There is so much swirling around in my head and my life right now I'm happy I can figure out which way is up long enough to type! I'm in the process of finishing so many things. The other week I had my last class at the Lehmann Center. All of my students, past and present, were like, "Teacher, teacher, we will miss you! Good luck, Teacher, Thank you, Teacher!!" and they made a card for me that they all signed and gave me a journal that I plan to take with me. I almost cried I was so overwhelmed. And I don't cry at funerals. I'm starting to pack up my apt and give away my stuff. I took a car load to the Goodwill, have had friends lay claim to some things, and have ... read more

Since I last wrote, I've been a bit busy. I've worked waaay too many hours, had out of town guests on more than one occasion, and I've sorted through my closets. I got smart and hired a personal organizer--luckily she's a friend starting her own business and looking for a guinea pig, so I can pay her in dinner. I just gave my 60 day notice on my apt. It feels weird. The time I never thought would come and it's here, charging down on me like a freight train. I suddenly feel like I have too much to do, and no where the time to do it. Because it's all big stuff. Like packing up everything I own and saying good-bye to friends who are more family than friend. I had my last class tonight. ... read more

I bought my ticket. A one-way ticket to Hong Kong. The ticket snafu previously mentioned was of little consequence for me--almost worked out better for me, actually! Lulu says it may be a little early to check in for my flight, though...... read more

Big things: I'm getting a laptop! That's right! My lovely friend, Jo, has decided to sell me her used one that she got from an Ex so she can get a new one. I'm so excited I can hardly stand it! I'll be able to actually do email where and when I want, blog for my one dear reader (I'm hoping to up that number a bit), sort my photos, and store my music. The lovely Mac service people even put together a spreadsheet for me of locations in Shenzhen I can go for service when I asked them what I should do if I have problems overseas. I just LOVE good customer service!! Little things: In other news, my flight is a mess. Or at least it feels like it. Apparently United Airlines has decided ... read more

I'm sitting at my parents' watching the snow fall on the cacti and making lists, checking them twice... wishing I could just up and leave and skip these steps. But what of the necessary things we must do before we move on? Before you die, for example, you're supposed to make a will, a living will, pick a POA, figure out how you want to be remembered, etc etc. Your life is supposed to be in perfect order, or darn close, so as to make things easier for everyone else. I'm not sure if it even benefits the death-ee, even with solace or peace of mind. Who really thinks, "ahhh, now I know that Timmy will get my wok, John the car, and Liz the house.... I'll put Tom in charge since he always seems to ... read more

I do find myself wondering, as I prepare to leave, how this journey will affect my relationships with people back here. Who will keep in touch, who will drop out of my life forever, who will become an even better friend? How many of those who drift away are people I always thought would be with me till old age? Will my heart ache, will I have regrets? Or will I feel like I have a fresh, clean slate, and starting new? Will I be less stressed that certain people are out of my life (I love them all, but don't we all have friends we love but drain us?) Will I be the one to drift away or drop people from my life?? How will this affect my values? How will this change what I ... read more

So I'm finally in the process of getting things started now that the holiday rush has died down. I made my appt for my Hepatitis A shot after scouring the CDC website to try and figure out how many rounds there are, how long I have to wait, etc. I have never been so frustrated! You would think that this sort of information would be easy to find, if not there then elsewhere. Nope. Nada. When I checked in for my appt, the nurse asked me which round I was there for. "Round?" I find out that there are 2 (versus 3 for Hepatitis B). And they need to be done 6 months apart. So had I waited or made any decisions later than today, I would be SOL to get my second round before I ... read more

I'm trying to recount the days leading up to the moment I found out I was actually going to China. So here goes. After months of anticipation, dreaming of plans that I may or may not need to execute, and those days where I pictured myself there already, wanting to do nothing more than blow this joint (really, we've all had days like that, haven't we?), it was time to start making it a reality or be crushed. Time to lay it out and admit to the white lies I was using as the backup plan I used to mask my odd behavior, or make those white lies my reality. ("Yes, I'm off to the Goodwill/Cheapo again. Gotta get ride of stuff if I'm going to move next year--no, I'm not sure quite where yet, but ... read more
