Hola Amigos!!!!... This last 2 weeks i have been staying in Panajachel in Guatemala studying Spanish. Its a little village next to the beautiful lake Atitlan which is surrounded by volcanoes and many indigenous villages. Its been great staying in one places for so long and actually also doing something new and productive. Learning Spanish has been really difficult for me the first 2 days my head was simple pounding and i would be in bed by 9pm. After my first week i started to feel that it is finally sinking in my thick head and im able to build broken sentenses at this stage, on my own. Although its very difficult im still having a great time learning and i hope that with the little i have learnt it will give me the motivation to ... read more

My Final Week My evening out with Luis and Marcario began a little strange...Oh yeah, it was because Marcario never showed up...¡Lástima! (I later found out that he got there about 5 minutes after we left). We ordered sandwiches at Guajimbos in Panajachel and then carried them off to the shore of the lake where we sat and drank beer and watched the sunset. We joked about Don Chema selling everything that people give him, about the well that Don, the American gave $3000 to build (Water costs, at most, $50 per YEAR in Guatemala), and about how mad Larry was going to be when he got back and found out that the pressure washer had a faulty power cable. I had probably the most surreal moment there when I realized that I had so much ... read more

15 February 2008 We left San Cristobal bright and early at 7 am. A bit too early for some of us, notably me! And headed for the border, this was definately an interesting experience. The ADO dropped us off at the Mexican immigration office, this took all of 5 minutes and then we jumped in taxis to cross the border. The taxis were interesting our one had the worst cracked windscreen, we had seen and the guy had stuck toys into the shattered glass! We couldnt see out of it so he definately couldn't. The border was like a huge market lined with stalls selling anything and everything, half way up the market there was car park style gates allowing you to cross into Guatemala, over we all went!! The journey to Panajachel was lovely a ... read more

Thanks for a Wonderful Week, Tennesseans I did as close to nothing interesting as possible on thursday and friday. My job all day was to carry cinder blocks down a ridiculously steep hill in a wheel barrow. There were 400 of them...Yeah. Saturday- A group from Tennessee came today and they are great people. One couple has adopted from the orphanage before and are in the process of adopting again. They are here to work on the archway that has yet to arrive...God bless Guatemala time. Sunday- We spent a little time today in Panajachel walking around and eating. We then got back up and played with the kids a little and then I went to bed. Monday-Wednesday- Since the wood for the archway has yet to leave the tree we started on another project. We ... read more

Okay, so as a follow up on the civil unrest situation I have a lot more information now. Wednesday- After the people got so mad at the police about their lack of work to resolve the kidnapper situation they scheduled a town meeting in the soccer stadium. There were more than 5000 people in the stadium and their demands were just that the police arrest the KNOWN kidnappers before 30 days or they would use vigilante justice. Well the people were happy with this and started to disband. Well, most of them. A renegade gang of a couple dozen decided that it was too late to ask things and they proceeded to run around town burning down the houses and businesses of the chief kidnapper, his security guards, and his accountant. This was really nuts to ... read more

An Entire Week of Moving Dirt...Oh, the Memories I moved dirt this entire week. It was incredibly boring, it would have been the most uneventful week ever if my computer had not broken in the middle of it. Yep, I am just about the only person that I know that has convinced his Apple computer hard drive to burn itself into a state of useless mush. Anyway, that is about the only exciting story for this week: Monday Feb 12: I took my computer to a guy in Panajachel who was supposed to be an expert with Apple computers. I walked in and saw a bunch of really old apple computers on the wall and thought, ¨yeah I am sure this guy will be able to help me¨ since sarcasm doesn´t transfer to print well, ... read more

Santiago, Medical Team, Bear Photos and More! Tuesday: Mom and I woke up...And woke up again... And again... And again... All of this craziness was the result of a chronologically confused crowing cock (I added the alliteration for literary depth). It woke us up probably 20 times between 4 and 8 in the morning at which point we gave up and went out for breakfast. After breakfast (Pancakes and "acid-flavored" yogurt) we caught a boat to Santiago de Atitlan. It is a nice little town that has a lot of pretty crafts and things. I got two cool shirts and we walked around a little and then left. We ate lunch back in Panajachel where mom felt sick after eating her chicken and I didn't eat my fish (it was "grilled fish" as in a ... read more

Beginning of Week 3 I am going to try and stop writing about each day unless there is something unique about it. This week I started working with the rest of the guys on the brick-work. It is a lot more interesting than the dirt-work and I enjoy watching it a lot. They are good at what they do and take a lot of pride in their work. I have learned a lot about brick-laying as well, how to mix concrete from scratch, how to make the bricks level and keep them clean etc... I am have been looking forward to the team coming in from Stillwater, Oklahoma. That should give me a nice change of pace. For the time being I am just enjoying the less physically taxing work.... read more
