Gamboa was a place we had highlighted in the early stages of planning and we are so pleased we went ahead with the decision to go there. It wasn't particularly straight forward as the accommodation options were few and far between in addition to being ridiculously overpriced (in our European based opinion - we are starting to learn how expensive the USA must be if people are happy with these prices). Even getting there was a challenge as our travel day was a public holiday with limited transport out of the city. Thankfully Uber only cost $17 to do the 35km trip, although a long-distance surcharge was cheekily added without our knowledge. On complaining it was deducted! We had read that there was no shop or restaurant and that we should take all of our provisions ... read more

It was a strange relief to step off the dark, “comfortable,” air conditioned coach bus from the capital and into the rain and humidity of Las Sabanitas, a commercial hub outside of Colón. The intersection felt more like Latin America than anywhere else during my Panamá trip. The only constant from our vantage point under the steel supermercado awning were women seated at folding tables selling lottery tickets and counting wads of twenties. Packed repurposed U.S. school buses stopped every few minutes and the locals stuffed themselves into the aisles. Ours arrived about a half an hour later and surprisingly had empty seats. PUERTO LINDO Just walking through this village is an experience. A narrow dirt path handlebars off the main camino and cuts between wooden bungalows with the tide at their doorstep and rubbled concrete ... read more

GAMBOA, PANAMA - 1 - 7 OCTOBER 2017 We flew into Panama from Nicaragua and the flight was really quick and easy taking under an hour and half - a really short journey for us. It was a speedy process through customs as well and we soon had our luggage off the rack and wandered outside to meet up with our driver who was waiting for us. The journey to Gamboa was also quick and easy and about an hour after we set off we reached an iron and wood bridge crossing the Chagres River which is the only access road into Gamboa our destination. This old bridge was well past its ‘sell by date’ and falling apart, vehicles waited patiently at the traffic lights to cross since it is only capable of providing space for ... read more

Playa blanca (Porto Belo) Today we had a little day trip to the Caribbean Sea. We have been near Porto Belo at Playa Blanca. Our driver took us by boat to a remote beach with white sand, coconut palm-trees, and very-warm water. But before taking the boat is saw something flying by... and was kind of sure: THAT WAS NOT A BIRD?! so... what flies as well? You got it! A bat :) We spottet a small colony of tent-building bat underneath a palm-tree leaf. It was one of the cutest bat-species there is: Uroderma bilobatum (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tent-making_bat#/media/File:Common_tent-making_bats.JPG) I snorkelled the whole day, seeing cuttlefishs, sting-rays, funny fishes playing with my finger, and so on. It was lovely ❤ As well, you could see many pelicans fishing nearby from their perch. These birds are quite big, but ... read more

Geo: 10.8678, -79.8993We were awake and up in time for breakfast in the dining room today for the first time. I have been anticipating having eggs Benedict, but, no, it was not on the menu. As far as I remember, eggs Benedict has been on the daily menu of every other ship we have sailed. Breakfast was still good although the waiters were rushing, and I felt a bit hurried. We had a slow day today. We watched the old move Charlie Chan in Panama on the TV in our room. That was fun. I can't remember ever watching a Charlie Chan movie; I just remember the character from people imitating and caricaturizing him. Philip and I worked on one of the jigsaw puzzles in the library, a composite picture of neon signs of Las Vegas ... read more

Panama Canal 15th April Transit Panama Canal Another transit of the Panama Canal, this time West to East. Arriving early morning we got a great view of the Bridge of Americas and the new lock system for the larger ships. Getting into the channel we were paired with a huge container ship into the Miraflores Locks, the onto the Pedro Miguel Locks which raise us to the level of the Gatun Lake. After crossing the lake and the Continental divide its into the Gatun Locks to be lowered 26 metres to complete the transit of the Canal. Some facts: Every time the Canal has to fill a lock it takes 52 million gallons in 15 minute. The length of the Canal is 51 miles and is 10 miles wide The most expensive toll was 375,600 US ... read more

Our first official port was Cartagena, Columbia. Out waitlisted tour came through and we drove to the National Avery. On the way our guide Sergio told us about the history of the revolutionary movement. The FARC started out as a protest by villages that were being shortchanged by the cities and the National government. Unfortunately the movement joined with the drug cartels to get money to buy weapons. The conflict went on for sixty years and a peace treaty is currently being negotiated, the first one was rejected by the people. We drove through an industrial area where oil refineries and chemical plants pollute the air and ground. Although the soil was once very fertile, nothing grows there now. The Aviary is a national treasure. We wandered the trails for three hours and saw all kinds ... read more

Panama Canal This was the highlight of the trip and it had certainly been hyped up into ‘The Canal Experience’! We had had a lecture every day, on sea days, by Bill Fall, who was excellent and certainly knew his stuff. I never knew a Canal could be so complicated!! Basically it was started by the French in 1880 – 26,000 of them died due to Malaria and the project was then abandoned. America took it on again in 1903, removing over 200 million cubic metres of material and it was completed in 1914, so is now 102 years old. Amazing feat of engineering all those years ago when you think that they didn’t have any vehicles or machinery. It is 48 miles, or 80 kms long and strangely the Atlantic Ocean is 9” lower than ... read more

My second time in Panama. Contrary to many of my previous trips, I didn't change place to sleep every 2 days, but did only 2 places in 2 weeks. I spent 8 days in Hotel Summit Radisson near Gamboa, and Bocas del Toro, 6 days. Highlights: 1-Soberania national park: easily accessible; I walked 8 days in the trails and forest is full of animals I saw 2 new species of monkeys: Geoffroy's tamarin and Panama night monkey. Finally, I saw all species of Central America! Yahoo! 2- Bocas Del Toro: Bastimentos island: national park on it, really nice beach. 3- Zapatillo Caye: colour of the sea is splendid! Lows: 1- Bocas del Toro: Bocas town. The city sees an army of tourists, but it isn't the nicest city. Be careful of porters at the airport!! They ... read more
