So I left Colombia for Guatemala, my flight was not a direct one; it was scheduled to stop over in Miami. However, when I arrived in Miami, I found out my flight to Guatemala was cancelled. I was in line for 2 hours, finally when I got to the counter; I was put on another flight for the next day and told that because my original flight was cancelled due to bad weather, which was not their fault, so I would be responsible for my hotel and expenses in Miami. How nice American Airlines, this will mark my first and last time with you guys. This meant I arrived a day later than planned, the only good thing was that I met a person from Turks and Caicos, which mean that whenever I visit Turks, I ... read more

Tino Sunday, July 24, 2011 So I’m stuck in the brewery and hotel with a broken down motorcycle. Again, not the worst place to be stuck, but I will want to leave. The brewery really is in the middle of nowhere. But the little dirt road that leads to the brewery passes a little shack of a house. Outside the house always sits a man smoking cigarettes. On the other side of the road from his house he has a small junkyard of motorcycles which sit in front of a backdrop of green mountains adorned with clouds. In one glace I can see that he doesn’t have the parts I need for my motorcycle, but if he is a mechanic and is quite cleaver, maybe he can fabricate what I need. At 7:30 am Sunday morning, ... read more

I didn't know exactly where the brewery was. My Lonely Planet book said that it was on the west side of Lake Yojoa near Peña Blanca. A lot of good that discription was, Peña Blanca wasn't even on my map. I pulled off the highway at what looked like the small road that went around the lake and proceeded to look for a sign that said D & D Brewery and Hotel. What a stupid name for a place in Honduras, I thought. How will I even ask directions to this place? Eventually, as the road seemed to be going away from the lake, I pulled off at a gas station to ask directions. I envisioned myself sitting on a deck overlooking the lake drinking micro-brews while seeing the mountains of the cloud forest in the ... read more

Our flight landed without a hitch and we were happy to get to the hostel since we were exhausted having landed at four in the morning Ohio time. Once we were up and moving, we decided to head up a steep hill to a Coca Cola sign that was similar in fashion to the Hollywood sign in LA. The day was extremely hot and steamy and we stopped several times just to hydrate. We never actually made it to the sign after hiking over an hour. On our way back down the "mountain" there was a strange sound coming from up in the trees and we noticed bird nests literally hanging at least a foot from different branches.... read more

What a fun few days we've had! After the rafting, we've also done horeseback riding and mountain biking! HORSEBACK Yesterday we signed up for the horseback ride. I was sure to take an allergy pill before we got on the horses, as I seem to be VERY allergic to them and will swell up without a pill. Silvia (the German owner) was one of the guides, as well as Allan (Ireland) and Lindsay (Canada) plus a Honduran man that I didn't get the name of who was breaking in one of their new baby horses on his first trail, ride. Walt got a pretty golden horse called "Nugget" and I got a brown one with white feet called "Pata Blana" (foot white). It was a few hours up the road from the hotel through several small ... read more

Marco, Hazel, and I left Trujillo in a clound of dust which is to say that we were following a bus on the rough gravel road that was constructed to bypass the bridge that was washed out. This way was better than the ferry from hell but not by much. We drove into the cloud for twenty kilometers before we knew for sure that we were following a bus. It could have been, a truck, a bus, the tasmanian devil, or a portal into the twilight zone for all we knew because we couldnt see more than 20 feet into the storm. We eventually broke into the clear and reached pavement at a crossroads where we parted company. They would proceed from here to Tacoa where they would begin the first leg of their journey into ... read more

So today we started the day with a rafting trip! We got some breakfast and got ready to go. There were the 4 Kiwis, plus us, and a nice American girl named Michelle. Because the river is low right now during dry season, the trip was a little different than usual. Not only did we get to raft but there were some rock jumps and swimming too. Our guides were Ryan (American), Sam (Australian?) and Jairo (Honduran) who were all phenominal. The river was SO refreshing. It was not at all cold, and in this hot heat it was kinda nice to have the wet portions too. We started with a small rock jump (about 2 meters) and some swimming. It was then off to literally rock climb the side of a HUGE steep rock (with ... read more

So Walt and I started off on our journey Sunday morning. We decided not to trust the unreliable car that JUST got back from the mechanic, and instead decided to bus it. Mike and Mavis were also taking that bus from Tegucigalpa to La Ceiba as they were catching the ferry to Roatan, so it was nice. We head over to the Hedman Alas office Saturday afternoon and purchased the tickets for Sunday. Hedman Alas is a first class bus line that has great comfy and reclining seats as well as a bathroom on board, AC and TVs showing movies. Plues you get a little snack too. It cost us about $25 per person for the 7 hour bus ride. Totally worth it to travel in comfort. The bus went to San Pedro Sula and then ... read more

Marco picked out a place to stay that was just outside of La Ceiba on a bumpy dirt road along the Rio Cangrejal. It was a good base for a kayaking trip that Marco was keen to try. It was also a fun place to stay. The food was good and the drunken expats at the bar were both entertaining and informative. I got to camp on one of their wooden platforms for only $5 since I had my own tent. Marco and Hazel inquired about booking a tour into the Moskita but there was none to be had for less than a boatload of money. Their plan B was to press on to Trujillo and inquire there. Hazel and I would leave in the morning and Marco would bus it the following day after kayaking. ... read more
