Bonjour!

So after eventually getting to Surfing Turtle Lodge, Alex and Raoul actually being pretty intoxicated already...I think they take the moto of drink through the hangover a little too literally, we dumped our bags down as told to do so by Pedro, a fellow spanish look a like of Jack Black and kicked back and relaxed! This hostel was sweet as! We were told that we would literally be the only people there that night as a huge group were leaving so we would have the place to ourselves! the location was gorgeous, just a huge expanse of deserted beach with huge surfing waves rolling up from the sea with beach volleyball, beach huts, a bar, a restaurant....what more could we want! The guys as usual were staving and being us we thought that it would ... read more

After haggling our taxi driver down to $22 each he decided when we got to theLazy Turtle hostelin Leon that he wouldput theprice up again and just grinned at us and said tips tips! We thoughtyou little bugger but just let him take the fewdollars extra as we couldn't be bothered to argue! So we checked into the hostel however, probably should have found an internet cafe first as we weren't too sure wher the boys were.We checked the internet after we had checked in to find that they were at the other hostel lazy bones.....cheekily we worked our charm on the hostel owner and managedto check out straight away as we wantedto spend the time with the guys! SO we found lazy bones and got our room here for the night! We first saw alex ... read more

Arrived in Leon yesterday, from the capital Managua. Spent the night in a little hotel, well room at least not much of a hotel, just outside the bus station in Managua. Took a taxi to the mini bus station, and waited for a little while until the bus was full and we were ready to go. Not much to tell, about the trip up, other than it was hot in the micro bus, it cost 40C. Arrived at the bus terminal, smaller than the one in Xela (bus wise), yet the market was quite impressive. Found out what way the centre of town was, and started walking. Took about 15 minutes, and had to stop a few times, as I have far too many things with me. A sort out is on the cards for later ... read more

Today is our last full day in Nicaragua. Early in the morning I was able to attend a public health overview seminar on my computer by a group I am affiliated with. I was able to do this with the hotel computer since my little laptop didn´t support the software necessary to receive the information. There were some technical difficulties but I was able to see and hear most of the presentations. After that Rich and I had our pancake breakfast (batter, oil and mixed up pancake mix is provided by the hotel), you just have to cook them up yourself. Yesterday I showed a group of ladies at the hotel a technique I learned from a woman I lived with in Costa Rica where you add oatmeal and raw shredded carrots to the pancake to ... read more

Hi! We are alive and well and enjoying all the sites of colonial Leon. Everyday we strike out for the churches, galleries, shops and markets all over Leon. Yesterday, while walking in the central park I ran into this girl I met from Israel named Noah who was staying at Finca Zopilote in Ometepe several weeks ago. I had also run into her again one day when I was in Granada only for a short time. So for the third time I run into her and Rich took our picture together. She is traveling around making and selling jewelry. Since I last saw her she had been to Costa Rica and El Salvador. We happened to meet her at 12 noon and there are sirens that go off in Leon at exactly 7 am, 12 noon ... read more

Hi! Rich and I are back in Leon where I recovered from my cold two weeks ago. I like that I know the basic layout of the city and can show him around. We went to the french bakery, the air conditioned internet and to the grocery store that has really nice stuff. Now we are staying at a hostel where our friends from Jiquilillo Beach are (the kids from Boston) because the only girl in the group forgot her Iphone and we said we would meet her at the hotel and deliver it. The hotel is really cute and has a nice kitchen which guests can use so we decided to stay. They also provide pancake breakfast for free and I am writing my blog while I wait for these pancakes to be made. Yesterday ... read more

Hi everyone, Today was my last full day in Leon and I am nearly over my cold. I still have a little sore throat on the right side only, but am otherwise feeling good. And that is a great thing because Rich arrives tomorrow night! I will pack up my things and hang out here at the hotel until the last minute then take the bus to Managua and then a cab to the airport. The father of the family I stayed with in December will be picking us up there and taking us to La Mariposa, a language school and Ecolodge. I am looking forward to seeing Gonzolo and hopefully his family again. We had a joke going that he was my Papa in Nicaragua, but his birthday is May 15, 1965 which is only ... read more

Hi again! Leon is a city of old churches. I walk past and take a few pictures but touring these really isn´t my thing. And it seems most people are shopping and not in the churches anyway. Of course it is a Spanish Colonial City and Catholic Churches seem to be the only kind. For history or archeological buffs it would be quite interesting. Few churches are in good repair, but there are a few which are quite beautiful. I do enjoy the parks near the churches where the old men play chess and dominos and there is ice cream and snacks to buy. Within 12 blocks in any direction there are as many churches as well as museums. Of course there are bars and hostels and these are the happening places with loud music, pool ... read more

Hi Everyone, I am up and around today even though the weather here is still a little rainy and the polluted air makes me cough. I wanted to update with some photos since I can´t do this from the hotel computer. Everyone here is paying attention to the flooding that is happening in Chinandega which is north of here. People are being evacuated via helicopter and we are watching this on the news in the hotel. Also, in Guatamala the Vulcan Picaya (?) erupted and people have been killed while others are being evacuated. Many people are suffering from the ash in the air. The news from home only seems to discuss the mismanagement of the oil spill in the Gulf. No other news has been given about what else is happening. So, I feel pretty ... read more
