We've left Uk & are now in Kuala Lumpur where I'm finally catching up with Travelblog with the help of a diary. On August 16th the mob went from Liverpool to Chester on the train, good place. Chester has a wall from Roman times still in excellent condition & the walk around part or all of it is very interesting. The best way to see the sights is either a hop on hop off bus or we opted for a tour on a vintage bus with an open top & good commentary from a very keen volounteer who had great knowledge of Chester's history. Also had a trip on the River Dee but can't reccommend it as it was'nt good value & boring. Found a good pub which surprisingly sold Bundaberg Rum so settled in for a ... read more

Been on the road sine leaving South ockendon on August 9th. Our trusty transit van who we named Trannie has carted us up to Old leake near boston in lincs where we caught up with good friens 7 introduced them to the mob, We stayed at their place overnight, all 10 of us & would like to say a big THANKS to Reg & Margaret for their hospitality. Continued on to Whiteley Bay which was a nice surprise, nice hotel, Newhaven Lodge & good dining in town. Weather was pretty good as well. next day onto Glenrothes north of edinburgh hwere the weather took a bad turn, they had their highest August rainfall since records began & most of it fell over the time we were there. We would have liked to go into Edinburgh but ... read more

With relatives at South Ockendon Essex, the rest of the mob from Oz arrive at Stansted late Tuesday . Went to a very nice restaurant at Leigh on Sea today ,called The Grove, nice location, good selection & well priced.Tuesday we met my cousin & her husband from Luton & had lunch at The Whitmore Arms at Orsett, very cosy place, nice meals & well priced. Can't get our heads around how light it stays, we think its about 5pm when really its 8.30pm, It will be interesting to see it through the eyes of the mob. Today has been a beautiful summers day like I remembered from childhood. 26C & lovely blue sky. We went to Flatford Mill where Constable did most of his paintings. very interesting museum. people rowing on the River Stour, feeding ... read more

Because we had an early morning flight from Kl we moved from Chinatown to a bed & breakfast accomodation only 20 minutes from LCCT. Its a beautiful mansion whose owners realised the potential of having a B&B quite close to the airport which is a good hours drive from the centre of KL depending on traffic. The house is filled with beautiful furniture so I would be wary of bringing small children, though the 2 youngsters who were there at the same time we were behaved beautifully & were very appreciative of the lovely swimming pool & relaxing surrounds. Our room had twin beds that were very comfy & the room had air conditioning & fans. The ensuite was lovely with a shower over a nice size bath which was supplied with toiliteries. For us the only downside was ... read more

Had good weather for the 4 days we've been in KL. not too hot & only a few late showers. The hotel, Mandarin Court is average but in a great location 5 mins walk to Chinatown & 2 mins to monorail It costs 1ringitt 60sen to Bukit Bintang which is one of the many large shopping centres here. Chinatown is good if you don't mind haggling & you can get some good bargains but get there early to avoid the crush. There are plenry of eateries there but we opted for The Ship which is at Bukit Bintang, go right as you exit the monorail & at the bottom of the stairs you'll see Macdonalds across the road, look to the left & see a sign, "the best steaks in town" & they are & very good ... read more

Enjoying our stay in Pattaya, we were going to get a bus from Ekkamai bus station in bangkok buy after we worked out how much it would cost for a cab from Furama Asoke Hotel to Ekkamia bus station, then 113baht each for the bus fare, then a songthaew fare from Pattaya bus station to Areca Lodge Hotel, it was more convenient to get a cab from Furama Asoke straight to Areca Lodge & easier than hauling our luggage around. It cost 1500 baht for the cab from door to door. Furama let us leave 2 suitcases at their hotel till next Saturday, even though we're not going back to them as we had already booked Grand President which is close by so will pick them up on the way back. Areca Lodge is right in ... read more

Back in Bangkok, good flight with Air Asia as usual though it was about 30 mins late leaving Chiang Mai & the poor taxi driver who has been taking us backwards & forwards to the airport had to wait almost an hour by the time we got our luggage by which time the traffic was horrendous & it took almost as long to get to our hotel, President Solitaire, as the flight from CM. One of our suitcases did.nt survive the trip but we did'nt notice till we unpacked at the hotel. The inside corner was smashed so badly its useless so will put in a claim & have already bought a replacement. Hotel fantastic & we were upgraded to Platinum, highest they have. We could really get used to this life,Huge entrance to room, massive ... read more

Went to White Temple near Chiang Rai, very pretty, like a wedding cake, then on to Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos & Burma meet. This area got its name from the selling of opium for gold in the small islands in the Mekong River. They were no man's land & a quick escape through the maze of islands. the growing of opium is now illegal. The trip takes all day, we left at 7am & got back at 8.30pm, its a 3 hour road trip each way with a stop at the Hot Springs, then White Temple, then Golden Triangle, then lunch, a trip to the border with Burma for shopping at the markets & finally the Long neck Karen & Aka Tribe. We saw an horrific accident on just outside Chiang Mai where a truck & ... read more

Lovely to be back in Chiang Mai, good flight with Air Asia. Empress hotel is really good, breakfast to suit every taste, rooms spacious spotlessly clean, hotel staff very friendly & professional & the bed is not too firm. Was hoping to go to Saturday Walking Markets last night but heavy rain forced most people to stay away. Sunday Walking Markets tonight so hope the rain holds off especially for the traders who rely on the markets for a living. Booked a trip to White temple at Chiang Rai on Tuesday also Golden triangle. Went to the optometrist to get my glasses, very good price & all the latest technology.Pick them up on Thursday. Put the washing in this morning, 2.5 kilos for 175 baht washed & ironed & pick up this evening at 6 pm. ... read more
