Following breakfast we boarded the bus and headed to Ein Karem which is the birthplace of John the Baptist. There is a church built over the site but you could go inside where the cave is preserved. There were pictures depicting the John the Baptist's life: one of his birth, one of Mary's visit to Elizabeth, one of his beheading, one of his baptism of Christ and one of him teaching. The church is now owned by the Franciscans and there was a service going on while we were there. I loved the tiled walls and the stained glass windows. From there we went to Emmaus which is one of the trips I was so looking forward to because of my connection and involvement in the Mid Ohio Valley Emmaus Community. I had the good fortune ... read more

It was interesting walking the West Bank - Bethelehem and visiting with Gasan Headed to bed for much needed rest. Much more tomorrow!!... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District » Jerusalem February 4th 2011

Today is our last day. Following breakfast, packing the bus, and checking out of the hotel, we left for our final activities around Jerusalem. Our tour host surprised us with a visit to the Israeli Holocaust Museum which was something many in our group wanted to do. But first off to the Garden Tomb. The Garden Tomb is the place where Jesus' body was laid and the stone rolled over the entrance. Some believe the location is inside the church of the Holy Sepulechre which in in the Temple and inside the walls of Old Jerusalem. Others believe that the site is outside the walls of the city and this site was uncovered in the late 1800's. Now we aren't 100% certian that this is the place but it is surely near here and many signs ... read more

Today following breakfast we left for some more sites around Jerusalem, but first a picture overlooking Jerusalem and a camel ride. I really felt sorry for the camel and wasn't going to ride but Larry Richie wanted a partner so it was me!! Kinda an interesting experience. It was rainy again today so the pics I took look dreary but some are beautiful. First stop was the Temple area and the Dome of the Rock. Our guide does such a great job of explaining how Christianity Judiasm, and Muslim entertwine in this city and their beliefs. We also went to the Via Dolorosa (after lunch). It is the stations of the cross and the traditional pathway Jesus took from the "hall of judgement" to Calvary. From there we went to the Upper Roomm where Jesus and ... read more

Middle East » Israel » South District » Masada January 31st 2011

Today was an interesting day as it was more relaxing than the other days we have spent here. Following breakfast we boarded the bus for the Dead Sea area and Masada. Today is the first day we have seen much traffic in the city, though we have been here since Friday. This city is full of Muslims, Jews, and Christians (I am sure there are some others thrown in for good measure). Muslims celebrate their Sabbath on Friday, Jews on Saturday, and Christians on Sunday. Therefore shops are closed all three days, so today is the first day that we have seen all the major religious groups out on the road going to work. Very Interesting. Our guide said he would like to celebrate with all three so he could always have a 3-day weekend. One ... read more

I thought I should address the situation in Egypt. Of course it is all over the news here....but then again we are watching Fox News or CNN. We really haven't heard much about it around here. Out hotel is partly owned by Educational Opportunities (our tour company) so you do hear take among the different groups (8-10 her with us). Right now it is mainly affecting the people that were going on the Egypt extention that was offered following our 10 day tour in Israel. I would imagine we will see the effects once we get to the airport as there will be many trying to fly from here that didn't originnaly have tickets. However EO Tours has been established here for over 30 years and have extremely strong connections so I am not even sure ... read more

Today we started with breakfast at our hotel and then headed out for Jerusalem. It was pouring down the rain....we were sad but the locals were thrilled as they have been in a severe drought for a few years. Our guide promised to try and keep us out of the rain as much as possible but on a trip of this nature you just have to grin and bear it because you don't want to miss anything. Also you can’t take good pictures in the rain. We started out at the Mt. of Olives. It was pouring so we didn’t get out but our bus driver is great and he got us situated so that we could see. It was a really beautiful view of the city so hopefully we will drive by there when the ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District » Jerusalem January 29th 2011

Today started out with breakfast at the hotel. Our breakfast and dinners were included in our tour and are buffet style. Today, however, was different because it is the Sabbath here so there was no hot food as Jewish people don’t cook on the Sabbath. However what we had was wonderful! We started our day with a trip to Bethlehem. Our guide is Jewish Israeli and cannot go into Bethlehem so we with in with our bus driver who is Arab and can go. We traveled through a checkpoint which was really no big deal going in but coming out they came on the bus and looked at our passports and looked in every seat. We were told we couldn’t take pictures but you all know me…..I ask my roommate (who was sitting in front of ... read more
