So my 38th birthday was last Sunday and I decided to spend it basking in the sun at Lago Atilian. My friend Liz came with me and Christi and her host brother met us down there. I did nt take many pictures of the lake as I took a ton last time I was down there. What I did take pictures of were lots of flowers. On Sat. Liz and I took a boat from San Pedro to Panajachel and spent the day walking around a nature preserve where we saw monkies and coati ( cute racoon like creatures with long snouts) and lots of flowers, a few waterfalls and crossed 3 or 4 swinging bridges. Before we even made it to the park we passed a hotel that had tons of flowers. I went a ... read more

The last four days have flown by with all sorts of events. We arrived at Posada Santiago after a shuttle ride from Chichicastenango along the Pan American Highway (which I have always wanted to see) and then negotiating a boat across the Lake from the hub of Panajachel to the pier at the posada - quite an evolution with our cases! It was New Years Eve and preparations were feverishly underway. It was the owner's birthday and he had invited all the guests to celebrate with him and lots of local friends. Another gathering of people from all over the world with stories to tell - great! The dinner was 7 courses , each with a different wine. Live music and sporadic dancing, wonderfully relaxed and fun. A boat was booked to take us all out ... read more

Hola!

Friday 10th of September We are staying with a Guatemalan family today and we've got a 3 hour bus ride to Panachachel where they live. Its on our way to San cristobal so it should break the journey up more than anything. we went to the supermarket and bought rice, beans, pasta, salt, pepper and flour as a wee thank you for putting us up. I bought some sweets for kids if they have any as we don't really know what we're getting ourselves into to be honest. We left Antigua at 12.30 and drove over the roads that were closed earlier on in the week and the devastation was plain to see. Landslides had cut off most parts of the duel carriageway and there were rocks the size of cars blocking other parts so we ... read more

From Las Ninas One of the many things I love is a baby. I think I met one of the cutest babies Friday morning! As you will read in later in this blog, my Mom had a homebirth experience where she never actually met little baby Antonio. She contacted the midwife, Juana, to see if she could meet the baby and see the family again. Juana had been visiting this family and bathing the mother and baby for seven days since Antonio had been born and Friday was the eighth and final day. This day is called “The Last Bath”. She invited Mom to meet the baby on this day and Mom invited me. The family lived in a concrete house with a metal roof and from what I could see, it was small and dirty. ... read more

Reflections from Las Ninas The River When my Dad and I were driving back from Guatemala City after dropping Taylor off at the airport, our driver said that we were twenty minutes away. I was happy. Then, we went around the curve… and there was A RIVER IN THE ROAD! It was raining so hard. It had been raining for the past four hours. If you stacked two notebooks from top to bottom, that was about how deep it was, or maybe even deeper. I kept asking Dad, “Are we going to go through it?” And I kept saying, “I don’t want to go through it!” But then, our driver said, “If all of these cars are going through it, I think we can too.” I said, “No, No, No”, but then I said, “OK.” I ... read more

Reflections from Las Ninas Our School If there is one thing I learned in our second week in Guatemala it is that learning a new language is exhausting! I think it is fair to say that all of us have really good teachers! My teacher’s name is Elvira, Leigh’s teacher is Benedicto, my dad’s teacher is Maria, and my mom’s teacher is Fredie The school is right on the lake with gravel walkways leading to the different classrooms. It is all outside with two buildings on the property. Both buildings have a little patio that has a cover so you can have class there. Also there are two little huts with wooden tables and stools that don’t have walls but have a straw roof. They are fun to learn in! On my first day I ... read more

Reflections from Las Ninas The day we left we woke up at 5:30 and drove to the airport. We took two planes and a 4 hour van ride. When we got to our house it was 7:00 (Guatemala time, 9:00 US time). I was so tired. I woke up the next day and the lake was shining blue. We could see so far and so far up the volcano too. Then we went to the market and it was crowded and overwhelming. There were a lot of people who did not look like me and wearing different kinds of clothes. But now I am quite used to it. I made two friends next door. We’ve been swimming in the lake. It’s warmer than I thought and fun. Leigh The Arrival It was a long journey ... read more

Today we spent our last morning at Casa Del Mundo and had our last jump off the balcony. Then we were off to Panajachel and Solola. Panajachel is the main tourist jumping off point for Lake Atitlan, which is apparent from the large market. The market clearly caters to locasl with huge baskets of creepy dried fish and tourists with abundant Mayan crafts. Here, they embrace aggressive selling tactics as seen in the photo with Ryan. Solola is a very authentic modern Mayan town, with a very unique cemetery. Our visit coincided with their annual fair which made for quite an experience. I never expected to see a merry-go-round assembled outside the entrance to a graveyard. “The hand cranked ferris wheel was one of the more thrilling and scary rides” Ryan been on in a while. ... read more
