We were supposed to depart Gold Coast on Wednesday evening but due to technical difficulties we were delayed until Thursday morning. Air Asia accommodated everyone in a 5 star hotel, Mantra in Kingscliffe which was over the border in NSW therefore one hour ahead of Qld. 5.15am pickup and back to Gold Coast where we left on time. Air Asia provided a nice meal for free as hardly anyone had ordered a meal on the original flight thinking it was an overnight flight. Arrived in Kuala Lumpur about 18 hours late to find a majority of passengers had missed their connecting flights. Air Asia accommodated some in Tune Hotel at airport but we were lucky enough to be relocated to a 5 star Nilia Golf Resort, very nice indeed including a beautiful buffet dinner. There were ... read more

Staying at Cititel Hotel, Georgetown, lovely hotel in central location. People are very friendly and helpful. the free shuttle called CAT {central area transit} stops opposite our hotel , its stop 7 and there are 19 stops scattered around the area including the Unesco World Heritage area where there are lots of buildings dating back to british colonial times alomgside temples, mosques and churches. all the buses start from the jetty, they're all very clean and air conditioned including the ones that operate outside the free area. Because we're here for over a week we bought a smartpass which gives us unlimited access on any bus 24/7 for one week at a cost of 30 ringgitts, about $10 AUD. We've been up to the National Park which also goes past the beach area of Batu Ferringhi. ... read more

After crossing the Nullabor we had a couple of days in the Airport Caravan Park in Ceduna. Before Ceduna we went through the quarantine checkpoint, they are very strict on what you can bring into SA, mostly because of fruit fly. We'd had a cookup of our stone fruit, pumpkin, potato and sweet potato, had no citrus or tomatoes, cut the tops off the carrots but still lost some celery sticks and a small piece of red cabbage to quarantine, we bought a small amount of fruit and veg in Port Augusta and kept the dockets in case we were stopped by a mobile quarantine as we're heading for the Riverland districts around Berri and Renmark which are also fruit fly free and very close to the Victorian border. On our way to Port Augusts we ... read more

From Perth we headed for Margaret River overnighting at Pinjarra, a small town about an hour south east of Perth. Stayed at a nice freecamp till 1.30am when the irrigation sprayers pelted the van with pressure lasting one hour!!!! Think we should have moved down to where the other vans were parked.!!!! Arrived at Big Valley farmstay about ten minutes from Margaret River, nice rustic setting with a few farm animals to interest the kids. We used Big Valley as a base to visit Busselton, great beach, very safe for littlies, did a train ride the 1.8 klms to the end of the jetty. There's an underwater observatory there. Next day went south to Augusta and on to Cape Leeuwin where the Southern and Indian Oceans meet. The lighthouse has magnificent views which we did'nt get ... read more

Spent a pleasant month at Club Capricorn Yanchep while we waited for xmas and New Year to pass. Nice area with very good public transport. Bus stop outside the resort to Butler train station and then train into Perth central. With a senior card a day saver cost $4.70 for use till midnight on day of issue for bus, train and ferry. We got bus and train to Fremantle, had 2 different tours of the gaol, really interesting. Fremantle has free bus doing tourist areas, museum very good. Joondalup shopping centre on the train route, just been extended to largest centre in WA. We checked it out one morning before the xmas rush started, easy to get lost.there.!!!! Went to Rockingham on the train, very nice esplanade area then on to Mandurah, also very scenic. We ... read more

After spending over 2 weeks at Carnarvon while we waited for brake pads to arrive from Gympie in Qld!!!! back on the road headed towards Perth. Spent a few days at Kalbarri which is lovely, got a yearly pass for WA national parks which cost $42 with our seniors discount. As it costs $12 for your car to go into a national park we've already got our money back and in front. Natures Window is quite spectacular. Kalbarri is very pretty but windy. Headed to Geraldton next via Dongera, very pleasant drive along the coast. The convict settlement at Lynton has some great memorabilia. The Pink Lake just down the road at Port Gregory is a very pretty colour caused by beta carotene in the water. The memorial to HMAS Sydney 11 in Geraldton is very ... read more

Leaving Broome we knew we had a long drive to Pardoo Roadhouse as we didn't want to stay at Eighty Mile Beach. Called in at Sandfire Roadhouse along the way, glad we're not overnighting there, very busy and dusty, temperature 39C. 450klms from Broome to Pardoo we don't usually do that far in one day but nothing in between except for Eighty Mile Beach which is a lovely but not our scene. Got to Pardoo Roadhouse early afternoon, had a swim in the very welcome pool as it was still 38C, there's a reasonable cover of grass so not so dusty or as busy as Sandfire. Had a look around Port Hedland, lots of red dust, the port is amazing, very hot, 40C. Headed for Karratha but decided to overnight at Roebourne 40klms from Karratha, interesting ... read more

After leaving Cairns we hit the Savannah Highway heading eventually for Broome. First night stayed at van park in Mt Surprise, very small town with usual pub and store. Nice park Was surprised how dry the Atherton Tablelands were, usually very green but now the grass is yellow and crunchy. . Next day Croydon which is a very interesting place but as we'd been there before we just stayed overnight. Passed through Normanton also worth a visit from previous trips and then spent 3 days in Mt Isa catching up with friends. Headed out along the Barkly Highway and overnighted at Barkly Homestead bit of an oasis along the dry and dusty Barkly Tablelands. As the temperature climbed towards 40C we were glad to stay at Dunmara Wayside Inn on the Stuart Highway, just a roadhouse ... read more

Enjoying our second week over here. In Chiang Mai at the moment after spending a week in Patong on Phuket Island. Had a great sea canoe trip with John Gray Sea Canoes. Awesome scenery and lunch & dinner on boat was delicious. Very good elephant trekking and bamboo rafting at Maetang elephant camp on Monday north of Chiang Mai then a visit to Chiang Dao Cave, a temple carved into the inside of the cave. Finished up at the Orchid Farm, such lovely flowers!!! Today we're fishing for giant catfish among others on a lake near Chiang Mai, it's catch and release and the average fish is around 45kgs!!! The bait is bread and the guides do all the baiting up and releasing, they also row out into the lake to retrieve any rods that may ... read more

Left Victor Harbor for a week in Adelaide, beautiful city, lovely buildings, good public transport and the people are very friendly and helpful. We stayed in Adelaide Caravan Park, 2klms from city centre. It was over 40C for the first two days but it's a dry heat so not too bad. Then we got torrential rain for 2 days and the River Torrens which was a small stream behind the park became a raging torrent. It was right behind our van but down a steep ravine so we had great views. Unfortunately quite a lot of the city was flooded as the rain was the heaviest in 40 years. The next fe days were very pleasant and we got to see the city. We got a bus just down the road and did the 5 minute trip ... read more
