Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296The day after we sailed from Vienna, we entered the Wachau valley, a very picturesque stretch of the Danube lined by vineyards and small villages with churches and monasteries. Very relaxing to sit on the sun deck, down a Bavarian beer and watch the world go by.The ship moored up at the town of Melk at which a monastery was founded 900 years ago. Several times the building was destroyed by fires and war but was rebuilt and is now mostly an 18th century building with a beautiful baroque church. It also has a stunning very old library and a beautiful marble hall. Outside there are gardens and courtyards and the old town is a short walk down between the monastery and the river. Once more we have time to sit in the sun ... read more

It was worth the wait. After hunkering down the night before dodging driving rain, lightening storms, snow and the odd flying lawn chair; this morning we woke up to a calm serene blanket of snow. We waited until noon for most of the snow to melt off and had one of our best days riding through the Alps! Up and down mountain roads , through quaint villages and lush meadows I couldn't stop smiling.... read more

When you're embarking on 580 km to your destination in a bus, I guess you'd think the weather wouldn't matter much. However, this part of our journey involved some of the most beautiful scenery of any of our days of travel on this tour, so it was a shame that we had rain for most of the day. Passing from Budapest to well into Austria, it was pretty much flat farmland and reading a book helped to while away the first few hours. We then entered Austria's Wachau Valley, picture-postcard villages and vineyards along a lovely stretch of the Danube, edged along one side by mountains. Even in the rain, in this area you could see why the Danube is referred to as "blue". At lunchtime, we stopped at Melk Abbey, a Benedictine abbey listed as ... read more

St Polten (40 km west of Vienna) is the capital of Lower Austria and it has some fine examples of medieval buildings plus Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. However, what I loved about this town were the Art Nouveau (or Jugendstil) buildings that we discovered whilst walking around, as well as the modern cultural precinct comprising buildings of glass, metal and steel designed by brilliant architects like Ernst Hoffman. An absolute wonderful example of the Jugendstil period is the Stöhr House on the corner of the main pedestrianized street opposite the railway station. This was built in 1899 and designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich who also built the Vienna Secession building. The building was home to a Dr. Hermann Stöhr, St. Pölten hospital's first chief physician. It just so happened that the Doctor's brother, Ernst Stöhr was ... read more

We arrived in Krems an der Donau on Saturday afternoon and after settling into our hotel room, walked down the main street of the town. The shops were open as were the wine bars and restaurants. Krems is situated at the beginning of the Wachau (Eastern part), a beautiful part of the Danube Valley and on the confluence of the Krems and Danube Rivers. The Wachau valley is well-known for it's good wines, especially white wines and in particular Grüner Veltliner (Perfect Stranger). I found a link to Australia with this wine on the internet: “The Hesketh family, which has worked in many areas of the wine industry, normally focuses on South Australian wines. In this instance, it teamed with Bertold Salomon, of Austria's famous Salomon Undhof winery, to source a wine made of grapes from ... read more

Geo: 48.3833, 15.5167Its been my longest trip ever. Today marks my hundredth blog entry of the trip; Over 20,000 words, over 1,000 photos uploaded, four months, eighteen counties, so far, by plane, train, car, ship and bus. Its not been easy at times, its time consuming especially via my Android tablet. Ultimately, worthwhile though, to document the detail of this worthy adventure. We've met new people, tasted new things, heard new languages, seen amazing places and experienced enough for a lifetime! Today was just another great experience. Cycling, beautiful scenery, swimming and wine tasting. Its a winning combination! We met up with the days tour group in the north of Vienna at 9am. It was a small, dual nationality group; 9 Americans and 7 Australians, which made communication pretty easy. One American couple was in their ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296First stop for the day was to visit Melk Abbey. We had a personal guided tour of the Abbey in English, being the only English speaking tourists at that time. The guide was very knowledgeable. After morning tea in Melk, we drove towards Krems alongside the River Danube, through the Wachau Valley. We stopped off at Burg Aggstein, a castle built in the early part of the 12th century. The castle was built by the Kuenringer family by Manegold III Aggsbach Getbeen. Its notoriety was due to the "robber barons" of Burg Aggstein who exacted tolls from passing ships and imprisoned their rivals for ransom and tied them to a rock ledge, all the time threatening to kill them by throwing them into the gorge. The castle was built about 91 metres above the river ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296We are staying in the small town of Emmersdorf, which is directly opposite the town of Melk, which has the world famous Melk Abbey as it's key attraction. From our balcony, we have a clear view of the Abbey. Melk Abbey financed it's complete renovation in 1997 through sale of it's original Gutenburg Bible to Harvard University.Last night we drove to a small Austrian town in the hills and had authentic Austrian cuisine. We were literally the only people in the restaurant who could speak any English. Today we caught the Schiff (Ship) from Emmersdorf to Krems down the Danube River, a distance of some forty kilometres down the Wachau Valley. The Wachau is the section of the river where all of the River Cruise scenes of lofty disused castles are taken. We passed ... read more
