We made our way from Ghent to Antwerp, Belgium which was a nice short 45 min drive. Found a great campsite on the opposite side of the Schelde river to the City. The weather was really nice and hot so we hopped on the bikes and rode over to the city. We had to go down a large elevator to a tunnel below the river then ride across to the other side. Was really quite cool. We just walked around the city and had a few beers down by the river in the sun. We then went to a really busy Italian restaurant close to the city square for dinner. After that we went back to the campground and went for a walk by the river and watched the sunset. The next day we just chilled ... read more

Hi you all! :) Still in Belgium! I took out my backpackersbackpack yesterday and I must say that I'm not quite sure how I'll manage to put all my lugage in it :D but hey, still about 12 days to figure that out, right? I have never used a backpack, so it's kind of exciting! I'm getting way too excited about the trip about now! It's really getting so close! After my exam today I'm gonna do some shopping with my mom to buy some stuff I'll probably need like new clothes and things. Just heard on the news that Obama is rather definitely the democratic president candidate for the states. I'm curious how much of the presidential-fever will show while I'm in the USA. it might be quite interesting! Okay, I have to continue my ... read more

Hoi hoi!

Today is our last full day in Belgium. We are pretty much just relaxing and hanging out. We woke up late anyway after a night on the town last night. Yesterday during the day, Ria, Noah, and I just kinda strolled the streets in the center of town got a waffle and had a beer. It was probably the nicest weather yet, so it was real nice just to sit outside this restaurant and people-watch. We headed home by mid-afternoon to hang out with Ludo at the house. For dinner, Ludo BBQed for us. They had two of their neighbors over for it, this one woman whos name I forget, and then Pierre, this older fellow who knows all the bars and clubs in town. He has three sons who are my age and older and ... read more

Greetings from Hoboken (town we've been in)! Yesterday, was quite an interesting day as usual. Let me start by talking about something I haven't written much about... FOOD! Well, I've been trying a lot of new (and non-vegetarian) foods, including frog legs, escargot, horse meat, delicious sausage, whitloof, chocolates, and many beers and cheeses. Each morning for breakfast we usually have bread with different spreads, nutella, different cheeses (mmm!), smoked salmon spread, cheese & nutella together (really good!), accompanied with a glass of OJ and a cup of coffee. Each day both or either Ludo and Ria have taken time off of work to take us around. Ludo is a teacher at a school, so we're real thankful he could do that. Yesterday morning, Ludo took Noah and I to the Breendonk Concentration Camp which wasn't ... read more

Last night was pretty fun. We were doing shots of whisky and playing dice poker with Ludo before dinner. Then, once again I broke my 2.5 year vegetarianism. Ria and Ludo made this cheese, ham, and whitloof dish, a typical Flemish dish. That was the most meat I've eaten in a long time. During the day, we went to my Pit's old house and the birthtown of my Uncle Al, Vrasene I think it was called. Then we went to Ria's aunt's house deep in the country, actually in Holland. It was really pretty there. I'll try to get some pictures uploaded soon. Ria's aunt could hardly speak a lick of English, but still insisted on having a conversation. I understood she met my mother before. Then she brought out some beer. I looked at my ... read more

Europe is just awesome. I just think I'm so glad just to be out of the country. After about 18 hours of traveling through 2 stopovers, we made it to my cousin Ria's in Antwerp, Belgium. Ria and her daughter Evy picked us up from the airport, we dropped our stuff off, then it was off to try some Belgian beer (don't worry, it was slightly past noon). Of course, everything we tried was amazing. Then we met up with Evy's girlfriend and Ria's husband Ludo and went for some more drinks. We had a late lunch at this restaurant where the chef would prepare a small dish and put it on this conveyor belt to go around the little restaurant. It was similar to a baggage claim carousel in an airport (or maybe I'm just ... read more

Actually, we went to Bruges, but it is not on the pick list. We took a train from Amsterdam to Antwerp and then changed trains to Bruges. Of course, Andrea knew people on our train car for the first leg. We are traveling with an insane amount of luggage so we broke down and took the first Taxi instead of walking ten minutes on medieval cobble stone to our apartment. We would never have found it on our own. Bruges is much bigger than we thought, an quite frankly a confusing maze of streets. We explored, shopped in the market, climbed the bell tour, toured the canals by boat, ate waffles, shopped for chocolate, sampled Belgium beer and (finally!) toured a brewery (ZOT).... read more
