Hello! I have pictures from around the hotel room, this war memorial park, and of the ocean (which I did make it to this afternoon). Tomorrow I am planning to get up at the crack of dawn to see the sun rise over the ocean. No, really, I am! ... read more

Not much to say. No word on my luggage today. I was going to use a friend's computer and call United for free (vs Skype which would cost $ and require me to remember my headset) but there are password issues. So tomorrow... Went back to Jusco again. For 25 yuan ($3-4) I got 3 amazing sushi for lunch, a large steamed bread cake thing, 3 things of ramen, 3 large bags of dried fruit (for lunch tomorrow and the next 2 days with the ramen), and bottled water. I love this country!! Here are a few more pics. My first meal in Hong Kong was Krispy Kreme. And my first beer in Zhuhai. I have more pics on my camera of the hotel's signs and the war memorial park I went to this afternoon. Hope ... read more

The first day was interesting. I went on the bus. I went shopping for clothes. And food. And ate a lot. And used the squat toilet with success. And had my first classes. I have decided to drop a level in my Chinese language class and am so much happier now that I have. I am a bit bored, but at least I understand what's going on. In the AM, a few of us went shopping to buy a notebook for one classmate. We got into the mall, found the bookstore, shopped successfully, and then couldn't find our way out. We stopped at took pictures over the fence of a park. Shopping in the afternoon was was interesting. I needed undergarments since I have no luggage. I have managed to borrow 3 shirts and a skirt ... read more

This will be short and sweet. Or so I say... Perhaps "to the point" is more accurate. I made it. But my luggage has not. The United guy in the Phoenix airport kept yelling "Thai Food!!" which I coulnd't figure out how that would lead to a flight delay. Food? Thailand? Ohhhhhh, TYPHOON. That would explain a 19 hour delay. And my need to get a very expensive hotel room. With 2 new friends in the same situation. We even had a doorman and the room had a fluffy bathrobe! And why I, "might want to pick up my bag in San Fran." "Might" does NOT imply that you will only check it thru to San Fran. And that I need to pick it. Or else. At least to me it doesn't. No, it implies that ... read more

I can't believe I board the plane in 36 hours. I'll arrive in Hong Kong at about 3am PDT, which is when I normall go to bed. So that will work out well. It's odd to realize that this is my second to last night on the continent. I feel like I should be out whooping it up, going crazy, making a little trouble (and not getting caught, of course). But I'm here, packing, sipping a beer, and contemplating what the meaning of it all is and how I should feel about this last night at "home." Bittersweet? I'm currently somewhere between giddy and scared to death. I think that's a good thing. It's still hard to believe that the day I've dreamed about for a year and a half is here. It always seemed so ... read more

Not much to report. I slept, I ate, I made many, many phone calls and got a lot of last minute things done. Whew. I still have to pack though. details... On a bright note, I am extremely excited because I finally figured out how to do one thing: type in Chinese in any program. Like email. Or google. 这个。 My nerdy self is going to go and study my flash cards some more. And then maybe I'll sleep early. Big day ahead of me tomorrow! (not to mention more Olympics!!) ... read more

Well, after much tweaking, the previous entry is now up in its entirety. I had problems with the pics, and then there was a huge lightning storm (sorry, no pics this time), so thank you loyal subscribers for your patience. And I'm most pleased to see that I have more than one! I feel wildly popular! I'm in the process of adjusting my sleep schedule. Since I essentially need to move it back 9 hours from AZ time, it seemed like a good idea to lob off about half of that so that I'm only moving it 4-5 when I get there. I figure that there will be enough other things throwing me off (food, culture, illiteracy...) that if I can reduce the stress of one thing, it will make it that much easier. So last ... read more

For once, I am feeling unverbose. If that's a word. Spell check says, "no," but I say to heck with that. I'll probably use this opportunity to post way too many pictures of sunsets, walking tours, and my favorite: lightning (taken tonight). My arrival in Phoenix was hot. Shocking, I know. First I was warm. Then I felt like all my nose hairs had been singed off and it burned to breath. Then I wondered why anyone in their right mind would pay a fortune to live there year-round. I have a new-found appreciation for humidity. Prescott is like Eau Claire, WI (where I graduated college) in that it's bigger than smaller, smaller than big, things are still reasonably priced and everyone is nice. Genuinely nice. Not Minnesota Nice (which I still think is a crock ... read more

It's official: I have no keys. These past few weeks have been nothing short of a whirlwind. I deliberately pushed it off as long as I could. I knew once things started, it would be one long string of dominoes, and I really wanted to enjoy life as it was for as long as I could. Finally, it hit me: I move out and pack the POD in 2 weeks. I have company coming in the middle. The clock is ticking... One by one, friends came over to help me empty out my fridge and closets. Without them, there's no way I would have been ready when POD day came. It was really hard to stay on task and not just chat and enjoy what could inevitably be our last one-on-one together. After a friend's brutal ... read more

I can't believe I'm here, at this point. After months of planning and dreaming, it's really happening. And I'm so excited and nervous and stressed I think I'm going to explode into a million pieces while doing a happy dance. The Big and Exciting News of the Day: I turned in my 2 weeks notice at work!!!!! I am so excited I can hardly stand it. Oh, how I dreamed of this moment for years.... ahhh. At first my boss didn't believe me. Then he did. Then he smiled and congratulated me. And asked about what I was going to be doing. Then we told my team lead and left him speechless--and he's never without something to say. I have shopped myself silly buying deodorant and tampons. And clothes and gear for traveling around next summer. ... read more
