The Tobago Cays, which incidentally are not in Tobago but in the Grenadines, are one of the most beautiful places on this earth. It is an archipelago of 5 small islands set behind a long Horseshoe Reef. After our quick 20 mile sail from Bequia, we anchored behind the reef between a couple of the islands in the crystal clear, gin colored waters. We had stunning views everywhere we looked, from the waves crashing out on the reef to the white sand beaches lined with coconut palm trees of the individual Cays. And it is so pristine, with no civilization in site and only accessible by boat. In fact, the Tobago Cays has recently been turned into a national park in an effort to preserve the natural beauty and abundant wildlife. And the snorkeling in the ... read more

Everywhere along our trip we have met other cruisers who are celebrating the fact that they "finally made it!" For some, this means that they finally made it off the dock and are traveling down to the Florida Keys. For others it is that they finally made it to the Bahamas and are enjoying the island life. And still for many others it is finally making it to the Caribbean, specifically when you make landfall in the Virgin Islands. All of these are great accomplishments in this cruising life and definitely worth celebrating. But for us, our dream was to sail to the Grenadines. If you had asked us for the one spot in the Caribbean that we wanted to visit, the one place that would signify that we have accomplished our dream of sailing to ... read more

43 days and counting. I've decided that 20 minutes is just too short a time to try to change planes in San Juan, PR. So, I'm going to spend the night in Old San Juan on my way down to Bequia. I visited San Juan once before, but it was only for a couple of hours one night on a cruise stop. After searching everywhere from Old San Juan to the beaches of Condado, I've decided to stay at a place called "Da House". (www.dahouse.com) The hotel describes itself as new bohemian. It's in an historic 1600's building in the heart of Old San Juan. It's only $90 for the night including taxes and all. The only complaint I saw on the reviews was that there was alot of street noise. With that in mind, I ... read more

Good Monday, Its 71 days and counting till I leave for Bequia. Many of you have been asking where Bequia is and how do I get there. Well, from Dallas I fly to San Juan. In San Juan, PR I have only 20 minutes to try and make my LIAT (Leeward Island Air) but with only carry on baggage, I hope to make it. If not, I will spend the night in San Juan and catch the next day's flight. From San Juan I fly to St Vincent. If I can make it to St Vincent in time to catch the ferry to Bequia, then I'll be on my way. If not, I'll spend another night in St Vincent and catch the ferry over the next day. The ferry ride is only 9 miles or a ... read more

We are still at Saline Bay. Planing on moving boat to the North of this island, there is another bay, called Salt Whistle. Probably will be doing this within the hour. There is a low that passed over us this morning with lot's of wind and some rain. We welcome the rain, Boat needs a good washing. We have been here for 2 days, Jeris and I caught a taxi up to town yesterday morning, spectacular view of the Tobago cay's. Cost us 10 EC for both, not bad. Was well worth it or we would have had to climb the "mountain". Jeris right foot, ankle, is a bit swollen, a malady she has had for sometime now. We also went to the beach. There were some vendors. I asked the cost of a tank top. ... read more

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by, And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face and a grey dawn breaking. John Masefield I started sailing around on Ocean Star in September but have never really introduced you to her properly, so I thought I would take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about this beautiful vessel. Ocean Star is a gaff-rigged schooner …”what does that mean?”, I hear you ask Mrs Mott. Well, schooners are a type of sailing boat with at least two masts, where the aft mast (the one at the back) is taller than the ... read more

We arrived in the Tobago cays around 1000 hours. I cannot start to describe this area. Best way Pete could express himself was saying it looked like atolls. It is just beautiful. You have the atlantic ocean with a huge reef in front of us and 3 very small islands. The reef goes for miles....It is a little tricky coming in here. We plan to be here overnight, and maybe tomorrow as well. Weather permitting. We are anchored between Petit Rameu and Petit Bateau. In 22 feet of depth. We had an early lunch, getting ready to put dinghy in water, and go do some snorkeling. You are not allowed to take anything live or dead from here, it is a park. There are boat boys around selling ice, fish, lobster, etc. And 99 per cent ... read more
