As I'm walking into town this morning I meet a taxi coming up the hill. The taxi's here are all little Nissan pickups with railings and a canvas tarp roof over the bed. As it passes by a boy in the back yells out "hey, remember me? From the other day?" It's one of the boys from Paget Farm that was there when the lighning hit. He's about fourteen with a big white smile. "Yah, I remember, Paget Farm-Lightning" He flashes that smile and opens his eyes as wide as possible and make his best lightning/thunder imitation. We share a good laugh as the taxi rolls around the hill. The whole scene lasts only a few seconds, but it makes my day. By the time I reach Port Elizabeth I'm really hot, so I stop at ... read more

Walking to down today I stop at "The Boat Shop" It's a small home art studio. There I meet Lucy. She and her husband create authentic Bequian model sailing boats from coconuts. They're all hand carved by her husband and hand painted by Lucy. I have my eye on one particular boat that has a beautiful moca brown paint that really looks cool with the natural look of the coconut showing through a deep layer of clear enamel. The morning and early afternoon are spent working (that's right, working!) to buy some cars online through the Dallas auto auction. Not unlike going to the auction in person sometimes, its a lot of time spent just to come away with one car. Well, that's how it goes sometimes. It's kind of like fishing-some days they're biting and ... read more

Greetings from Beautiful Bequia! You know how the more you get to know someone, the more you admire their good qualities and the easier it is to overlook their flaws. Well, that's how I'm feeling about Bequia. The day began with more banana pancakes. MMM, so island, mon. It was kind of overcast and looking like rain. I've decided to most often walk instead of catching the bus. (I'm working on a whole other writing on the buses. look for it soon) by walking, I feel more like I'm taking it all in. It only takes about 40 minutes to walk from my house to town, so that must be about 2 and a quarter miles. Just when I get to town it starts to rain. The rains here start out with a gentle sprinkle then ... read more

!!! WARNING!!! Today was not very interesting. Be sure you are seated because reading today's blog may cause drowsiness or sudden sleep. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery while reading this blog and do not read with alcoholic beverages. Warning aside, I know, now, that I am adjusting to island time. I got out of bed an hour and 45 minutes after sunup. The day began with a clean, close shave. I know many of you were expecting me to return home with that "Tom Hanks Castaway" look, but if my beard gets very long at all it just starts to itch too much and besides I didn't want to have a white face when I got home and shaved. Breakfast was home-made banana pancakes topped with passion fruit jam. MMMMMMM, Gooood! Yesterday I ... read more

4:00am I roll over in bed and try to decide if I'm going to get up when the alarm sounds at 5:30. One of the "Must do" things here on Bequia is to take a day sail on the "Friendship Rose" She's a 100 foot sailing schooner built here on the island. On Wednesdays she sails to nearby Mustique and Tomorrow she'll be making the run down to the Tobago Cays. It's an out and back day sail/snorkel trip which includes breakfast, lunch, and tea. Tea is very big here. It's that British heritage, you know. Ultimately, I decide to pace myself and save something for next week or the week after. When the alarm sounds, I roll over and go back to sleep, besides, I've been wanting to check out a place called Spring Bay ... read more

5:30AM Up and at 'em to catch the 6:30 ferry to St V. Once I negociate the "driveway of death" I'm greeted by one of the dollar buses, so I reach Port Elizabeth with plenty of time to spare. I find a chair at the Gingerbread and check some mail. Reading everyone's mail is one of the highlites of my mornings. So...Everyone write long and often. 6:30am. The ferry ride to St V is wonderful. All the way I keep thinking of and seeing things I would like to take pictures of. When we reach Kingstown, everything is a bustle. Saturday morning and everyone is in town for the market. I find a camera from a very nice lady named Verna. Everything here costs about twice as much as back home, which is strange because in ... read more

6:30am I wake up and decide to go for a jog heading south of my house toward Le Pompe and Paget Farm. Its my first time in that direction and the hills are rough. Going down is not a problem, but uphill is a bear! At one point I begin to DOUBT I will make it home. Le Pompe and Paget Farm look to be the poorer side of the island. Very few vacation homes. On the way back home I meet Todd and his son, Logan. They had done some mission work pouring concrete at a church in Paget Farm a few days earlier and a member of the church had offered to take them spear-fishing, but he appearantly forgot. They are from West Virginia and Todd used to be a white water rafting guide. ... read more

My camera falling out of my bag and into the ocean has put a big cloud over the whole day. This just doesn't seem to be my trip when it comes to cameras. I didn't loose the pics on my memory card, but I can't get it to take any new photos. Please join me in praying for a miraculous healing (i'm not kidding). Well, I made it to Bequia. My flight arrived at St V about 5:45. By the time I made it through customs, my bag was waiting for me. I rushed out the door and into a taxi. By then it was about 7 min. till the last ferry left. My driver assured me he could get me there before 6:00. We made it to the ferry dock with about 30 seconds to ... read more
