My apologies to anyone who receives this travel blog twice but some people have said they did not receive it in their mailbox. I am attempting to repost the blog as a "public" post and hope that my friends and family will now be able to read about my adventure so far. Thank you. I have to start off by thanking Michael, Petra, Hannah, Maggie and Johannes (sorry Johannes but someone has to go last) for being so wonderful by allowing me to stay with them in lovely Klingfurth and for being so accommodating and generous with their time to ensure I am fully occupied and enjoying every single moment. Another special thank you to Hannah who has graciously given up her own room for me to stay in while here. My trip started off with ... read more

When we wake up, we are in Dürstein, a small town (population 900) on the west bank of the Danube. I opt to make a solo trek into Dürstein. It's only about a 10-minute walk along the river. Dürstein is almost ridiculously picturesque. The first thing you notice is the Blue Tower, part of a modest but beautiful little church. But Dürstein is a bit like a game of Myst. How do you get from the path along the river into the town? All you see are walls. Oh, there's a ramp that leads to a small archway that grants you access. Now which way? Wandering around I find a lovely abbey, then backtrack to discover a small palace that is now a 5-star hotel. As in any game, there has to be a goal, and ... read more

I started off the morning at Zum Kirchenwirt in the usual manner: soft boiled egg, hard roll, fresh butter, a couple of slices of cheese and sandwich meats washed down with orange juice. Hot chocolate was out of the question on these increasingly warmer days. Gail worked the opposite side of the buffet table loading up with fruit and yoghurt. Today's drive should take two hours to get from Kellburg to our accommodations at a working farm outside of Melk, Austria. But like Ike and Tina Turner, we never do anything nice and easy. The quickest route is usually the boring route so I aimed the X1 in the general direction of Melk instead of listening to the onboard GPS. I can't say we discovered anything all that exciting but along the way we found plenty ... read more

This morning we woke to find the Viking Gullweig tied up alongside a small jetty with a prominent sign telling us we had arrived in Krems. Krems or to give it its proper name, Krems an der Donau is a small town about 70km west of Vienna with a modest population of just under 24,000. Although Krems was first mentioned in a document in 985, settlers were probably around long before that as a grave dating back over 27,000 years was found here making it the oldest grave in Austria. This morning’s excursion was to a working monastery known as Gottweig Abbey. Roisin, Kate and Carla had decided to give this tour a miss so I was on my own. As I mentioned in the previous blog, an audio receiver could be found in each cabin ... read more

Confucious he say " Everything has beauty but not everyone sees it" Sometimes I think that describes us when we see something Baroque. It goes over our heads. The over egging of the decoration. Heavy and dark. Not to our tastes. Sometimes though we have to bite the bullet and accept it for what it is. We left Budapest early and found our route going out to be less fraught than the way coming in. None of the heavy traffic, none of the trams just a quiet walk in the park sort of journey. We were heading to Austria and home. I guess in the end we had had enough of the lousy weather and made the decision not to waste precious holiday time just prattling about doing nothing. There was a five day journey home ... read more

Today we will visit Melk Abbey (I cannot believe I've never heard of this UNESCO sight until this trip) and then cruise down the Wauchu Valley (we're told it's the most picturesque scenery in the world) at the other end of the Valley is the town of Durnstein where we will anchor and visit as well. Melk Abbey: The Melk Abbey. Is a Benedictine Abbey built in the Baroque style high above the town of Melk in lower Austria which is built on a high outcropping of rocks overlooking the Danube. It was founded in 1089 When Leopoldo II gave one of his castles to Benedictine monks from Lambach Abbey which was a monastic school. The Abbey we toured today was built in 1736. Beautiful frescos abound all around the Abbey. Our tour guide was Stephanie ... read more

Tom and I wanted to walk around the town of Melk after touring the Abbey so rather than getting back on the bus we headed towards the sign that said "altstadt" which means old town in English. Down, down, down the roughly hewn rock stairs we went. Our guides promised it would be easy to get back to the ship on our own. When we were at the top of the Abbey we were shown the path to take and which bridge to cross to get back. She told us there would be yellow tiles to follow and stay to the right. The tiles would eventually be blue but just keep to the right.....Remember she said "right is right and left is lost." As we headed down towards old town within the cobbled streets were yellow ... read more
