We had heard that the fishing is good at King Ash Bay near Borroloola in Northern Territory so with two other groups of friends we decided to all meet up in Mt Isa & travel up together. It's about 1800 klms from Bundaberg to Mt Isa & a bit further from Warwick where our other friends were coming from. We'd all lived in Mt Isa at various times in the past, its a mining town about 200 klms from the border with Northern territory & roughly halfway between Townsville & Darwin, we used to go fishing at the Limmen Bight in N.T when we lived in Isa.It's about 1000kls from isa to these fishing spots on the western Gulf of Carpentaria. We came from Cairns where we'd been to see our new grandson so we were a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Pattaya August 29th 2012

After flying into bangkok from Udon Thani we went straight to the bus terminal at the airport to get a bus to pattaya. The trip costs around 130 baht & takes around 2 hours. The buses are air conditioned & have plenty of leg space. We stayed at Jomtien Furama at jomtien beach which is south of central Pattaya where it all happens!!! Its a lovely hotel very good amenities but a bit far out from the shops & nightlife though you can get a songthaew there with little effort & for 20 baht but its hard to get one back, especialyy at night unless you're willing to pay.The beaches at Jomtien are quieter than at Pattaya & in the evenings especially at weekends many thais have picnics on the beach away from the sun. Took the Mekong Express bus from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City, took about 5 hours but it took an hour to go through immigration to get into Vietnam. We had to take all our luggage off the bus & put it through a scanner but things moved along quickly & it was'nt stressful. Caught a taxi from the bus depot, was 100,000dong about $5US, not too bad for the convienience especially with our luggage. The hotel, Huong Sen is very well located in District 1 where most of the tourist areas are.We had a nice swim & then found Bernie's bar & grill & watched NRL live match & had a good feed & Tony had a couple of Bundy's.The traffic is scary, there's no other word for it but you just keep going & they ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh June 22nd 2012

We've been in Cambodia for just on a week. The first few days in Phnom Penh looking around the killing fields & S21 where Pol Pot had the people tortured before sending them to the killing fields. it's very grim there & awful to think that almost 2000,000 people died in them in just the space of 4 years. 1975-79. The people , many of whom have lost close relatives, are friendly & positive about the future. Their english is good & you can see Cambodia will be like Thailand is now in maybe less than 10 years although the infrastructure needs a major overhaul.Phnom Penh has some lovely buildings left over from the French colonial days & the bread is delicious, also a legacy from the french. The tuk tuks are like rickshaws attatched to ... read more

Went to Singapore yesterday, managed the border crossing from JB easily without luggage. Got the hop on hop off bus for a look around then went to Boomarang Bistro on Robertson Quay to check if they are showing 2nd State of Origin on Wednesday. very nice place, must hold around 300 or so people, good food & Tony got Bundy rum so was happy. We will be back there on Wednesday for the match. Singapore is quite different to Thailand, much cooler & more western but still very asian. The people were friendly & we noticed how many young people there are. Went to Bugis which is the largest market area in Singapore with 600 stalls. The Bugis mall is very modern. When we went back to the Queen St bus depot to get the bus back ... read more

Flew in from Bangkok yesterday to Singapore then had to battle immigration between Singapore & malaysia which was a battle with the luggage. Johor Bahru is very pleasant & the people are much friendlier than in Kuala Lumpur. The hotel is lovely, M Suites, & looks across the Straits of Johor to Singapore but its a crappy day, dull & drizzly but not cold!! Checked out a large shopping centre in JB this morning & hope to go to Singapore tomrrow.... read more

John Gray Sea canoe Hong By Starlight tour was very good. very proffesionally done & the seafood Buffet was delicious. They also cater for people who don't eat seafood so choise for all.the boat that we went out to the sea caves in is quite large & comfortable & airy so i did'nt get seasick!!! Makes a change. The guide we had called Alik spoke very good english, was very knowledgeable on many topics, especially environmental. The sea canoes are inflatable but very stable, Tony was worried he would tip us over getting in with his new hip & dodgy knee but not too much trouble. The hongs are lagoons encircled by towering cliffs & the only way in is via caves through the rock accessible only at mid tide. very peaceful inside & some of the ... read more

We lost 2 of our group from Chiang mai when they had return to Oz due to a medical emergency over there so there were 8 of us flying to Phuket yesterday while the other 2 waited for a flight back to Bangkok & onto Brisbane today.Showery but warm in Phuket & a good drive from the airport as the traffic was'nt too bad.We celebrated my birthday at Sabai Sabai, a small restaurant in Soi Post ofice off Beach Rd where the food is delicious.Today we are going on a Hong by starlight tour which picks us up from our resort, Deevana resort & Spa, very nice & central to all the nightlife in Patong but not too close.we have lunch then go out to the bay where the sea caves are, then swim & have ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai May 29th 2012

Today the guys have gone fishing with our guide Noom, supposedly for catfish so it'll be interesting to get their comments. Yesterday the other 8 went to the Golden Triangle, the border with Burma, Thailand & Laos where opium was traded for gold in days gone by.We've done the trip 3 times & always enjoy it but Noom suggested instead of doing it all in one day, it was a 7am start & they did'nt get back till 9pm, that it would be better to stay overnight in Chang Rai, makes sense & we'll do it that way next time so we can get time to shop at the border market in Burma. In spite of the big day everyone really enjoyed the trip & were very pleased with the White Temple even though they had been" ... read more

Having a great time in Chiang Mai,everyone is enjoying the cfooler weather though a friend who lives here told us that last month was the hottest she could remember in 60 years!!! Our guide Noom took us to Doi Suthep temple on top of the mountain after picking us up from the airport. The temple was built on top of the mountain after a white elephant who was carrying a relic of Buddha climbed the mountain, trumpeted 3 times & died. Its so beautiful & peaceful there & Noom knows all the history. Saturday we did Maetang Elephant Camp, it was Kenny's birthday & he really enjoyed it.The show as very good, its well organised & the elephants seem well cared for.We had an ox cart ride that went through the village, good on the road ... read more
