March 20, 2010 Today was definitely an entertaining day full of crazy coincidences and connections - most of which happened in the evening . . . We’ll begin with a quick overview of the day: We slept until noon, which meant our day began with a deli lunch followed by beach time. We ventured out on the paddle bikes - 2 pontoons and a bike with a paddleboat paddle. More work than it looks but fun and a decent workout. Since we had to stay in the bay, we got a nice view of all the beautiful homes on the beach front (stay tuned for pics - they were taken from our water camera). From the ocean we jumped to the hot tub and the pool - it was an afternoon of lounging at its best. ... read more

March 19, 2010 I woke up early this morning and sat in the living room of our little cottage working to the sound of the waves . . . Sean slept right up until check-out at 11. We said good-bye to Gallows and caught a safari taxi to the Westin Resort about a mile North on the outskirts of town. As we drove away we realized the true benefit of Gallows - being so close to the downtown. But as we drove up to the Westin, we realized its’ benefits as well - being right on the beach with a huge pool and hot tub. Since our room wasn’t ready due to our early arrival, we decided to explore the grounds. Iguanas are everywhere! Though creepy, they seem to be used to people and thus do ... read more

March 18, 2010 Okay . . . so we were quick to judge . . . it’s true. Gallows Point is a nice resort if you want to be close to town and is definitely adorable in that bed and breakfast kind of way. That said, there’s still no beach, no pool, and pretty much shuts down around 10 PM. Keep in mind - we are New Yorkers who keep strange hours, and we are water sport lovers who vacation in the Caribbean so we can wave-run, paddle boat, snorkle and surf. So we were lucky, Expedia and Gallows were ever so gracious in allowing us to switch resorts -2 nights total at Gallows and then on to the Westin tomorrow. Today was so much fun. We decided we would go for a run to Caneel ... read more

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 Well, off to another Caribbean adventure . . . you didn’t think we’d actually try it again, did you? First of all, we said no ships this time (not sure if we will actually ever cruise again). We decided to go to St. John because we wanted somewhere warm, quick and close. My friend Jane actually made the bold statement that St. John is better than Hawaii . . . that definitely intrigued us, as Kauai is our dream home spot. So we made it out to JFK by 5:30 am . . . both of us on maybe 2 hours of sleep . . . but we were there! It’s a quick three and a half hour flight to St. Thomas with no one on the plane so had our own ... read more

Puerto Rico and Culebra again. We drove to San Juan to pick Bruce up from the airport…we got so lost coming back, it was about 11.20pm and we did seem to have strayed into a dodgy end of the sprawling city. We stopped by a police car which was stopping another car; Bruce jumped out and told him we were sooo lost. Very kindly he said follow me, and with the siren and lights on we were escorted across the city to the right road. Every hundred yards, there was a police car with some people spread-eagled across the bonnets, and hands up on the roof. We did find the road to Humanacoa, and finally Palmas del mar. It was good to get back, they came with a golf cart for Bruce’s bag and we were ... read more

Today we were in St. Thomas. We’d originally planned to do some shopping (Lin’s plan not mine) and then maybe take a cab to Megan’s Bay. But we ended up just relaxing most of the morning and then headed over to the shops at the dock after lunch. I bought someone a Christmas present and Lin bought herself a ring and maybe a few other things. The ring had to be sized and they said it would be done by 4. We stopped at a bar for coke/tea and French fries. Then I headed back to the ship while she watched the iguana’s and waited for her ring. After the ship left port it was time for Bingo so I headed up there. Still didn’t win Bingo but did win the drawing (well sort of I ... read more

We spent a week in gorgeous St. John. This was our first trip to the Caribbean. The water has indescribable beauty and warmth. It is spectacular in so many ways. We were blessed with great opportunity to photograph a friends wedding and stay with all the family for our week stay on the island. We lived a life style that most dream of. Our accommodations were sprawling gigantic villas with sweeping views overlooking blue lagoon bays and on out to the British Virgin Islands. The weather was pretty hot and humid which I think is normal for the time of year (mid July). The best time spent was cooling off and chillin' in the water. The bugs are abundant and like to eat you alive, but you don’t realize it until your home getting ready for ... read more

After a long trip from San Diego to St. Thoms, USVI we were welcomed off the plane with refreshing choice of rum shots. We love the Island life. We stayed in quaint hotel overlooking the town of Charlotte Amalie. We had some time the next day to see a little of St. Thomas before we headed over to meet our friends in St. John for the week. We spent most of our day sitting in AC drinking pina coladas and other rum drinks bewteen walking around the historic part of Charlotte. The weather is very hot and humid. After half a day wandering in the humid heat, we decided it was time to catch the car ferry over to St. John and get our vacation started...... read more

Our plan for this cruising season was to sail up the Caribbean chain, stopping along the way to visit new islands and re-visit some of our favorites from last year. Our goal was to reach the Virgin Islands by April and spend a month there before turning back and heading south again (our insurance for the boat dictates that we must be out of the hurricane belt by the first of July). So once we left St. Martin we sailed west to St. Thomas, which turned out to be is the farthest point of travel for the Rum Runner this year before we turned back and completed our yo-yo thru the Caribbean chain. We spent very little time in the Virgin Islands last year, and were excited to return. Our first stop was Charlotte Amalie, the ... read more

I confess that I have not been making the most of my port time during the last couple weeks. Last week when we were in port I either took the day to just catch up on sleep and treat myself to such luxuries as lying in bed reading, or I just went out to cafes and enjoyed some good food along with fast internet. So this cruise, I’m more determined to actually get out and do something fun. Last night we were in San Juan. I’m still so in love with that city. It was great to be back there. I just wandered through the winding stone streets and enjoyed the warm but fresh night air. Then I curled up in Starbucks and used Skype (a new discovery for me which I am now crazy about!) ... read more
