Prague, one of the most beautifully perserved cities in Europe. We had heard to much about the place that expectations were high, and the place did not disappoint us. We took the night train from Berlin to Prague. We stayed at a small okish hotel - Hotel Prokopka booked from booking.com. Our room was huge, part of a apartment, but a bit old. We liked the place in general, would recommend it. On first day, we decided to go up to Prague Castle. We started walking from the hotel and thought that we knew where are going. But we did not, we were hopelessly lost somewhere in the town. We asked someone for directions and found a tram stop, and after changing lot of trams and going through almost all of Prage, we reaches the Castle. ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin November 24th 2011

One of the very awaited trips for me. Berlin - the city with so much history, so much of modern history and with so much of history in the making with EU and Euro. But I was there for the history of the world wars. The city is full of museums and modern buildings. It did not at all feel like European city, no old town, no cobble streets, victorian houses. The place was bombed to ground and rebuilt and it shows. There was so much to see and learn there, that 3 days were definitely not enough. The places we visited - Museum of German history - That was very interesting. Lot of it was repeat of what we had seen in Paris, but it was focused on German history. We learnt that Germany as ... read more

We spent 2 days hiking in Cinque Terre. The trip did not start as we expected. 18th Sep happened to be a train strike. So we could not get the train to go from La Spieza. After waiting hours at the train station with lot of mixed information, we joined another couple and took a taxi to the first village. The day was looking cold and rain. We bought our tickets and headed out on the hike. The beginning was really nice. The hiking trail huggs the sea coast. The sea was really stormy this day and it made the hike lot more beautiful. As we headed out of Riomaggio, some slight rain started falling. We took a leasurely hike to next village Manarola. By now, it was a good drizzle. We were also very tired. ... read more

We only spent a passing day in Florence, should probably have spent 2. By now I thought we are done with seeing fountains and museums, so Florence should not hold a lot for us. Also its one of those places that are always crowded with tourists. So after lot of yes-no, we decided to not stay in Florence, but just spend the day. We walked around some of the famous streets. Highlight was seeing the Galeleo museum. It has a collection of scientific equipments and their development from crude to most refined. It was really interesting and worth the time. Then we headed to Leonardo Da Vincimuseum, its a collection of his many scientific experiments. Very interesting, though quite small place. We also went to some famous squares. Saw house of Dante from outside. Saw the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Pompei September 16th 2011

Since I read about Vesuvius, sometime back in school, I wanted to visit Pompeii, the city built in shadow of a volcano and then burried in ashes of one of the biggest volcanic explosion in written history. Its a short train ride away from Napoli. The ruins of city are quite well preserved. Its all been dug out and just walking through the ruins, its hard to imagine that it was burried under tonnes of ash. Some of the houses also have paintings on wall. You can clearly see some places that could be restaurants. We heard some of the stories that guides were telling, they seemed very telltaly, hard to believe they figured all the details out from the ruins! We also saw the famous the petrified bodies which are suppose to be preserved perfectly ... read more

Europe » Italy » Campania » Naples September 15th 2011

We took a night train out of Sicily and into Napoli or Naples as its called in English. Our main objective of coming here was to visit Pompei and Vesuvius. We were quite tired after the hikes and action packed Sicily trip. So today was a perfect day to chill out and take a break. Napoli does not really have much to see, but of course its still southern Italy, food is still good. We walked around the city, just taking in the Italian surroundings. Its a smallish city, not very different for an Indian city. The surprise was numerous antenas on the rooftops. The streets are narrow and messy just like galis of India. Walking to waterfront, I was surprised by a really nice view of Vesuvius and calm waters. We were quite excited about ... read more

Second volcano in our Sicily trip. We originally planned to climb it, but at that time the volcano was very active and hiking path was closed. So we took a boat tour from the main island of Lipari to Stromboli. The boat was suppose to drop us on the island for couple of hours and then at night take us to the other side of Stromboli mountain to see the lava. We we were dropped on the island, we tried to do some little hikes. After lot of asking around, we found that its possible to hike up to a good vantage point. No one really knew the trail, but just pointed us. We kept walking, very tired from our Etna adventure, kept walking, no sign of lava or anything. Then towards the top, a "boom"! ... read more

Finally after hearing to much about Mt Etna, I had a chance to see it up close and climb it. We were a bit disappointed because top of Etna was closed due to high activity. Well, was also lucky since you actually have a chance to see a volcano in action. We took a bus from Catania and reached Nicolosi. We booked our trip with Etna Tourism (highly recommended). They provided us with a really nice and knowledgable guide. His car was car of a guy who lived his life on dusty volcano mountain. He was in love with Mt. Etna and it was very clear. We drove to starting point and then took a cable car. There was a short hike up since the top was closed. On the way the guide explained to us ... read more

Rome came fast from the overnight train. We got off at Tribuni, which is not the main station. A short metro ride took us to main station. Our hostel "Hostel Alexandria Downtown" was close by, found it with no difficulty. Hostel was better than I thought, nice and clean. After dumping our luggage there, we started towards Vatican. St Peters in Vatican was our first stop. It was easy to get to by bus. There was a very very long line to get into it though, and sun was really strong. It took almost an hour to get into the basilica. It was one of the most majestic basilicas, huge interiors, covered in sculptures, paintings and what not. Another evidence of christian opulence. Of course nothing can compete with Tirupati! After taking some pictures inside, we ... read more

We started our trip in Milan. It started with an overnight train from Milan to Rome. The first thing we found was that train was late for no reason. Welcome to Italy I suppose. Very different from the Swiss precision in train timetable. To be honest, it was kind of fun after always-on-time boring Swiss trains. The train compartment felt quite small, much smaller than Indian train. The width of train was less and compartment was smaller and enclosed. So it was a bit claustrophobic for sure. We took a 4-seat compartment. The other couple was German and were going to see Stromboli. Night passed ok, I was very cold as there was no blanket. Did mange to sleep a bit.... read more
