Europe » Spain July 1st 2015

Geo: 43.3231, -1.98137We had some grand plans today, a day trip back over the border to St Jean de Luz, to explore the French side of the Basque country - but sadly and shockingly, all that cheap Spanish wine seems to have rendered it impossible for us to wake up in a timely fashion! No matter - all that meant was that we get to enjoy the heat wave on San Sebastian's beeches, and stuff ourselves again with the tasty local treats! It's been a long time since I've actually lived in San Sebastian, most recently as a young school boy in the 1940s - that's when I grew up with my boy Juan Mari. Who is Juan Mari, you ask? Well he's only the most highly-regarded master of Nuevo Basque cuisine, that's who! His eponymous restaurant ... read more

Geo: 43.3259, -1.97542Being back in Spain always brings back memories, recalling my first visit here way back in the early 1100s. During that lifetime, I was a solider of fortune, a mercenary for hire, and my travels brought me down to the Iberian peninsula, where I was recruited by King Fernando himself, to battle the Moors. It was here that I met Pete, better known as Peter Gonzalez Telmo, or San Telmo - still don't know who he is? The Anglicized version is Saint Elmo, as in Saint Elmo's Fire, and Pete is the patron saint of sailors.Anyway, Pete and I used to nurse our wounds after a day of murdering and pillaging, over steaming bowls of hand-pulled ramen that I would often prepare for us, after a particularly exhausting battle. Even in scorching-hot Spain, nothing ... read more

Geo: 43.3231, -1.98137I love San Sebastian, and not only for the beautiful beaches, the beautiful food, and the beautiful women - I love it also because there's a special place in my heart for my boy Sebastian, for whom this town was named after.  How did we meet?  Well, in a previous life, I was a master noodle maker living in China - growing tired of life there, I decided to spread my message of love, Buddhism, and noodles across the world, starting with what was then the Roman Empire.  And yes, it was actually me that had brought the notion of pasta to the Italians, so their entire cuisine wouldn't be half of what it is without me!  It was there on a fateful day in 285 AD that Sebastian happened to attend one of my cooking classes, and we became fast friends, despite ... read more

Geo: 44.8833, -0.15I must have fallen through a dimensional portal, as I awakened this morning and found myself surrounded by a bunch of women. I wasn't entirely sure what had happened at first, having been in a deep slumber back at the apartment, lying in a hammock in the sun. "Lil Buddha, wake up, are you ready to go wine tasting?" What??!??! Wine tasting? What kind of men go wine tasting on a stag? Are you sure this isn't a Hen Party?I don't get these guys, as I was dragged off long before I wanted to wake up. First off, they stuffed me with yet another dubious pain au chocolat from Le 48, a place that seemed to be a chain of sorts, though it surprisingly turned out a slightly-better pastry than the one we had ... read more

Geo: 44.8374, -0.576144In a former life, I once called Middle Earth home - it was a tough time, as I was an outcast because I was so tiny. I was a hobo, aimlessly wandering across the land, from Mordor to Gondor to Rivendell, and finally, to the Shire. Luckily for me, the Hobbits took pity on me and took me in because I was sort of close to their size, and me and a young Hobbit named Frodo became tight like brothers. Oh, the crap we used to get into with Samwise, Merry, and Pip ... and when we thought things couldn't get any more insane, Gandalf the Grey would show up with his pipe and ... well, let's just say that it was rarely tobacco that he was smoking! Too bad we all had a ... read more

Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095Europe is a hell of a long way to come for a stag, especially when it was all just a lame excuse for a bunch of middle-aged men to try and recapture their youth, drinking all day long while ogling European hotties. Not that I'm complaining about getting invited along, but come on now - billing it as a joint stag because Tri is possibly setting a wedding date two years from now, and calling it Tri's 40th and Tam's 39th birthday celebrations, too? Whatever it takes to convince the women to allow us to go, I guess!Luckily for me, I've been a lifelong bachelor in my countless previous incarnations, and will forever be one in all my future reincarnations, as well - Lil B answers to no one, muahahaha! So when the prospect ... read more

Geo: 51.0472, -114.08Some of you know me ... or at least, you think you may know me. For years now, all you've seen or heard of Lil Buddha has been some random reference to me, or a poorly-composed and blurry photo of myself in front of some famous monument, or even worse, on a plate of food, as if I was some freaky pink mutant garnish. How would you like being treated like that, presented as some lowly prop, and the butt of a joke that you aren't even in on? Sure, my life might seem glamorous, bouncing from exotic locale to exotic locale, but I never get to actually enjoy where we travel to. It certainly isn't me that is taking in all those wonderful sights, enjoying those gourmet meals, or guzzling down all that ... read more

Geo: 51.0451, -114.063A more adventurous, and slightly more exotic version of Hawaii - after two weeks of traipsing around Costa Rica, I can't think of a more apt descriptor of this country. It's perhaps a bit of a backhanded compliment, but one that isn't intentional - really, it's the truth, since the two places share so many similarities. Beaches, coffee plantations, tropical rainforests, volcanoes ... both are tropical paradises, with all that brings to the table.Even the activities offered by both are nearly the same - diving, horseback riding, snorkeling, surfing, zip lining ... while I'd still give the nod to Costa Rica in terms of the overall quality, value, and variety of these activities, you can really have a nearly identical vacation in either locale. I'd even go so far as to suggest that you ... read more

Geo: 10.64, -85.45Last full day of the trip - always a depressing proposition, but perhaps even more so in this case, since the only planned activity was a long, depressing drive to an even more depressing location - the Hilton Hotel at the Liberia airport. Sure, according to the reviews, the hotel is nice with a decent pool, but come on - staying out by the airport? Is that ever fun? Unfortunately, there wasn't much choice in this case, since we have an early morning flight back to Calgary tomorrow ...Liberia city itself isn't too far away from the airport, but by most accounts, the city is a pretty depressing place - a bigger Costa Rican city without much of interest to tourists - so there was no real incentive to stay there either, as at ... read more

Geo: 10.4958, -85.355Scientific fact - colourful little paper umbrellas make tropical drinks taste better when in paradise. It's something we've proven over and over the past few days in the laid back areas of Playa Carrillo and Playa Samara, where we are finishing up our last bit of beach time in Costa Rica. There's probably no better place to wind down this trip, since tomorrow night will be spent at a hotel near the Liberia airport, a location that was chosen solely because of the fact that we have an early flight back home.Carrillo ended up being a great choice, with the prettiest beach we've seen so far in Costa Rica, and one that was nearly empty every day that we were there. Even better was the fact that our hotel maintains a small kiosk at ... read more
