand Place, the center of the old town and main tourist ... read more

Geo: 50.8371, 4.36761Today I sadly said good-bye to Brugge after spending three wonderful days in this beautiful city. This morning I wandered to some of my favorite places and also through a small park I had not visited before. It was nice to walk along the canals before the boat tours were out as I was able to see the reflections of the buildings in the water. I had to check out of the hotel by 11, but left my bags as I had no specific timetable for catching my train to Brussels.I wandered into a chocolate shop and bought a small sampling to try. They require a minimum of 5 pieces so that is what I got. I tried passionfruit, coconut, violet, orange and tiramisu. Some were milk chocolate, some dark chocolate and some white ... read more

Thoughts on countries so far: Scotland - Cold, windy, beautifuly! Drive on the wrong side. People are friendly. Galic is weird! Really like Irn Bru soda! Neil, our guide rocks! Germany - Warmer, but windy on the Rhine. Enchanting towns. Everyone rides bicycles. Inexpensive for a tourist area. Dogs are everywhere... even restaurants, stores, and train stations! Luxembourg - It may be the country with the highest income per capita in the world, but they don't keep their streets and public places very clean! Spend some money on public maintenance! Clothing... women's at least, is expensive! Lower Luxembourg City (Base?) is quite pretty. Brussels - Very diverse in people and buildings. A lot of historical places. European Capital, and buildings to show for it. Never seen so many Kebap or Doner meat restaurants. Waffles are grrrreat! ... read more

Yesterday was our last full day in Brussels. Today we take the train to Amsterdam. Yesterday was another beautiful sunny day in Brussels. We did a lot of walking around and went to the musical instrument museum. That museum has a variety of instruments from all over the world. You wear a headset that is connected to a widget that plays a sample of whichever instrument you are standing in front of. It works pretty well as long as you are a person who can resist the temptation to fiddle with the buttons on the widget. I think I might be a fiddler. One great thing I got out of the experience is that I now know what a hurdy gurdy sounds like. After the musical instrument museum we circumnavigated the royal palace. It is a ... read more

Though the forecast was for rain, it was a mostly sunny, breezy day. We had another good run on the Brussels underground today. (Good run = no errors, backtracks, or missed stops.) Brendan had a full day planned for us. We went first to the Royal Army and Military History Museum. It turned out to be much larger and more elaborate than we expected. Most of the signs and write-ups were dual language French and Dutch so we opted for the audio tour widgets that are recorded in English. This turned out to be great as that provided much more info than was on the signs. (How could we tell? We just could.) For example I now know all about the lineage of the monarchy and what each one looked like. After that we headed off ... read more

Today we decided to go at a more leisurely pace. after breakfast we took the Metro (subway) out to the site of the 1958 world expo. (We haven't suddendly picked up French, and Dutch is hard to read let alone pronounce, so navigation through the Brussels under ground keeps on our toes. Fortunately we are pretty good at pattern recognition and can match up words on signs to words on maps. We have also learned a few of the practicalities. For instance, the subway car doors don't automatically open when the train stops. Whether you are getting on or off, you have to pull on the handle yourself to open the door.) Our first stop was the Atomium. This is a gigantic model of an iron crystal. It's analogous to the Space Needle in Seattle. There ... read more

Walking around Brussels is easy and fun. There are lots of great sites near our hotel - interesting arvhitecture, statues, fountains, and more. There are always tons of other folks out walking too. Today was sunny and the humidity was higher than we are used to so even at 60 degree out we felt warmer than we usually like. We walked from our hotel up to Grand Place. This is a very large cobblestone plaza bordered by large beautiful buldings. There was a flower market in the middle and lots of families were there. While there, we visited the city museum. It was great. Even though there was quite a crowd outside, the museum was lightly attended. It presents a history of Brussels in art, sculpture, and artifacts. The part we liked the best was the ... read more
