Ok, so Ive been in Costa Rica for a month now and still, everything is exciting! Well, I d be worried if it wouldnt be... SO, I have finished school yesterday, which was sad in a way, because now its on me to improve my Spanish, but hey I am still surrounded by all these Spanish speaking people, which is at times still jibberish to me!! Anyway, I got my certificate yesterday as well in some low key graduation ceremony and I am Level 3, whatever that means and am now starting my volunteering project. I did have to give a talk in Spanish yesterday as well by the way. I wasnt prepared at all, but my topic was the traditions in my hometown, like "Kloatscheeten" and that stuff so I was lucky enough to be ... read more

Well, I arrived in Costa Rica safe and sound on Saturday and have been staying near here since then at the home of my friends, Susan and Harry Liang, whom I met at a party in Paris about five years ago. I couldn’t believe the number of tourists -mostly Americans--at the airport. Apparently, 2 million people visit this country a year, whereas the total population of Costa Rica is only 4 million! I had to wait about an hour in a long, slow-moving line just to show the immigration agent my passport. Luckily, my friends had sent Marvin Alvarez to pick me up, and when I got out of customs and immigration,I found him among the mobs of people with signs and the numerous, shouting taxi drivers. The airport is to the west of San ... read more

Beach was great, got a tan!!! haha!!! No sunburn this time! Lazed on the beach most of the weekedn, as I went to a "wild" party on Thursdaz, which caused me to oversleep, pack mz bags in 5 minutes, zeah, wasnt organised again..., took the wrong contac t lenses, forgot my shorts and on top of that, I also lost mz housekezs... AHAHAHAH Well, life is good though! Went snorkelling, wandered in the National ... read more

I don't have classes on Wednesdays, so I went to see a bit of the city. This was my first time in San José since my flight to Costa Rica in the beginning of January, so everything was very new for me. As much as I try to hold myself back from having expectations before I visit a place, but I can't help admitting that San José was actually smaller than I thought! In my mind the capital of this country was to be a sprawling metropolis like our Big Apple or the Windy City--but San José was all of the run-down-ness of a city, and none of the glamor, plus half the size. I made for the large city park, with dreams of St. Louis' Forest Park, and found something not all-together terrible, but certainly ... read more

Buenas tardes amigos! OK, so I am back from an amazing weekend in La Fortuna. La Fortuna is about 5 hours away from San Jose, well 5 hours on a bus that stops at every stop to load in people until its full! And I mean full! Some of those poor people stood next to the driver for like 3 hours or something! Honestly! And there is my *Germanness* coming out again, thinking, what about the insurance? what would actually happen if we had an accident? Anyway! Had an early start again. leaving the house at 5am to get to the bus stop and a seat obviously. Luckily I was able to fall asleep right away, although its not surprising as I had just 3 hours sleep that night, about 5 the night before and 4.5 ... read more

Buenas Dias!!! OK, for all those over in lovely Europe that are jealous of me being here in hot Costa Rica, DONT BE!!!! Its freezing! Well, considering that its supposed to be hot, anyway!!! Had to wear a jacket today! We have not seen the sun since the weekend! We even had rain the other day! AHHAHH!!! Its kind of depressing really! So, thanks for comments and emails by the way! I will try and find the article and more importantly try to find a computer with speakers! Kind of difficult here, as most of the PCs suck!! They are very slow, crush frequently and not all of them have a functional mouse! But its all for free, at least in the school! As you might have noticed I finally figured out how to upload Images, ... read more

Hey ho! OK, so I am back in San Jose to improve my Spanish, which is going rather well! We took a bus on Friday morning at 6am to Manuel Antonio, which is a town on the Pacific Coast, close to Quepos. It took us just under 4 hours to get there, which was actually not to bad, considering we only paid something like 7 USD return!!! The beach is actually not that far away, probably 150km, but the infrastructure over here is just not brilliant and we had to drive through mountains, up and down and well, it was not the nicest tour!! So, when we finally got there it was already rather hot, so we just tried to find our hostel and changed there to go to the beach. The hostel was pretty basic, ... read more

Ok, so, the bus got to the San Pedro Mall, quite close to my school. As I said, I was just listening to my music and shortly after the bus driver starts to shout something down the bus. I sat in the back of the bus by the way. So, I was like, what? Are you talking to me?? And yes, he was, so I had to walk to the front of the bus with everyone staring at me!! Ahh! Anyway. He tried to explain something, unfortunately I didnt quite understand what he said, so he grabbed my arm (why do they keep doing that? Its not like I wil understand their gibberish when they hold it!!) and frantically pointed straight ahead. So basically" get off teh bus, walk to the other side of the road ... read more

Well, look at me, 3 blogs in one day... So, I started school on Monday. Its the Costa Rican Language Academy (CRLA). Quite a cool, organised school, its all seems very professional. I was taken to the school on my first day by my host mum, reminded me very much of my first day at school, without the goodie bag we got back then though... Anyway, there were about 12 new students, mostly Germans for some bizarre reason... Had to do a Spanish test and was put in the Beginners class with two other students, Martina from Germany and Katie from Kent, UK. The classes are quite intense as we have got to do 5 hours a day and Sergio, our teacher refuses to speak English! He is quite funny though... Luckily he speaks slowly, so ... read more

Hola amigos! Ok, so its been a while that I ve been on the website and updates you on my travels... Sorry! Have also just seen all the comments.. Thanks! Ok, lets give you an update! After quite a bumpy start I am loving it here now! The family is great , taking good care of me and cooking vegetarian meals especially for me! I am not quite sure what I am eating, as in I dont know the name of the dish, but its all delicious! Rice and beans are always part of the dishes, but I usually choose not to eat it. Common combinations are also rise and potatoes or pasta and rice or beans in things (red and black) and so on. Breakfast ist usually fruit with something, bread, pancake, egg or even ... read more
