Enjoyed Mt Gambier, lovely place. Our van park was very central so easy walk to shops and clubs. The Blue Lake is such an unusual colour and the water is nice to drink. The Umpherston Sinkhole has beautiful gardens in the sinkhole and is home to lots of inquisitive possums. Mt Gambier is central to some nice drives. Princess Margaret Rose Caves is a pleasant drive and does tours. Nelson is a quaint beachside place with colourful boatsheds on the Glenelg River. We are now at Southend on Sea which is a small beachside town with a good fishing fleet. Staying at Southend on Sea Tourist Park, absolute beachfront, very nice. Tony bought a surf rod and had fun when he lost a "big"one!!! The nearest largish town is Millicent with Woolworths & Mitre 10. We've moved ... read more

Yambuk caravan Park is lovely, right on the ocean but a bit protected by the dunes. There's a huge sand slide on the beach side of the dunes, good playground for the kids at the boat ramp which aren't really part of the park but you have to come through the park to get access them so very handy. No good with the fishing, too hot and windy for most of the time so did the tourist thing.Port Fairy is about 20 mins away and very pretty but extremely busy at this time of year, still summer school holidays.Portland is about an hour away heading towards South Australia and a lovely place, used to be a whaling port but thankfully now just cargo but a lot of history regarding whaling. Warrnambool is the largest place around, ... read more

Spent xmas & New Year at Orbost, caravan park got quite full for new year but has cleared out quickly now. Had to go to Bairnsdale to replenish supplies & wanted to see The Hobbit, Desolation of Smoag? it was in 3D, very good, hope we get to see part 3.Stopped at Lake Tyers tavern for refreshment, beautiful place, very busy this time of year then on way back to Orbost stopped at an old trestle railway bridge built early last century, disused for the last 25 years. This weekend we're heading to Yambuk near Port Fairy, the nearest big town is Warnambool. Booked in for 2 weeks & hoping to catch some King George whiting, yummy!!!!... read more

Been touring round southern NSW & East Gippsland for a few weeks. Stayed at Burrill Lake Caravan Park near Ulladulla which was very nice & had free wifi, the lake is enormous very good for water sports. Ulladulla is a nice town & the pie shop is excellent. Stayed 2 weeks at Wallaga Lake near Bermagui, also a nice park & good for water sports. As we prepared to leave Wallaga Lake a front electrically operated leg seized up & wouldn't retract and while trying to retract it Tony over retracted the other leg!!!!! Eventually he got the disc cutter out & cut off the one that wouldn't retract so we could at least leave the park. We phoned Crossroads at Gympie in Qld to find out the nearest place that could fix it & it ... read more

After finally getting a transfer case from US for the GMC Sierra from Performax Motors at Gympie, we headed off & spent the first two nights of our trip at Esk Caravan Park. Very nice park with a resident koala nestled in a tree above our van. It's the first time in 40 odd years in Oz that we've seen a koala that isn't in a zoo.Esk is a friendly town and had nice warm weather. The next night we spent in a rest area just outside Glen Innes in NSW, gale force winds all night then a thunderstorm but the morning was clear & cold, 9 degrees!!!! We've been to Glen Innes before so wanted to move on.As we drove through the area we commented how much it reminded us of the Salisbury Plains area ... read more

Luang Prabang is quite nice to visit, the night markets are very much all the same gear which was a bit disapointing. It'easy to get around & the footpaths are all done in paving bricks so you don't have to keep looking down as they are in good condition. We missed out on a sunset river cruise as by the time we noticed the advertisment for it , it was our last night & we 'd missed the 5.30pm sailing. That was the only thing we would have liked to do as the temple has 368 steps before you get to see the view over the city & we did'nt think we'd make it up them. Also our hotel was so lovely we sent a lot of time there enjoying the amenities especially the pool. After waiting almost 2 hours to cross the border at Friendship Bridge, we made it by taxi into Vientiane.Glad we got a taxi, cost 200 baht, as it was teeming down. The Vientiane Garden Hotel was much more modern than we had thought as all the ground floor rooms have just been refurbished & they are starting on the top floor. At the front of the hotel is Si homme guesthouse which was full of backpackers who were on their way to Vang Vieng. We found a nice restaurant overlooking the Mekong called Mekong Balcony, you have to walk through through Mr Minimart to get to it but its very nice inside. Unfortunately it rained most of the time in Vientiane & as there's not a lot to see there it was the best place for us ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-East Thailand » Udon Thani August 6th 2013

Finally left Bangkok & flew to Udon Thani in north east Thailand on Air Asia, to go across to Laos on Thursday over the Friendship bridge at Nong Khai. We could get a bus from central Udon Thani but we're being lazy & getting a cab to take us to the border, cost 600baht, about $20. Udon Thani is a laid back place with a lot of ex pats with thai wives. it was a large US army base during Vietnam War. Easy to get around, nice people & a western shopping centre that has original gear at good prices. The countryside is very scenic but at the moment is a bit wet from the rains so we hav'nt got out to see much of it.Chilling out ready for Vientiane which is said to be even more ... read more

Finally got the blog to work!!!! We started our flight from Gold Coast via Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia, it was supposed to be a fly thru but the early morning fly thru part was cancelled giving us an 11 hour stay at LCCT Kuala Lumpur. As we've been to KL a couple of times we decided to give the Plaza Premium Lounge at LCCT a go as we got in at 4am & were really tired. Cost us the equivalent of $60 each for 6-10 hours which included shower, food snacks & drinks including alcohol. No beds but comfy chairs. Would'nt reccomend for families with small kids as there's no where for them to play but ok for weary couples or singles. After spending a few weeks at Tully heads in Googarra Beach Caravan Park we headed past Innisfail & turned left onto the Palmerston Highway through Milla Milla & then left on to the Savannah Way to Georgetown. The road is all bitumen but a few places are narrow which can be a bit awkward to pass another vehicle coming in the opposite direction especially if the edges are wet.Common sense usually prevails & the trip to Gilbert River where we spent the night was uneventful. The Gilbert only had a bit of water in it due to the "wet season" being very dry, none of the gulf rivers had managed to flow but you don't have to look far to see how mighty they would be in a decent wet. Next morning we headed for Croyden which was ... read more
