La Casa del Mundo, Jaibilito When this was all a month's vacation plan, I had included a few hotel stays in my month, thinking that I may be feeling a bit isolated in my apartment and in need of some socialization from time to time. When it moved from a vacation plan to a 'retirement' plan, I cancelled some hotels but kept just this one. I had already paid for one night of it, so I figured for $75/nt for the primo room #13 with the full frontal view of the lake, why not...and I am so glad i did! I arrived at their dock, just a short 10 mins ride from my dock at Pasajcap, and climbed the 300 steps to reception, where I needed to sit down and catch my breath. Man, am I ... read more

A couple of weeks ago my mom, sisters (including Sheena), and Joel Dean (sausages) came for a visit. It was a vacation for Ben and I as well, being only our second time away from quetzaltrekkers. We met them at the airport and taxied to Antigua (nobody wants to spend any time in the capital). First day was spent just milling about, checking out the market, stuffing our faces, exploring church ruins (antigua has been destroyed by earthquakes a number of times). Next day we were up early to climb volcan pacaya, getting up close and personal with "liquid hot magma" (of course it was really lava, but alison sounded so cute repeating this phrase that we let it slide). It was really amazing to see a river of lava eat its way through older rocks ... read more

The group all went on the boat trip, nice early start (except Michelle as ill). We had a breakfast stop in an amazing place. Would love to come back and stay here. It was called Hotel la Casa, he views were amazing, the food divine... It was a great start to the day. We then went onto Santiago Atitlan, went to the church. Here we had another odd experience. We went to visit Maximon, their god that looks after them. He resides in different houses and you can go any give him rum and cigarettes... He is a wooden statue that they dress, changing these weekly, and there are saints and his father living in the same house as him where ever that may be!!! Weird... But good money making scheme as you have to pay ... read more

Lake Atitlan and Semuc Champey - Guatemala Two of the most beautiful places I have ever seen are in Guatemala, and both involve my favourite molecules hydrogen and oxygen (clue: in the right proportion, they make water). The first, Lake Atitlan, is relatively easy to get to. The second, Semuc Champey, involves a little more adventure, a la Romancing The Stone, but is worth every ounce of effort. I first visited Guatemala last March, on a scouting trip for my adventure company Sacred Rides Mountain Bike Holidays. I was there to do a trial run of a new trip we'd set up with the help of some local guides; my wife and I decided to extend our trip with a couple of weeks on our own. We were not disappointed. Guatemala is a country with a ... read more

Guatemala's simmering internal problems are beautifully mirrored by the restless volcanic bedrock it sits so precariously on. Evidence of its Pacific rim nature is everywhere in the landscape, and the sights surrounding us here tell their own geological story so clearly. Lago Atitlan is the culmination of much volcanic activity - the lake itself is a wopping big crater, and there is no mistaking the imposing shapes of the many volcanoes surrounding it. Whilst sitting enjoying coffee and good friends, periodically clouds of volcanic debris were billowing out of a crater across the lake from us. Our first stop was Panajachel, the largest of the towns surrounding the lake. Only a few short hours by 3 changes of Chicken bus from Xela, we could not have been in a more different economy. The main street of ... read more

Heading off up to the lake From Xela to Panajachel which sits on the shores of the beautiful Lago Atitlan surrounded by volcanoes over 3500 ft high (that's not the biggest) we found a friendly local familly run hotel named Villa Lupita in the old town, with a view over the lake from the roof terrace. Know to locals as Pana, the town has a toursity feel, with lots of indigenous handy crafts, which doen't sound too appealing, but we found it really friendly and enjoyed our stay. Marcel discovered the Guatemalan tipico breakfast and thus ate it everyday thereafter consiting of: sausage, scrambled egg (huevos revoltos), bleack beans, cream, plantain, torilla, coffee. During our stay we had coffee with a local who was a decendant of a coffee finca owner, he began to talk about his ... read more

Wed 17th Dec 08 Just after lunch Fran, Brad & myself hired 3 mountain bikes & threw them on top of a chicken bus. We took the bus to a town at the top of the hills. We biked down the crazy road with extreme drops that leads back into Panajachel. There were some hairy turns & near misses with oncoming chicken buses but it was great fun all the same. It took about 10 minutes to reach the bottom. Then we cycled the 4 kms to the neighbouring town of Santa Catherina Pollopa. That night we had a really good bbq in the hotel grounds, I drank a nice bottle of red wine. ... read more

Tim Version: * Traveled to Lago de Atitlan and stayed in partying drunk San Pedro, then chilled yoga wind-chime filled San Marcos. * Loved kicking back relaxing, swimming in finally some clean water, and just generally soaking up the good life. The version that once again reminded me how sadly water addicted I am...: Lago De Atitlan, playground of the rich, chill out spot of the same, also known for partying, drugs, alcohol, yoga, the sound of windchimes and lots of original Mayan people and dialects. Really it is a little of everything and it lives up to all those reputations! The bus ride there from Antigua, shite... thats all there is to say. Beautiful views as always but the roads, while fairly new, are still often only half constructed leaving you with a bruised bum ... read more

Tues 16th Today Fran, Christina, Brenda, Brad & myself hired a boat. We 1st went to Santa Cruz for breakfast at the Lost Iguana with spectacular views of Central America's deepest lake. Then we crossed to San Iago de Atitlan where the mainly Tz'utijil & Kakchiquel have a deity which is an amalgamation of christian & Mayan saints, the Spanish conquistador Avildera, St. Simon & Judas Iscariot all fused together in a large wooden statue called Maximon. We were very lucky to witness a rite asking for a pregnancy blessing. We offered some money to him & in return we were allowed to take a photo. We saw the shaman pray in spanish & mayan, offering him libations, money & his favourite cigarettes. Then we went to a beach near San Pedro for a swim. We ... read more

Mon 15th Guatemala We awoke early & packed our stuff. We loaded the collectivo & settled in for the long drive to Panajachel. The journey was uneventful. At the border I avoided the $27 Mexican Departure tax by simple saying "yo regresso" " I return" to the border official. Uffe & I had some fried chicken from a road side stall at the crossing while we were trying to change our pesos to quetzales. He was very ill for days afterwards, I was fine. The rest of the guys got a bug later but it did not effect me. We got another collectivo on the Guatemalan side, this guy tied the backpacks very precariously so we helped with the tying to ensure the packs arrived with us. We stopped for coffee in Huehuetenango, a small town ... read more
