This will be the last blog from Chiang Mai as we're off to Bangkok on Wednesday so next blog will be from there. Been tying up loose ends here, met some nice people at Chiang Mai Gate Hotel where we spent 3 days & watched World Cup game with some youngsters from UK, they were stoked when England got through. The hotel was very nice, centrally located & a very good price. It has a nice restaurant, bar & pool. Went & had a meal at UN Irish Pub which is located inside the old city & was very nice.... read more

Fairly quiet week as Tony rested the leg he hurt when he slipped in the bath last Saturday, its come good now, that's a relief!!!! Went to Warorot Markets Tuesday afternoon but forgot the still camera so will get some pics next time as we have to go back to buy a cast net Tony has his eye on. Went to Chiang Dao Caves yesterday, its about 2 hours north of the city & well worth the trip. Our guide Noom filled us in on all the details & meanings of the different statues & history of the caves & temples. The main temple is inside a huge cave complex, the temple is over 1200 years old & only part of it is lit but you can explore a lot of it by torchlight but we did'nt ... read more

Some pics including a temple 2 minutes walk from oyr condo. Wat Lok Molee built around 15th century by a king who was asassinated & had his ashes buried in the Chedi, his wife's ashes are also buried there. Its a lovely peaceful place where many monks live. The grounds are well kept & there's a coffee shop onsite & a small souvenir shop which also sells "monk parcels" that you can buy for a monk & get a blessing in return though you can get blessed without buying anything. It was really interesting.... read more

Having a great time in CM it's much cooler in the evening than in Bangkok. The tourists are slowly coming back now that Bangkok is calmer. Had a day trip to the Golden Triangle on Thursday, if you get the chance, do it over a couple of days as there's a lot to see & its a 4 hour drive each way. The White temple is unbelievably beautiful much better than I thought it would be.Took a boat trip on the Mekong over to a little tourist island part of Laos & learnt the story of the Golden triangle.Went to the northernmost point in Thailand at Mae Sae where you can see the people walking across the bridge to Burma. It's a very interesting trip.Friday was a buddist holiday & Doi Suthep Temple played host to ... read more

Hi guys, got to Chiang Mai on Sunday & had a look around the Sunday Night Markets Then a quick look at Night markets for Dawn to get her bearings. Raming Lodge is very nice & a straight 5 minute walk to the markets. Went to Mae Rim Elephant Safari yesterday very good saw the elephants getting a scrub then a show & a ride in an "ox cart" nearly broke our backs followed by a relaxing ride on a bamboo raft then a nice lunch At Tiger Kingdom where you could have a photo taken with a large Tiger which we are pretty sure had been drugged as it was sound asleep. None of us had a pic taken there. We were supposed to go to see the monkeys being trained to pick coconuts but the ... read more

Hi things are getting back to a more normal state but still no skytrain or shopping centres open yet.Yesterday we went to Tesco Lotus which does have some good bargains, is air conditioned & there's no bargaining as everything has a set price like an western store which is a break from haggling. Off to the Grand Palace this morning & hopefully Chatachuk Markets on Saturday. There is a curfew at least till Sunday from 9pm till5am. There's still a lot of soldiers guarding the hotels but they are very relaxed & friendly & we had a photo taken with them. If I am successful you may see them, will try now.... read more

Moved hotels this morning as the pool in ours was being renovated, they were very good about it & even sent two of their bellboys to wheel our luggage around the corner to the opposition hotel whose pool is operational.Darrel & Dawn arrived just after midnight last night & moved into the Furamaxclusive which is very nice, mind you The Heritage Sathorn was great as well & we will definitely stay there again once the pool is fixed. Outside the central zone life is trying to go on as normal. Got a cab to Emporium shopping centre & saw lots of razor wire & smoke from burning tyres but unless you go looking for trouble things are going smoothly. It's harder for the Thai people whose lives are affected by events outside their control. There's no skytrain or ... read more

Checked into our hotel a couple of hours ago, lovely hotel but the swimming pool is being renovated so we are looking for another hotel with a pool, essential in the Bangkok heat!Good flight with Air Asia, plenty of leg room. Very quiet at Bangkok airport, the locals are working around the trouble which is confined to a few city blocks & they are hoping it will soon be over. Just watched CNN & apparently there is gunfire in the affected area but we are just outside that area & all is quiet. Unfortunately MBK is closed at the moment, a good shopping spot, as are the night markets at sSuan luarn but it is hoped these will be opened in a couple of days.Great to be back here, more news to follow as its almost ... read more
