ahhh, just wait! So I had one class today and it went well. I figured out that if you talk softly, they quiet themselves and it saves my voice. One point for me. So first I slept in, then I had one class, free lunch, and then I took a nap. Oh, but I shopped too. Shopping seemed easier last night with Bart. But I fared pretty well. I got a bunch of kids books, some too advanced for now, but who knows if I'll be able to find them when it's not the start of the school year or if they'll be on sale then. So the cashier lady was really nice and apparently if you spend so much money or buy so many books (still nto sure which) they give you a 10 Yuan ... read more

I survived 5 classes today! Tomorrow I have only 1. Monday I have none, but I think I still have to show up for the flag raising ceremony. At 7:30am. In the hot sun. sigh. Had dinner with Bart tonight. I still can't believe how cheap it is to eat out. I only spent $5 and got a prawn the size of my hand (well, it's head and tail were still on, but still) in my noodles/soup. He tipped me off that I can use kiddie books, both story and learning/workbooks, to help learn Chinese. I'm certainly not going to do it using my crappy text books 2x a week. Example of how crappy: "Examine the 5 radicals listed below and their meanings." ok, sure except that there are only 4 listed. Someone was sleeping on ... read more

Ok, so I'm typing this on my "new" computer. As in, the one the school gave me in my room. My laptop, as a Mac, they can't figure out how to get it to work (I don't understand why) so I'll use it at Starbucks or something. THey said they would have to change the IP address, and I didn't want to do that, because then I couldn't use it anywhere else. Besides, this way I can use a Chinese keyboard and all of my programs are in Chinese. Talk about crash course in reading, eh? So here are some pictiures, finally. I have a USB drive on the front of this machine, so I just transfer from my laptop to my thumb drive to here, and VIOLA! Enjoy. Pictures of the school in the next ... read more

So, in short, my internet is down and I'm using my contact teacher's. So no pics. Onward. The contract signing ceremony went well yesterday. It was pretty hysterical to see 114 teachers (us) flanked by 2 people each, and everyone had a bouquet of flowers that would make your head spin. Seriously, if you hold the bottom down by your waist, they still cover your face. I thought I had a vase in mine. Nope. The flowers are just that heavy. The celebration banquet served us 12 courses. I ate most of them, with Anthony refilling my bowl constantly. They dont' seem put off by the fact that I don't eat beef or pork. Whew! My new principal is Iris, and my contact teacher Anthony. Both are really nice people who speak excellent English. I also ... read more

Today I shopped at Walmart. Things we never thought would happen. But they have SIM cards and now I have a cell phone. I like having my third arm back. I put 50 Yuan on the phone, but it seems to think I only have 30. One one hand it's only $3, but if this happens again, I'm going to be annoyed. We're thinking activation charge or something. I did also get soap, nail polish, Snickers, instant coffee, a hairdryer (to dry my clothes), and underwear. It doesn't get any better than this. Tomorrow, me and my glamorous Walmart bag luggage will go to my school and new and final home. We sign our contracts at 9:30 and then have a banquet. And then they help me carry all my luggage. I've been told I live ... read more

howdy! This am, at 7 o'clock bright and early, we met, stood around for 30 mn, and then all went to the hospital for exams. Yes, all 120 of us. We had our eyes and ears checked, EKGs, ultrasounds, x-rays, blood work (after which we could finally eat), pee in a cup and carry it to a tray, blood pressure all checked. The Chinese are excellent at moving crowds along--we were done and gone by 1045. (Well, my group. Some took a bit longer. But that's because groups of Chinese started showing up later on, making the lines longer.) Had our police interviews this afternoon. They seemed to harass anyone of Asian descent. At least that's the way the stories are coming back. I was asked one question for my entire interview: How long do you ... read more

And here I am, finally, in Shenzhen! We are staying at a really nice resort. It’s surrounded by trees and set in a valley it seems. I can hardly wait to take pictures. We even have a shooting range , golf, tennis, horse riding, boating, and fishing. The rooms are huge and nice. And now I have high speed internet in my room! (though, I do have to share with my roommate.) But at least I have a double bed now (instead of the single I had before) and the room doesn’t feel as humid. This place has much nicer AC. And the 2 meals we had here today both had a table loaded with fruit and tonight they had actual bread and butter! Heaven! We spent the morning on the road and then the afternoon ... read more

It’s been a busy past few days to saw the least. I’ve barely had time to email much less blog. And when I did, the pictures just wouldn’t upload. So here I am finally. We’re finishing up in Zhuhai now. I’ve already had my Chinese test, and Monday I had my teaching presentation. It went alright. We’re supposed to act up like real kids do (we’ve had a bit of fun doing that since as kids, none of us ever did that—we were always the goody two shoes studious ones). We accidentally broke the chandelier twice, just to give you an idea. And we had people hiding under desks, stealing the teacher’s stuff, talking on phones, writing inappropriate pictures on the board, lots of note passing, even a fight. Hilarious. Even the critiquers were in on ... read more
