Last night at the island the night guard didn't show up until late (around 8:30) The sun goes down early so it's dark around 6:30 and you need electricity ie: power, lights They have solar panels and have power all the time from the panels, however it has been broken and the part coming from Miami has not yet arrived. So the night guard starts up the diesel generator when he shows up and we have power for a few hours. Anyhow dinner was no problem. I had ordered earlier and only ordered cabbage salad. I can only take so much grease, which all of what the food is, good but prepared in grease. The cook doesn't get in until after I get up in the morning so I usually just go in the kitchen house ... read more

Well I wanted beach, hot, sun and all alone. Ask and you shall receive. I can't describe how beautiful this country is so far. Landed in Managua the capital city. Nicaragua is the safest country in central America. However they say the roads are dangerous. Yes I can see why, not because of speed and congestion like I thought. It was slow driving, dogs, bikes, cows, horse drawn wagons with loads of all sorts of thing, trucks with people piled up on top, and even horses roaming randomly about. I can't believe all the horses roaming everywhere like they belong to no one. So strange. Eden's mouth would drop open. Saw Mombotombo from the air as we came in as well as on the way to Poneloya, however you can't really not see it. It's huge ... read more

January 26th Erin My days so far at Surfing Turtle can be summed up in just one word: relaxed. It definitely has taken some getting used to. Quite different from my life back in KC, and very different from Leon where we spent our first two days. The Spanish speaking only staff has requested someone is up in the mornings by 6:30 a.m. because that is when the night security guard leaves. Thanks to a neighboring local rooster, I don’t even have to use the travel alarm clock we packed! Being the morning person that I am, I have really enjoyed the tranquility and cool temperatures, as well as the hot cup of instant coffee during these mornings! Jeff has also taken to getting up with me since he has been working away on a shed ... read more

1/20/2012 & 1/21/2012 Jeff After narrowly making our connecting flight from Houston to Managua (we had to be taken by airport transportation to our gate and were the last to board the plane) we were finally bound for Nicaragua. We landed and got through immigration without a hitch; we hopped in a cab to take us to the bus station. The look on Erin's face was priceless as we drove through the capital city for about 20 minutes. It was obvious we were not in Kansas anymore. We both smiled and held it together for the cab ride until we arrived at our "bus station" which was nothing more than a back alley garage with a lemonade stand sized ticket counter. We were the only two nonlocal passengers crammed inside a microbus with 15 or 16 ... read more

So Nicaragua, this is one country I had heard loads about from other backpackers travelling the other way. It seemed to be one of these countries that people either love or hate.....for myself I loved it. The country itself is beautiful with a different volcano around every corner and despite poverty levels that I haven’t seen anywhere else in the world the people were so friendly. So the first stop in Nicaragua was Leon, it’s a colonial town in the North of the country and as cities go it was pretty but there wasn’t really that much to see. After a day wandering around the city with the highlight being a really bizarre fairytale museum that was solely made up of manikins dressed up as the fairytale creatures, they kind of all looked the same. It’s ... read more

Hey Friends, A lot has happened since my last blog post. I arrived in Nicaragua for the tail end of the rainy season and during a 2 week stretch in October we got hit by a few hurricanes, which made life a bit more difficult as expected. Also during that time I was doing training hikes without clients so that I could learn all the routes of the different places we go. What this means is that I was doing 2 day hikes in one days time all the meanwhile being rained on the entire time. Let's just say I got a real good idea if what trench foot means. The trails we normally walk up and down were more like small rivers or creeks and it was nearly impossible to determine location at times because ... read more

Hola Amigos, First off I would like to apologize for my lack of communication on this blog for the past couple years, but I am now back at it. I am now a college graduate doing the cliché backpacking experience through Central and South America. Currently I am living in Leon, Nicaragua where I am volunteering/ working for at least the next 3 months with a non-profit organization called Quetzaltrekkers and will be a Volcano tour guide for them. The net profits go towards local street kids programs and the hikes run for anywhere from US$30-90. We do 9 different hikes as well as an overnight hike during a full moon to the Telica Volcano. That hike particularly also offers views of lava when we stand at the top of the crater and look down. As ... read more

Hola Amigos! It has been quite some time since the last blog, mainly because of a short of internet access. We left Utila for D&D Brewery on lake Yojoa in Honduras. The travel day was about 7 hours long but a nice cold draft Porter awaited us at D&D. The brewery recently traded hands and the new owner, Bobby, was a joy to spend some time with. He had a wealth of information for us about Honduras and Central America in general. At the brewery we decided our next adventure would be El Salvador, aiming for El Zonte, the beach that Amy had previously fallen in love with in El Sal. An eight hour bus ride and we made it to San Salvador, the capital of El Sal. We were hoping to catch the bus from ... read more

Well, we made it home safely. It took a little longer than we anticipated because of thunderstorms in Miami but we pulled into St. John's at about 4am this morning. All our luggage made it to Montreal with us so we didn't have to try to track down missing luggage. That was a big relief. Some of you have asked where the school is located. Here is a Google Maps link to the school: url=http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=El+Sauce,+Leon,+Nicaragua&hl=en&ll=12.847656,-86.659934&spn=0.002301,0.003484&sll=49.891235,-97.15369&sspn=50.213105,114.169922&t=h&z=19La Cenicera School The road goes along the top of the page and the school is approximately in the middle. It has a tin roof. Beside the school is a very large tree and we spent a lot of time there recovering from the heat. Back on Friday, we had our reflection time with Lenin. He gave a brief synopsis of what ... read more

We are back once again in Managua. It is still very warm but much less humid than in El Sauce. But of course, that is all relative. It is still way more humid than in Ottawa. We left our wonderful hotel in Leon and headed to Managua at about 9am. Along the way, our bus driver pointed out a small town, La Paz Centro. that made all the clay tiles that are used for building. Apparently, they are all made by hand including the half cylinder shapes that are used as roofing tiles. There were huge piles of wood to burn in the furnaces where they fired the tiles. In the distance we could see a volcano that had smoke and ash coming out the top. This is the Telica volcano. We thought it was quite ... read more
