JC and our "bedroom"
JC and our "bedroom" Thoughts on countries so far:
Scotland - Cold, windy, beautifuly! Drive on the wrong side. People are friendly. Galic is weird! Really like Irn Bru soda! Neil, our guide rocks!
Germany - Warmer, but windy on the Rhine. Enchanting towns. Everyone rides bicycles. Inexpensive for a tourist area. Dogs are everywhere... even restaurants, stores, and train stations!
Luxembourg - It may be the country with the highest income per capita in the world, but they don't keep their streets and public places very clean! Spend some money on public maintenance! Clothing... women's at least, is expensive! Lower Luxembourg City (Base?) is quite pretty.
Brussels - Very diverse in people and buildings. A lot of historical places. European Captial, and buildings to show for it. Never seen so many Kebap or Doner meat restaurants. Waffles are grrrreat! Crepes good too. Need more than a couple days to really explore. Transportation is varied, plentiful, and confusing.
Forms of transportation taken this trip - Walking (a lot!), taxi, bus, train, tram, metro, boat, plane. Not planning to cycle.
First of all, let me apologize for not submitting this blog last night, but I started falling asleep
Our hall in hostel
Our hall in hostel. Never seen one so wide! at the keyboard. I've included photos of the hostel this time. We woke up a bit late, gulped down a couple of coffees (this hostel didn't include breakfast and they want 7.90 Euros each for it!), and hit the streets. Today we planned on doing the City Sightseeing Bus Tour, after some more shopping. We tried a waffle from one of the numerous little shops all around town, with strawberries and whipped cream. It was pretty good, but not the same as the fancier one we'd had yesterday, which seemed much lighter or airier. Soon after noon, we found a City Sightseeing Bus stop, climbed aboard and did most of the Line 1 route out to the Atomium and the National Basilica, then since it was 2pm and we still hadn't really eaten anything but the waffle, we decided to get off the bus closeish to the hostel and head back to unload our gifts, have some lunch, and then grab the sightseeing bus. I had a salad left over from last night which Manoli ate, and I bought a mortadella sandwich from the hostel.
We headed back out, picked up the tour bus at the same stop we'd
Inside Meininger Hostel
Lounge, kitchen, and check-in area of Meininger Hostel gotten off at and rode it to Gare Central where we could change tour buses to Line 2. Line 2 took us out to the big Cinquantenaire Park, the Royal Palace, and the European Union headquarters area before returning to Gare Central. Although the City Sightseeing tour bus was a bit expensive at 22 Euros each, it did give us a good idea of what was in Brussels and some photo opportunities. If we had to do it over again, we'd probably buy a 2-day ticket and do more hopping on and off for closer exploring and to visit some of the museums. There is a lot to see in Brussels alone, much less Belgium.
We walked back to the Royal Palace for some better photos, then wandered around until a bit after 6pm when we discovered an interesting looking place for dinner, La Creperie. We both liked the idea of crepes, so we decided to give it a try. It was a small hole-in-the-wall sort of place, but cozy with good food. Manoli ordered a mushroom, cheese and cream sauce crepe and I had a ham, cheese, asparagus and cream sauce crepe. Both were delicious, and not too
Meininger Hostel (Hotel)
Meininger Hostel (Hotel) expensive at just under 20 Euros with a cappuccino for yours truly. We returned to the hostel to relax while watching some NetFlix. I ended up getting too sleepy afterwards to finish this blog, so I am doing it the next day after our daily activities.
I was still trying to decide whether to spend Sunday exploring Waterloo or go to see Mini-Europe, but ended up figuring although I'd enjoy either one, Manoli would probably enjoy Mini-Europe more, so that's what the next blog, later today will describe.
