Enjoyed Mt Gambier, lovely place. Our van park was very central so easy walk to shops and clubs. The Blue Lake is such an unusual colour and the water is nice to drink. The Umpherston Sinkhole has beautiful gardens in the sinkhole and is home to lots of inquisitive possums. Mt Gambier is central to some nice drives. Princess Margaret Rose Caves is a pleasant drive and does tours. Nelson is a quaint beachside place with colourful boatsheds on the Glenelg River. We are now at Southend on Sea which is a small beachside town with a good fishing fleet. Staying at Southend on Sea Tourist Park, absolute beachfront, very nice. Tony bought a surf rod and had fun when he lost a "big"one!!! The nearest largish town is Millicent with Woolworths & Mitre 10. We've moved onto Kingston after going through Beachport and Robe, small beachside towns. Kingston is known as a crayfish fishing port and has a large statue of Larry the Lobster on the main road. Stayed overnight at Kingston in the free camp on the foreshore near the jetty. Very nice facilities and the fish factory opposite does delicious takeaways but closes at 3pm. It was blowing a
Wellington SA.
Cable crossing of the Murray River. gale and very uncomfortable outside. A pity as it looks like it would be nice with decent weather. Next morning we set off for Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu peninsula. The drive hugging the coast from Kingston took us through the Coorong which is a national park through salt marshes and wetlands. The movie Storm Boy was filmed there, it's quite a remote feeling and the scenery is stunning but desolate. Wouldn't like to do the trip after dark, it would be quite eerie with the moon reflecting off the salt lakes. Heading towards Tailem Bend which was where the satnav wanted to take us, we decided to turn left and head for Strathalbyn where we hoped to turn left again for Victor Harbor. The satnav was not happy but we crossed the River Murray at Wellington on the free ferry, apparently there are 11 free ferry crossings of the Murray in SA. I believe most of them are cable crossings as was this one. Stopped at Wellington mini mart for a delicious fresh coffee and some chips. The owner was a very nice lady who was happy to chat about the area. Headed to Strathalbyn with no protests from satnav, very
clean looking town as indeed are all the places we have been to in SA.No litter or graffitti. On leaving Strathalbyn we were on the lookout for signs to V.H telling us to turn left but if there were any we did'nt see them and satnav took us up into the Mt Lofty Ranges, admittedly through some lovely little places but definitely not the way we wanted to go.We ended up at Wiluna where we finally found some signs to Victor Harbor. We'd certainly taken the scenic route. Was very windy yesterday but today is beautiful and we liked what we saw of VH. Going on the horse drawn tram tomorrow to Granite Island. It's the last horse drwan tram in the world and goes across the causeway to Granite Island which has a seal and fairy penguin population as well as many sea birds.
