Europe » Switzerland July 15th 2011

We were looking forward to this trip for a long time since we came to Switzerland. Its THE swiss berg like Mt. Rainier is for Seattle. A Meetup group was going for a multi-day trip to Matterhorn and we hopped on the opportunity. It was a big group around 30+ people and our first time meeting most of them. Finally the day came and we were all ready. We took a 3.5 hour train to reach there. The group had booked an entire hostel so we were the only ones there. There is no reception or anything just the group and it has the responsibility to clean up before leaving the place. Zermatt - the town at the foot of Matterhorn is a small car-less village. After reaching Zermatt we hiked around 20-25 minutes to reach ... read more

Europe » Spain » Balearic Islands » Majorca June 27th 2011

Offsite in Spain - Some of the advantages of being in Europe. It was a really nice surprise when I heard that our team is going for a offsite to island of Mallorca in Spain! We were to stay there for 2 nights. It was suppose to be a short chilled relaxing vacation, something I have probably never taken. The highlight was definitely food. We had 2 dinners at fancy places, 3 - 4 course and a different wine with each course. 3rd day we had relaxed lunch at a small local place and that was definitely the best food. Day 1: It was mostly fly, drive down to hotel, get settled, see hotel's private beach and then off for a fancy dinner. European style, there was wine with every course and there were like 3 ... read more

An unplanned hike - we were planning to take a break from the hikes this week after having hiked almost each weekend for last 1.5 month. But few of Tulika's office colleagues were driving to Grindelwald and were thinking about doing some short hike. It was by chance that she met them on their way out, and well well we cant refuse a hike. So they packed up, picked me up from my apartment along with all our gear and set out. This was our first and only hike in 2011 for which we went to by a car - so different than the US hikes which all used to start and end in the car. It felt very different as till now I was used to the train/bus to the hikes. The "short hike" turned ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Dijon June 4th 2011

We took a train from Paris to Dijon to spend some time in the country and maybe do a wine tour, biking etc. Like Paris, we decided to camp here also. Dijon is a small town, but still like any other European town, there were buses to get to the campsite, though it was not very far from main station. We stayed at Camping du Lac Kir. Unfortunately the day we landed there, it was cloudy and rainy. Our initial plans of going on a long biking trip were washed out. Also Rahul had got himself sick, so no real outdoor activity possible. On the first day, we just camped, walked around the town, had some good and bad food. By chance, we ended up at a very interesting restaurant. It was themed like a library ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France » Paris June 3rd 2011

My last time in Paris was in February, in middle of winter. Now since we are living in Zurich, first natural trip was to Paris in summer. We spent a total of 3 days in Paris and I have to say that I was not blown away like people say, I was ready to leave the crowded city and get out somewhere in open by end of day 3. June 1: I had taken the evening train from Zurich and reached the previous night. Our first stop for this day was - no surprise here, Louvre Museum. We knew that its a huge museum and takes lot of time. But even then we were not prepared for the vastness of this museum. We started casually looking at all the paintings, reading some of them, then on ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Quilotoa August 3rd 2010

Big day today. The plan is to take a transport to Lake Quiloatoa and then walk back to Chugchilan crossing the big gorge in between. The lake is quite high, at ~14000ft (4267m). Its a crater lake and very beautiful. The way is suppose to be well made, though not marked, so we were worried about not finding it and ending up on other side of the lake. In the morning we took a local jeep transport to get to the lake. It was obviously quite cold. The lake was indeed very beautiful. Very interesting colour of water, surrounded by crater walls. It was cold and windy here. We started on our loop. There is a loop hike along the lake, and there is a cut off towards the village. We had read that cut off ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Centre » Chugchilan August 1st 2010

Our real trip was starting today. We figured out a plan to take the bus to get to remote area of Chugchilan. We packed our bags, left some luggage at hotel, took a local tram to the bus station. At the bus station we had an amazing view of Cotopaxi (unfortunately our only clear view of the mountain even though we were on it later!). We walked around, finding the bus that will take us to our destination towards Latacunga. On the way there we saw a nice village market where people were doing their daily shopping, but there was no time to get down from the bus and get anything. Finally our small hotel in Chugchilan. It was nicer than I imagined, clean, spacious with hammocks to chill out. There was no plan for rest ... read more

North America » United States » Georgia » Atlanta July 30th 2010

I was scheduled to take Delta airlines flight to Quito, Ecuador. The day started with major mess ups in their flight, half of the flights delayed, half cancelled. I was flying SEA - Salt Lake city - Atlanta - Quito. The first flight was delayed, second missed, then another delayed and finally I ended up in Atlanta few min before departure. I ran to the flight wishing I will make it, and as soon as I landed at the gate, I saw flight officer close the gate. Me and few other passengers shouted, we are here, but she won't budge. We all told her their flights were delayed, we are all here, there is no flight for next 24 hrs, lets us in. But she won't budge. The plane just sat there for few minutes while ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Ngorongoro Conservation Area January 9th 2010

The schedule had another game drive next day morning and then drive to Ngorongoro crater after. Since we had seen most animals, we decided to skip the morning game drive in Serengeti and instead head to the crater in morning. It had rained quite a bit at night and I was quite worried that we will see more overflowing streams. The drive out of campsite was smooth. There was a overflown stream, but jeep sailed through it. On the way was the biggest surprise of all. We saw a cheetah. Its a rare shy animal and we were quite lucky to spot one. It was just sitting there on a rock, looking from side to side waiting for a hunt. Since we ... read more

Africa » Tanzania » North » Serengeti National Park January 6th 2010

Safari day 2 we started off towards Serengeti plains from Lake Manyara. I was super excited to be finally headed to the famous plains. On the way we passed through Ngorongoro crater. We were going to stop by it later on our way back, but we got a glimpse of the crater. Its an absolutely beautiful area, very very green. Huge caledera but all green with a salt water lake in between and a river going through it. The whole area was just so beautiful that its hard to describe. I did not know that Africa can be so green. We stopped by Olduvai gorge on the way. The gorge was a little disappointment. I expected gorge to be beautiful green like columbia river gorge. But this one was more of a dessert. It was carved ... read more
