Today we met for breakfast downstairs. Everyday our hotel has a full English breakfast or cereal, pastries, juice and milk.....of course coffee and tea is always available. Once breakfast was over Corey, Jennifer, and I went for a walk. Our Hotel is very near St. Mary's Hospital. Joe Griffith and family were here over Christmas break and he suggested we go see the plaque commemorating where Alexander Fleming invented penicillin. Corey was walking on the outside and his foot turned over and he fell on both knees. I actually did the same thing in 2019 but a bus was coming and I thought i was going to get run over! Fortunately neither of us was hurt too bad. Corey discovered later his knees were scraped pretty good. We saw the plaque and thought about all the ... read more

This morning was the morning Jennifer and Corey were due to arrive. Their plane was scheduled to land at 6:45. They were going to take the tube to paddington and I was going to meet them at the station. Paddington is a big station and it’s hard to find someone there. We kept texting back-and-forth and finally I found them outside on Praed Street. Neither had slept on the plane, even though they were in first class, so the plan was for them to get to their rooms and sleep till about 1 o’clock While getting Jennifer and Corey checked in and organized, Chrissy and I managed to miss breakfast. So I went down the street to McDonald’s to get a quick bite for us to eat. I love going to McDonald’s in foreign countries just ... read more

Today we got up, grabbed a quick breakfast muffin and coffee and prepared to meet our taxi to board the train to London. We will be staying at my favorite place....The Balmoral House Hotel. Its a small bread & breakfast hotel with small rooms, no elevator, and no air BUT its where we met Flavio Martinez and he is our dear friend here in London. This will be my third stay here and I love the area. It is easy to get too from the airport. It has a major subway/train station around the corner. There are a variety of restaurants. Plus Flavio takes good care of us. Our train ride was uneventful but good. We got to see lots of countryside. We could order breakfast but I just had coffee and yogurt. I was about ... read more

Last night I got the best night of sleep! BUT I woke up with a terrible headache. Fortunately I come prepare so after pills for the headache and a good breakfast, we were off to explore. Just a tidbit for you. To get strips of bacon it’s called streaky bacon. Otherwise your bacon looks more like what we call ham. Also a full English breakfast includes some type of cooked tomatoes or baked beans….right out of the can….no extra seasoning!! York is a historic city founded in 71 AD by the Romans. Because of flooding from it two rivers, the Oure and Foss, the Romans left the city. It was then settled by the Angles in the 5th century. It was conquered by the Vikings in 866 and became the capital of the Viking territory and ... read more

This morning we ate at the hotel. Breakfast was a typical hotel breakfast except for the meats and cheeses and haggis! It was fairly early so there was no crowd. We both wanted to check out some shops but most don't open until 10, although a few do. You just have to walk around and find them open. Chrissy was checking out antique stores and book shops. I was hitting the souvenir shops. We each found what we were looking for. Once back at the hotel we dragged our luggage downstairs because our cab as there. I was a 10 minute ride, but we didn't want to rag our suitcases up and down hill that far. The Waverly terminal was large but we found our train easily. We boarded and waited to depart.. It was a ... read more

This morning we walked toward The Edinburgh Castle for a special place Chrissy picked out for breakfast. It was called The Deacon's House Cafe and was known for its traditional Scottish porridge and haggis breakfast sausage. It wasn't supposed to open until 10:00 so we took our time taking pictures and checking out shops that were open (most don't open until 10). When we arrived they had opened early but there was still one table open. We ordered the porridge (which is like oats) and the breakfast platter, which had scrambled eggs, blistered tomatoes. haggis sausage, bacon, beans, and wheat toast. We shared the items we ordered because we wanted to try their scones and shortbread too. The haggis sausage was amazing. The porridge wasn't far behind. The porridge was topped with red fruit which added ... read more

Last night Chrissy and I flew from JFK to Edinburgh. I like the night time flights so you can sleep on the plane and be somewhat on the time of your arrival Country. Sadly we didn’t sleep very much…Chrissy much less than me. When we arrived we went through border control faster than any country I’ve visited. Our plane arrived 20 minutes early. We did disembarked the plane, border control, picked up our luggage, and we’re ready for our hotel taxi by 10:30. Our planed arrival time was 10:005 so I didn’t engage the taxi until noon. We couldn’t reach the taxi nor Booking, so we had to wait Our taxi driver was awesome. He was born in London and moved to Edinburgh when he was five. He shared a wealth of knowledge about the city ... read more

This morning we got coffee and pastries at a local bake shop downtown, then we headed to Acadia National Park. We have travelled together to many national parks but here the workers were the most unfriendly, rude people we’ve ever encountered. It seemed they were very put out when we asked a question or needed help. It did not start out as a good experience. We drove through the park and got to visit several sites but we weren’t permitted to drive up Cadillac mountain because we didn’t have a reservation. We would have liked to see the view from atop the mountain. We did hike the short distance to Jordan’s Pond and took some great pictures. The water is so clear you can see the rocks on the bottom. We met an older couple who ... read more

After a great breakfast, a lot of shopping, and a goodbye to the Cooley cows, we left Stowe and the Von Trapp Family Lodge. I hope I make it back for a longer visit!! Out goal today was Bar Harbor, Maine. We planned to spend the night and visit Acadia National Park. What I love about traveling is the drive. There’s so much of this country to see and much of it is so beautiful! It’s difficult to take pictures out the car window but occasionally I get a good one. Sometimes I tell “Stop, Stop, STOP!” and Terry stops! I even take pictures through the rainy windows! Today was another day of looking for wildlife…I wanted to see a moose!!! We were also looking for fall colors. We were just a little early for the ... read more

While Karen and I packed the coolers and cleaned up after breakfast, the guys went for a quick fish in the river. On the recommendation of Miss Elaine, We were heading up the Au Sable River to Lake Placid. The Ausable River, also known as AuSable River and originally written as "Au Sable", runs in the U.S. state of New York, from the Adirondack Mountains and past the village of Lake Placid and Au Sable Forks to empty into Lake Champlain. It has an East and West branch that join at Au Sable Forks. That is exactly where our house was located. As we drove up the Au Sable toward Lake placid we kept wondering where the attendees of the 84 Olympics spent the night. It’s fairly rural and accommodations were limited. Miss Elaine worked in ... read more
