Arriving in Leon on March 26thlittle did I know that this city would become my home for over a month and one of the real highlights of the trip. I’m sure when I look back, Leon will stick out in my mind as one of the most significant places I visited. The city, along with Granada, is an old-style colonial place and although not quite as “polished” as Granada, I liked it more. Perhaps this is exactly why I liked it more – more authentic, less touristy and not even a hint of an Irish pub in sight. It was hot, really really painfully hot and it’s true that walking down the pavements was at times a near leg-breaking experience given the quantity of pot holes and uncovered drains. But it was here in Leon that ... read more

Perquín was my last stop in El Salvador, so I was ready for another long day of travelling. I was a little sad to be leaving the country, as I really loved it, even though in the same way that I didn't like Honduras, I couldn't really find any reason why my feelings were so strong. My 1st bus was leaving Perquín at 6.30am. With my hotel being a few hundred metres down from the village, by the time the bus got to me, it was already jam packed and I ended up having to stand by the door with my bottom sticking out... The bus was going to San Miguel, but for $1.25, I was getting off at the main junction and catching one ($1.75) going the other way, toward the Honduras border. Leaving El ... read more

We´re not working hard - an entirely civilized morning which was key for me - still working on a little bit of a sleep deficit from the last night shift. But then we braved the chicken bus out to the beach. As mom said, "well worth the 50 cents" - that´s what it cost us to get out there. and no chickens to boot. but maybe a little crowded. okay, maybe a lot. but dave will appreciate that it was less than hour of standing hip to butt with your neighbor, rather than a several hour bus ride. once we rounded the windy bend and braved the burnt feet on the hot sand, the reward was a great stretch of pacific beach to walk as far as we could stand. a stop off at a nice ... read more

another long day - started in Atlanta, spent the flight to nica trying to figure out a gameplan on disembarkation. travel karma intact - found a great hole-in-the-wall thai restaurant across the street from our best western in atlanta (thank you dad, i'll explain later), then a seamless flight to nica, picked up without a hitch from the airport, nice drive to leon and immediately found a very decent room in a nice hostel. once in leon, we dropped bags, got our bearings and headed off across town turned 90 degrees around because we haven´t figured out how to look at our map right side up (we are looking at it sideways). dumb luck ended us up at the very museum I had so wanted to see in leon and it was well worth the 50 ... read more

Another lovely, sunny day. Just can't complain. We walked into "town," which is one street with two lanes right next to the beach, and ordered breakfast at a little comedor set in the sand. The food took a long time to arrive & in that time we witnessed all kinds of interesting things. We watched two local guys walk down the road, drinking beer (at 8:30am), in their underwear (one with tightie whities, one with boxers). The best part was probably when boxer dude had his free hand (the other hand was holding the beer) in his shorts (through the fly no less) for a good solid few minutes while talking with someone in our comedor. Good morning! Ick. Not long after that a little kid & his dad were walking to their fishing boat, right ... read more

This morning we made our second Central American George Bowls. They were fantastico! Perfect way to start the morning. I walked around this morning early & tried to find some coffee. Love my morning walks! I found some right next door but only after I'd already walked everywhere & was on my way back to the the hostel. We packed up our life & stuck it all in a locker so we could go to the Fundacion Ortiz Museo (museum). It is a really beautiful museum in downtown Leon that takes up the corners of 2 large city blocks. The museum has current artists as well as ancient art from all over Central America. It was a nice change of pace from our usual touristy attractions. There were six cute little gardens throughout & beautiful chandeliers. ... read more

Today we completed our fourth day on site. The school is just about finished. We´ve spent the last few days mixing concrete, pouring the floor, painting, digging latrines and cutting and bending rebar which will b used for the next school build in a neighbouring community. It´s hard, hot work, but everyone is pitching in including the children of Bella Vista. Yesterday we visited the students in their existing school, which is a ranchero style shelter made of wood and palm branches. Of course we totally disrupted the teacher´s lesson plan, but everyone was happy to see us. Today we brought some school supplies and gifts to the school. The highlight was the balsam airplanes, the kids loved them. All of us are doing well. There have been a few upset stomachs, scrapes, bruises and headaches, ... read more

I woke up early & spent the morning attempting to catch up on journals. It is too easy to fall behind & I am currently working on 5 days ago. It also makes it hard to remember all the details. I guess it's just too bad I'm having too much fun to find time to journal.... By the time Geoff got up I had already finished breakfast, had two cups of coffee, & journaled for a couple of hours. The wifi here stinks otherwise I would have played online probably. Today we are going volcano boarding. Several people we've met along the way have raved about it & that is part of why we are at this hostel. For $30 per person we get our room, a t-shirt, 2 mojitos each, & a trek to the ... read more

Today we mixed concrete and started on the floor of the school. It was hard work! But as Tom keeps reminding us, the main reason we´re here isn´t to provide manual labour on a construction site but rather to love the kids in the community. After all, as construction workers building a school, we could be replaced here for a dollar a day. But the relationships we´re building are, as the Mastercard ad says, priceless. So we take regular breaks from work to play with the kids, and they reciprocate by pitching in with the construction work. And so the whole construction site has something of a party atmosphere. The work is important because it shows the community that we care and that we believe in what they are doing. And that´s why they´re excited to ... read more

I really wish I had the ability to sleep past 630am. Oh well! I got up and walked around town. I like seeing the towns first thing in the morning. It's always more peaceful. Plus I like to just watch the town wake up while I walk in search of coffee. This morning I had someone ask me for directions so that was kinda funny. But, since it's Sunday, nothing is open & doesn't look like it's going to open any time soon. Shoot. Went back to our hotel & we got packed up for our bus ride to Leon. We bought a couple little pastries from the grocery store across the street & walked to the bus terminal. It's already hot & it is only 830 in the morning. Whew. We walked into the bus ... read more
