Okay, so life in paradise is not always what it is cracked up to be (although that might be hard to believe if you follow the travel blog). That’s because I always try to focus on the good parts of our trip when I sit down to the computer and write, reminiscing our recent adventures and going thru the pictures. But the truth of the matter is that this isn’t a vacation out here all the time. It’s a very challenging life. We both have broken many toes and have sustained a multitude of other boat bites and permanent damage- we are always hurting ourselves as this is a very physical lifestyle. And traveling is hard work, tedious, and exhausting when sailing against the trades. The boat breaks all the time, like for example we blew ... read more

The island of St. John is very different than the other USVI in that it is a National Park. Roughly two thirds of the island is protected and therefore pristine. There are no houses, hotels, shops, or restaurants within the park boundary. The anchorages are tucked into natural bays, in the shadow of the lush mountainside with beautiful beaches and deep aquamarine water- absolutely gorgeous. The National Park was expanded in 2001 to include the surrounding reefs and seabeds. In fact the park service provides mooring balls for boaters to use which help alleviate the damage from anchoring. Thus the snorkeling in St. John is great and fish and turtles swim right up to the boat- how awesome. We really loved our time here. The first place we visited in St. John was Lameshur Bay, on ... read more

The United States Virgin Islands is a group of islands in the Caribbean that are an insular area of the United States. The islands are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller but historically distinct Water Island, and many other surrounding minor islands. The total land area of the territory is 346.36 km² (133.73 sq mi). As of the 2000 census the population was 108,612. Three of the main islands have nicknames often used by locals: "Twin City" (St. Croix), "Rock City" (St. Thomas), "Love City" (St. John), and "Small City" (Water Island). The Virgin Islands were originally settled by the Ciboney, Carib, ... read more

The trade winds were going to blow up to 30 knots (or about 40 mph for you landlubbers) and the seas were going to build up to 12-14 feet here in the Caribbean and were predicted to be this way for at least a week. So it was time to leave Ponce and find a safe harbor, one which would provide adequate protection and also entertainment for a week. So we decided to saddle up the Rum Runner and sail on to Culebra in the Spanish Virgin Islands. Yes, the Spanish Virgin Islands, the less known and less visited grouping of the Virgin Islands. Everyone knows about the U.S.V.I. and the B.V.I., but many have not even heard of or know about the S.V.I. (we certainly didn’t, not until we started this trip at least). The ... read more

For many years longer than me, my friend Heather has worked for Carnival as a theatre tech. I've known Heather quite literally my whole life, since I was a baby. We grew up on farms around the corner from one another. We went to the same church, youth group, high school. Our families have farmed together for generations. Now that I'm on the Liberty, we get to meet up. Once a month our ships are in port together, in St. Thomas. Last month, her whole family was cruising with her. I got to meet up with them and we had a nice lunch before I had to rush back to the ship. Such perfect timing that the week we were together was when her family was with her. It was only my second week on the ... read more

Caribbean Honeymoon Finally we had the chance to go to our honeymoon...8 months after the wedding - but February is usually my toughest winter month - it is grey and cold in DC, and it is so nice to get away to the sun and warmth. Since I travel so much for work, we decided we wanted to go to a destination that was relatively easy to reach and did not cross too many timezones. So the Caribbean it was! I have always dreamed about going on an overnight sail trip, so we decided to charter a boat for 4 days and spend the remainder days on St. John and St. Thomas. The warm Caribbean sun met us at the airport. Kurt and Victoria, our hosts for the sailboat charter were waiting for us at the ... read more

Hey you land lubbers, just wanted to tell you I have finally gone ahead and bought my own Catamaran down here in st. thomas and believe it's time to do my own cruising again. My last boat I thing I was in the BVI's and hanging out at a local bar, and some rum later I realized I had left something on in the boat and sure enough it burned to the water line. That was a few years ago so I have been chartering ever since and decided it's time to get another one and see how long this one lasts (heheheheh) This Catamaran is beautiful, has plenty of room, sails well and is big and fast. With these winds down here it should make going from place to place a real breeze..........play on words. ... read more

I am a certified open water diver! Oh, I can’t believe it’s done, I did it. I mostly just feel relieved right now! Relieved to have it complete, done, out of the way. I’m free to enjoy St. Thomas as I please when I return here, and free to dive in any of the ports! I am also very pleased with myself. No panic today. No fear. Jay (my instructor) and I fired through all of my skills. My ears were troublesome today and my mask was irritating me, but my skills were perfect and my nerves were too. After “Open Water 3" (our 2nd dive of the day), as we came out of the water, I said I feel a million times better. Jay could see it. When I snorkeled in Barbados last week, I ... read more
