Jan 3 ... Let's see week in review. Bea and I went Roaton Friday afternoon after class. It's was about an hour and half boat ride and quite rough, lots of kids were throwing up. When we got there the first hostel we went to was full and the second one had only 2 beds left so we snatched them up. We went out for an amazing BBQ seafood dinner. Saturday we had a massive breaky and just relaxed drinking coffee then we went on a walk from west end to west bay. It was a nice walk on the beach. We stopped to have lunch along the way. When we got back I went snorkeling a bit in half moon bay. At night we again had a delicious dinner at a place that was owned ... read more

Yesterday morning we left San Pedro Sula via a local direct bus to La Ceiba. No bullies on this bus, just a four hour trek through beautiful Honduran terrain. La Ceiba, Honduras' third largest city, sits on the Northern coast of Honduras, a great launch place for our final destination, to Roatan. In La Ceiba, the sea view from the city was nice but the beaches are very polluted and strewn with litter. Nicer beaches are around La Ceiba. Our hotel was in the Zona Viva, which is basically the night club zone. Even though we don't go to nightclubs, we chose this location because of it's central proximity to the city and beachfront hotel. Our room had good cable and for the first time in our adventure, we had ABC, CBS and NBC... We decided ... read more

Our evening in Managua was serene. After divulging in a nice typical style dinner on a patio overlooking the barrio, we ventured across the street to our hotel, locked the gate and felt safe behind our barbed wire for a decent half night sleep At about 9pm the barrio came to life. We could hear music, people hollering, dogs barking, clanking and roaring sounds. We could only imagine what was going on outside our gates but felt very secure in our room. Why all the worry about crime? Yes, if you are walking outside anywhere at the wrong time, bad things can happen. Yes, if we were walking around this neighborhood at that time sporting expensive items, bags - we may be robbed. All in all, we felt safe but intensely aware of our surroundings. Fortunately, ... read more

Dec 25- Jan 3 Well it's been almost ten days since my last entry. Lest see. Xmas was weird. We finally had some meat and decent food. Then Alexandra left with the kids so the girls and I hung out on the porch till midnight when there was a massive flux of fireworks set off. It was crazy lasted ages too. The day after Xmas I walked around with Andrea and Kayle to the mall and then to the Dole park just trying to kill time, very slow weekends here. Let's see classes are decent Spanish is very hard though it's gonna take me much longer than I thought to learn it. I'm pretty slow. And hate studying Haha. My teacher was sick one day so I have a extra day at the end of my ... read more

After a long bus ride from we were in La Ceiba, Honduras. We got up early to be at the bus station by 0500; I think even if I were able to sleep soundly that previous night, or on the bus, I would still be exhausted. It wasn't because it was a stuffy, crowded, smelly, loud, chicken carrying bus; on the contrary, the bus had comfortable seats, a toilet and it was air conditioned. It's a combination of sleep deprivation and sensory overload that really sucks the juice out of you.. Think on it - one can't help but notice all the differences between one's familiar culture and the new culture you are willingly being thrust into. Included in this 'unlikeness' are weather, language, people and their culture, the different concepts of time, different smells, signage, ... read more

Learning Spanish in Honduras Dec13-25 Alright lets see. I will try and catch up the past almost 2 weeks briefly. I left the states this time as most, full of emotions. "why am I leaving, cannt I have normal life and live for the weekends like most people, being sad saying by to mom and dad." I am normally reassure myself with in the first day or so, generally by surfing, meeting people, doing some fun activity and say "yes this is why I do what I do and love my life". However this time around it was a bit rougher. My first day of Spanish classes it rained most of the day, as we walked around to have a city tour. I was pretty disappointed by the beach and the city. I started freaking out, ... read more

Arriving in the dark after a much longer than expected drive from Cusuco National Park back to San Pedro Sula and then on to Tela, we have no sense of what the place will look like in daylight. But we are getting a little feel of the Caribbean flavour. There are elaborate Christmas lights near what seems to be the beachfront and we pass an enormous fenced compound which we learn is the Telamar resort - a massive all inclusive resort where the planeloads from North America, Canada and beyond descend upon. Any locals we spot are distinctly darker than their city cousins, being descendents of the Caribes, who escaped the slave ships in the late 1700's. Juan Carlos is a little unsure of where our hotel, the Maya Vista is located, so after a couple ... read more

We knew it coming in - it's no secret that San Pedro Sula is a big Honduran city with not a lot going for it. As we are driven along the main road from the bus terminal, the Coca Cola and Pepsi billboards both lay claim to Santa Claus and attempt to dominate the crowded skyline. San Pedro Sulan's main hobby must be shopping as large malls are a feature every few kilometres and American fast food chains and Power Chicken outlets drown out any independant and local food offerings. Not surprisingly a lot of the people are very overweight. To us, it is like the worst of America jammed into one location. Thankfully we are not staying to here to see San Pedro Sula. It is a logical base for a couple of 1 and ... read more

It´s 00.45 and we have been awake since 10.00 yesterday, but the day isnt over yet because now we have to get a bus to Belize City. Checking our travel book makes it clear NOTHING TO DO IN BELIZE, we get on the bus, sleep a few hours an wake up at the Mexican Belize Border. After not being checked because the immigration officers were too lazy and having our passports stamped, its time to head on to belize city. As we arrive somewhere around 6 in the morning it becomes clear: we dont want to be here, the city is a collection of little houses, most of wich look like they are inhabited by squatters, this'plus advice by fellow travellers that we could better just move on from there inspires tge decision to get a ... read more

Honduras's Independence Day is September 15, and Teachers' Day is September 17, so we get to enjoy 3 days off from work for a lovely 5 day weekend! Jessica, Paule, and I were originally going to head to Utila (Bay Islands) but Paule had a death in the family and flew home to Canada, so Jess and I decided to join some others on their travel plans to Sambo Creek. I have never been and was excited about seeing something new. Jill and Dan (new administrators) drove their own car, while Jessica, Mollie, Elisa, Colin, Baby Dunnivan (Colin and Elisa's 6 month old), and I shared a rented van. It was about a 10 hour journey to get there (starting at 5am!) but we arrived at Villa Helen's in Sambo Creek, just outside of La Ceiba ... read more
