We left Caye Cauker early in the morning and arrived in Belize City, a short walk to the bus terminal, to catch a chicken bus to San Ignatius on the Guatemalan border. Only a couple of nights stay, but it would break our journey as we made our way to to the Guatemala. And lucky us, we arrived just in time for the annual town reggae evening. I don't think we slept till the wee hours. San Ignatius a small rural town in lush sub tropical rain forests was quite touristy but we found it quite pleasant and the Belize people very friendly. We wandered the streets discovering the market and local walks and ruins. Along with a top breakfast at a spot called Pops. The next day we hopped on a bus to the border ... read more

Tourism from outside Honduras to Lake Yojoa almost exclusively revolves around D&D Brewery (Hostel, Hotel and Tour company). It's super lovely with beers brewed on site, a fire pit to sit around in the evening and probably the friendliest tour guide in the world. When we arrived from Copan, via the biggest bus station I've ever seen in San Pedro Sula, the bus knew exactly where to drop us off - very handy! We spent the afternoon playing cornhole (a bean bag toss game) and trying a couple of the brews. The hostel is surrounded by trees and there are lots of hummingbird feeders - I was very entertained watching them fly around, but don't think I will ever manage to photo one! The next morning we went down the canal by rowing boat, looking at ... read more

I'd be lying if I said any travel agencies recommended our 'Get to Copan' in one day plan/request. All of them recommended an overnight in Antigua. But we've been there, and didn't want to waste a night. So off we trotted on the route sold as tourist van to Guatemala City, then double decker local bus to the border - in Honduras by half 6. Apart from not. We had to change van at Antigua, no biggie, and arrived in GC at about the right time, and got on our big bus (not a double decker) at 14.45, figuring we were good. Wrongggg... It started to go a little wrong when our bus was literally at a standstill for 2.5 hours not long after GC. Lots of emergency vehicles went passed but no emergency was apparent ... read more

Waw, what a day! We certainly made the most of our one day in Copan with a morning exploring the ruins and an afternoon in the hot springs followed by a traditional BBQ in the rain forest this evening with our travelling family. When we arrived two macaws flew over us and there were some nesting in the trees. The ruins were soooo interesting and our guide, Marvin the Marsian, was full of knowledge and funny jokes. We had three and a half hours exploring and learning about the Maya culture and what all of the structures were. Then we took a tuk tuk back to the hotel as it was sweltering and had some lunch. Our ride to the hot springs was bumpy to say the least but so worth it. Sipping beers in naturally ... read more

After 11 hours, checking out of one country and into another we have arrived in Copan,Honduras. We stopped by the airport on the way to pick up two of the girls' bags which had been left in Miami airport (it could very possibly have been us because it was the exact same flight route). Then an hour at the border cross, converting to new currency and getting another stamp in our passports. Even in the dark we can already see how different it is to Antigua. Our guide, Pippa, is awesome and so full of knowledge about Central America (she does live here despite being from York). Scott is considering taking up this job and is completely fine with being away from home for 50 weeks of the year. It is uncertain whether or not the ... read more

I miss crawling into bed together and holding each other until sunset. I miss knowing what each other thinks and hopes before even discussing the issue. I miss the peace his reassuring hand gives me. I miss him. I miss closeness, I miss love... but I hate love. I'm confused and lost and searching.... I'm hoping and praying and discovering. I'm lost I'm raw I'm here I insist I'm confused I don't work alone I'm lonely I am me. Ayúdame por favor ... read more

We made it through yet another border crossing ourselves, narrowly escaping getting stuck behind a coach full of people entering Honduras. Like any other border crossing day, we had to rise and shine bright and early for a 0540hrs bus to to Aguilares. From there we got another bus to the border crossing at El Poy. At the border, there is no public bus so we had to get another micro bus to Ocatepeque. In Ocatepeque we got a bus to Santa Rosa de Copan where we transferred to one headed to San Pedro Sula but disembarked in La Entrada where we caught our last micro bus to Copan Ruinas. It was rather glorious as the bus from the border climbed into the mountains an we cooled off (Ashley even got goosebumps!!!). Our only hiccup was ... read more

Distance driven today: 185 miles / 298 km Cumulative distance driven: 6,661 miles / 10,720 km Today’s trip: Guatemala City, Guatemala to La Entrada, Honduras Border crossings: 1 Driving in pitch dark: 1,5 hour Major clutch issues: yes, but a paperclip saved the day! First thing in the morning, we went to the Guatemala importer of satellite tracking messenger devices and bought a new one ;-) We borrowed their PC, logged into my online account with the manufacturer, registered the device, and voila, it showed up on my account. We can now, by the push of a button, send a signal to a satellite with our exact coordinates, and publish a digital pin that is juxtaposed on a Google map. We feel safe again, since our family can track us with a very high degree of ... read more

To get to Copán we had to fly to San Pedro Sula, currently classed as the most dangerous city in the world due to the drug and gang warfare. Unfortunately San Pedro Sula is a transport hub and you have to go there to be able to travel to many other places throughout the country, including catching buses to Copán. The bus station, however, is over the other side of town to the airport and so we caught the first taxi we could and got out of town on a bus within an hour of landing. At one point we were stopped by police, who asked to check everyone's documentation. They weren't really interested in seeing documents for most people - they ignored all the people in the front section of the bus (all locals) and ... read more

Left Atitlan on the 24th of February. Hired a private car to take us directly to Copan rather than taking one ride to Antigua, another to Guatemala City and a third vehicle to Copan. Cost for the ride was $200 US in total. Six hour trip along some good roads and some bad. Our driver, Hector, schooled us on our Spanish while we cruised through the Copan river valley. High mountain ridges clad in jungle on our left and right. Fertile farmland on the flats. This area was once controlled by the United Fruit Company now known as Chiquita. The agricultural wealth here is what financed the construction of Copan between 100 AD and 800 AD. The area was originally settled about 1,400 BC but building of the city did not start until much later. The ... read more
