Thanksgiving doesn't just happen on the fourth Thursday of November. It happens whenever you want it to and let it. My teachers group held ours today. A friend of mine made a comment that you can tell the economy here is changing because there are more street vendors now. Where I'm at is an upper income neighborhood and there were only 2 stands by my school when I got here in Sept. Now, within a 5 mn walk, I don't even bother to count. DVDs, clothes, shoes, food, flowers, purses, belts, trinkets, I don't even look at them all. They are neatly laid out on carts, on cars (the hood, the windshield, the roof), and on blankets on the street. At the end of the night, some people pack up and go home. Others sleep on ... read more

Meeting other foreigners is always an interesting experience. A lot of Americans (or possibly Eurpoeans, I don't positively know) will avoid looking at you. It's almost as if other foreigners aren't allowed to exist--they want to be the only one in China. Other people are just escaping--from what, though, I don't know. Others will notice you, let you notice them, and then ignore you. We're an odd bunch. Yet, while I have my built in circle with CTLC, I don't want to be friends with all of them. It sounds horrid, but it's true. Many of the people are really nice, kind, funny, and smart. And then there are those I have nothing in common with besides hailing from the same country. And then there are a few I just don't like at all for various ... read more

I once watched a movie that shall remain nameless for the simple reason that I don't want to own up to loving it. One of those guilty, secret pleasures. In (un)said movie there is a conversation between a prince and a commoner disguised as a member of the court (which explains how she is able to talk to the prince). She is envious of his freedom and he of hers, neither of them realizing that they could possibly have what the other wants. She thinks he is free because he never has to worry about survival on a basic level (he's always got a meal and a roof, in addition to all the wealth imaginable) and has the ability to help people in ways many of us only dream of. He thinks she is free because ... read more

That's right! I made it to the zoo! A group of 5 of us went on Sat am. It consisted of Caitlin, James, Samantha (AKA Sam, who I hang out with from time to time but have never mentioned by name), Meg, and moi. We arrived around 11:30 ish, which was later than I had wanted. The park opened at 8:30, I wanted to get there by 9 to beat the kiddies and the heat. James used to work in a zoo in the States and said, "You think like every other parent. It's better to go later." When we arrived a group of 70+ children, aged 2-5, wearing matching yellow uniforms and their parents were lining up to enter the park, behind a few valient leaders carrying cardboard sunflowers on sticks. Greeeeeaaaaaaaat. First up were ... read more

There's something to be said for spending the afternoon with your jaw in your lap and your arms moving with such speed that you resemble a hummingbird. On Thursday, Carrie asked me if I was going to the theatre the next day. I had no idea what she was talking about and said I had class. Then she told me it was free. I love theatre. We have a substitute in class right now. She's not as good as our regular teacher, who is taking care of her husband in the hospital (Here, hospitals only provide medical care, so feeding and cleaning, etc, is up to each family). I suddenly hated my ethics. Friday, many of my students were dressed up. I wondered if there was something special going on, or if this had something to ... read more

Lianhua Shan Park is on the northern end of the metro. It's the same park where I went kite flying a week ago. I finally made the trip back to explore. Sufficed to say, the park is huge. I was there for about 3 hours, walking at my normal pace the entire time, and I'm still not sure I saw all of it. I'm now more confident than ever that the Chinese are very serious about their parks. I came in on the bottom of the map, by the kite flying area. There are statues all the way around this vast field. I took pictures of most of them. It was much easier to do this time without children climbing on them. One even had a group of friends picnicking in front of it! At the ... read more

Or, correctly titled, "International Kite Festival and other fun things," subtitled, "A day at the beach, facials, crazy bus rides, new neighborhoods, and my new toy." But that doesn't all fit in the little box at the top of my screen and there's no option for a subtitle. Shenzhen's 3rd Annual International Kite Festival was held this last weekend. Alison and I went on Saturday. We met up and took the bus for almost an hour and a half down to Da Mei Sha, a beach in Yantian (the furthest east district). The ride was pretty incredible. We started in Futian, which is a really urban area, very downtown-ish in feeling, pretty chaotic. The farther east we went the more relaxed it got. By the time we reached Yantian (not Da Mei Sha, which was another ... read more

Tonight, a group of us braved the Chinese movie theater to see the new 007. This is a much larger undertaking than one might think. First you get in line. Only to discover it's the wrong line. I still don't know what those people were in line for. Perhaps they reserved tickets online. But we got to move to the short line. Then, our Fearless Leader took charge and told the nice lady behind the glass that we needed 6 seats. Unlike the US, they have assigned seating. So you can buy your ticket in advance and then go do something else, and then run back at the last minute and still be able to see the screen while sitting together. She moved the mouse around the screen, pointing at options, while he figured out what ... read more

It seems no matter where I go I am bound to find a park of some kind. They are everywhere! Some are big, some are small, some are merely a nice tree-filled area in the middle of a traffic cloverleaf with a really long bridge leading to it. Some have large open spaces, some have bodies of water, some playground equipment, some are just trees and grass. But they're all parks and all of them have people enjoying them. They are all really well maintained and cared for. I would say they are on par with the Minneapolis parks, and Minneapolis takes great pride in its parks, as many of you know! The numerous parks are one thing I love about this country. Somewhere in between Halloween and Election Day I finally got myself out to ... read more

Author's note: Please note the date on this is Thursday, not Friday. It took an extra day to finish writing, but the timeline explains students' reactions. When I walked to class today, I was greeted by a group of 8th graders at the bottom of the stairs. One of them is a boy .... I wouldn't say I've had trouble with him, just difficulty winning him over. He's one who knows his English well and sees no point in listening while I'm teaching, so he reads something else in class. But since he also takes charge of keeping the rest of the class quiet for me, I decided after a short while to let it go. He knows it and he's bored. He keeps everyone else in line. I can deal with it. Both yesterday and ... read more
