Today was a test of endurance and who could ride the bus most comfortably....it was a 9 hour ride from Sharm El Sheik to Cairo. Never gave it any thought that when we crossed over the Suez canal that we were going to be on the continent of Africa!! It was an interesting bus ride and our guide gave us very good information. We got to see lots of different things.....we went to Elim (Exodus 15) where Moses threw a stick in the water at Marah and made the water pure. We were standing right beside those wells. We also visited the pace where it is believed that Moses parted the Red Sea. We saw very interesting landscape, many Bedouins, and a livestock market where they were selling camels. It was funny to meet a truck ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Red Sea February 26th 2016

Today we were up at 6:30 breakfast at 7:09, on the bus by 8:00. We were going to see a few sites we missed near out hotel last night. We saw the grave of Aaron, Moses helper, and a stone in the mountain that looks like the golden calf (Exodus 31). It took 4 hours to get to Shatm El Sheik. We got to ride in a glass bottom boat and see the 2nd oldest corral reef (oldest is in Australia), plus we saw many varieties of fish. One thing we all agreed upon... The Red Sea is beautiful. We couldn't believe the colors of blue. It seemed so unreal. Pictures cannot show what we saw. After lunch we checked into our hotel on the Red Sea. We couldn't wait to relax by the pool or ... read more

Africa » Egypt February 25th 2016

We left Jerusalem bright and early. Our usual routine one this trip is up by 6:30, breakfast at 7:00 board bus by 8-8:30. Today we were up at 5:30, breakfast at 6:00, bus pulled out by 7:10. This was going to be a long day. It took 5 hours driving time to get to the border of Egypt. We drove down by the Dead Sea and then off in the desert of Israel. There weren't many places to stop. We did however stop at a kibbutz that was a dairy farm and got to have ice cream. It was very good. I had Dulce De Leche, Ferrero Rocher, and Time Out candy bar.....all very good. It was interesting because we were able to shop in a small grocery store and have sandwiches made. Typically we have ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Jerusalem District » Jerusalem February 24th 2016

Our last day in Israel. We leave in the morning for Egypt. We have made friends and bonded with the people that were on the Gray tour bus (or as Diane calls it the Gary bus) and it is difficult to say goodbye. Our guide, Deeb, was excellent and really helped us make sense of so many analogies in Jesus' teaching. Our bus driver, Honey, did an excellent job of getting us from place to place and even fixing the bus when it was broken down. So today was a bitter sweet day. Our first stop was the Mount of Olives where Jesus is to return. You have a beautiful view of the city from there and on the way up. We walked down and the pictures don't begin to show how steep the hill was. ... read more

Today we were on the bus early but there was so much traffic in and around the hotel that we couldn't go anywhere....so my favorite vendor got on the bus to sell Jerusalem crosses. They were so beautiful!! They are made by Armenian nuns. We headed out to the temple and old Jerusalem. We went through the stages of the Via Delorosa. The place that touched me most was where Pilate question Jesus and finally turned him over to the Jews to be crucified. The pavements where we were standing were the actual pavements where Jesus walked.. Where he put his feet.... Where his blood was shed. I touched them... I took pictures.. But nothing can describe what I was feeling there. Just around a corner is a beautiful mosaic of Jesus bearing the weight of ... read more

Middle East » Israel » West Bank » Jericho February 22nd 2016

Today was a rainy and chilly day which makes it very difficult to take pictures. You must realize that many of the pictures I take are taken out the window of a moving bus....not the idea setting for picture taking. Today was really tough because when the rain did stop the bus windows were dirty. Our first stop was at the marker that showed Sea Level. We were headed to the Dead Sea which is the lowest place on earth so we had a photo op at the Sea level marker. We headed on down toward the Dead sea but first visited the place where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist called Qasr el Yehud. It was interesting because it was in what is known as no mans land. It was near the border of ... read more

.Today we said goodbye to the Sea of Galilee and the Royal plaza Hotel as we boarded the bus with Jerusalem as our ultimate goal. Because this was Sunday many places were closed. We tried to stop at the church where Jesus performed his first miracle in Cana. If you remember this is where he turned the water into wine. Sadly it was closed so we drove by and headed on to Nazareth and the Church of the Annunciation. This church is built over and around the house/cave in which Mary lived when the angel appeared to tell her she was chosen to become the mother of Jesus. You could go in and walk right by her home. The church also had beautiful depictions of the Virgin Mary from many different countries. Today was a lot ... read more

Being at the Sea of Galilee is just an incredible experience. It is also known at the Sea of Tiberius and Kinneret Lake. It is fed by the Jordan River to the north which travels clear to the Dead Sea. Jesus performed about 70% of his miracles around the Sea of Galilee. We started our day at the Yigal Alon Museum also known as the Jesus Boat or Galilee Boat Museum. That is because in 1986 two brothers who were fishermen were walking along the shore of the Galilee and found ancient nails during a drought year when the water was low. They were excited and started digging with their hands and realized they had discovered an ancient fishing boat. They put together a team of archeologists and preservationists and together moved the boat and it ... read more

Middle East » Israel » Haifa District »  Caesaria February 19th 2016

Today was the day we left The Angel Hotel in Bethlehem to go to the northern part of Israel to Caesarea on the Mediterranean Sea. This was one of Herod's biggest projects, but its importance in Christianity is that it was where the first Gentile, Cornelius, was baptized by Peter. This is considered the start of Christianity. Paul also spent time there and was imprisoned there for two years. It is interesting to look along the shore there because fragments of pottery come in with the tide along with the sea shells. This is ancient pottery pieces from when Caesarea was destroyed. When we left there our bus broke down I believe it was a fuel line. We all got off the bus and made the best of it. We probably lost an hour or more ... read more

Today we headed out first to Herodian....this is the fortress of King Herod and his final resting place. He wanted to be high above everyone else so he had his workers move a mountain to make his mountain higher. You can see this in a picture. So when Jesus said "if you have the faith of a mustard seed you can say to the mountain move....." he was probably referring to this as it was something the people had experienced. It was also a very difficult climb. It was very high and the steps were very uneven. We have a dear lady that is with our group that made the climb....at 80 years old. She reminded me of my mother! The view from there was incredible. You could see the mountains of Jordan and the beginning ... read more
