My journey continues and since my last blog I have crossed the border from Germany into Austria. Throughout the cycle ride I have been privy to some fantastic scenery, met some fascinating people and have enjoyed some great experiences along the way. My first tales are really about the people you meet along a trip like this. I will leave the mixed sauna story till the end. I have been very fortunate to have resided in some wonderful places since leaving Portsmouth on 1 March. One such place is a youth hostel in Germany called Saldenburg castle, quite close to the Austrian border. Having introduced myself to the Youth Hostel Leader she told me, that for mealtimes, I could sit on a table with a young Lady and her daughter rather than sitting by myself. The ... read more

Woke up in Melk for the tour of the Abbey. Stunning Baroque architecture, golden artifacts, art works and cathedral were we listened to the beautiful original organ being played. I always feel sorry for the relics of the saints dressed up in elaborate costumes laying about in glass cases trying to stay looking good for the rest of eternity. Afterwards we walked back through the lovely little village and through the woods to the boat where the crew had the BBQ fired up. After lunch the Tour de Wachu paleton (21) helmeted up for their 32km bike road through this georgeous valley another UNESCO site rivaled only by the Rhine Valley. My choice was to stay on board for the commentary and the tasting of the wine grown in this region called grulier (green) veltliner. (very ... read more

From our tour leaders schedule, think that Sue Puddey now also departed from Australian shores - safe journey Sue. From the 17th - 22nd August the majority of the team will then be underway. Bernie and Gail are still meandering along the Danube - today we stopped in this pretty little village 'Durnstein' truly beautiful, and here we climbed to the top of the hill to find a castle where Richard the Lionheart was held captive for a period during the crusades in 1158. Do let's hear from you all so that I can share with the gang your adventures along the way. Click on the photo caption to see more pics!... read more

We departed the Salzburg Sheraton and headed south into the alps. We had a full morning of driving. Our principal destination was the The Grossglockner High Alpine Road (Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße). It is a panoramic road in Austria. It ascends Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain. There are a number of hair pin turns on the way to the top – approximately 2500 metres. The pass just recently opened for the season, but there is still plenty of snow on the top. At points the narrow road is lined by up to 10 feet of snow on either side. At the top there is a small visitor centre. We were amazed to see the number of cyclists tackling this gruelling climb. It was truly one of the most exhilarating drives I have ever taken. Josh was delighted to hurl a ... read more

Hello so tomorrow we are off to Munich, got a very long jounrey to a whole new country! another one to tick of the list, we are leaving here at 11am and will arrive in Munich at 6.30 and are then staying in a hostel, my very first hostel experience. We will stay there 2 nights and the next stop is a small town called Tutzing which is a 30min train jounrey and will be staying with a couple who run a theraputic horse riding school for disabled children. We have decided not to put time limits on placements and instead just go with the flow, after all we was meant to leave here about 10 days ago but wanted to extend our stay. The next few days are going to be expensive as lots of ... read more
