Sorry there was no blog entry for yesterday but we couldn't get the wireless to work in the hotel at the airport in Amsterdam. We were surely sorry to leave our new friends at the New Holiday House Roma but we were off to a new adventure. Till (hotel manager) hired a car to drive us to the airport. We were thankful that we didn't have to struggle with our luggage on the subway and then on the train. The driver took us on top of a hillside to see the panaromic view of Rome. It was awesome. He told me to get out and take pictures...didn't take me long to do just that. Unfortunately it was hazy but I did get a couple good pics. Rome airport is very unorganized. We ordered a wheelchair for ... read more

Today was amazing. We went to the American Cemetary near Anzio. We met Joseph Bevilacqua who was the director of the cemetary. He was very interested of Uncle Jim's story. In talking with him we learned that Uncle Jim actually fought on the ground that was given as a cemetary. It was very touching to walk through rows and rows of crosses and read the names of the men & women that served. One family lost 23 relatives all buried there. Our guide, Danila, was very informative and how she and mom could talk. Larry can hold his own as he remembers so much about that time period. We learned so much from Joe. He was General Mark Clark's driver and met General Walker (Uncle jim's commander). He has given 58 years to the military. He ... read more

We have had a great day so far today. Mom is reading WWII notes from Uncle jim in preparation fro tomorrow at Anzio Beach. Larry is singing with the Ipod and sleeping. We didn't venture out so early today as our B&B is just a couple or three blocks from the Vatican. Till (B&B manager) brought us our breakfast...great cappacino, juice, and pasteries...yum-o. We started out at the Vatacian..unbeliveable! Unfortunatelly the Sistine Chapel was closed for May Day (National Holiday) so we will miss seeing it...gives us a reason to return. We joined a open deckk bus tour which was recommended by Till. He was right on the money. It took us everywhere we wanted to go and with headphones gave us the history of many sites. We loved it so much we went around twice. ... read more

Okay this day was eventful....we set the alarm for 6am (12am our time) so that we could get to the train station for a 7:54 train to Cassino...I thought the train was 6:54 and we were going to be late so we ran to the subway off the subway to the train station and tried to figure out how to buy a ticket....Of all the people in Rome (2 mil) who does Larry see in the crowd...Till (short for something) the manager of our bed & breakfast...he helped us buy our tickets and off we went to wait 45 minutes for the train. Larry and I found our first McDonalds..he had cheese toast and mom & I had coffee. We had an interesting train ride through the countryside south of Rome. There was lots of land ... read more

We were delayed for 3 hours out of Atlanta...mechanical failure...good thing they got another plane!! Thank goodness for Roger as I was able to listen to music with his Archos and the noise cancelling headphones...worked great! Was a great ride over here but long...after about 6 hours I started getting restless...Larry paced the plane and it was a big one...394 passengers. I think Larry walked around all night and got to know many people. Mom watched and movie and so did I. Didn't sleep much at all so when we arrived at the bed & breakfast we all took naps. Rome airport was not fun...should have learned some Italian!! Just couldn't understand the help staff (wheelchair people). We have walked around the city and had dinner at a place that remined me of Jimmy Columbos or ... read more

Waiting to find out if the Iceland Volcano will prevent us from traveling. So far Delta has no cancelled flights to Rome because of the vlocanic ash, HOWEVER, we are supposed to fly from Rome to Amsterdam the first week of May. Most flights to Amsterdam are cancelled so we don't know what we are doing. The tour company says the tour is a go.....we will see!... read more
