This trip started when Jim and Nanci picked up Terry and me and headed toward the Pittsburgh Airport. It was a fun ride with much laughter. Since Jim doesn’t really like to drive in Pittsburgh, I arranged for a driver to meet us at Cabela’s and drive us the remainder of the way to the airport. Louis was such a delight! He was a great driver but an even better conversationalist. He enjoyed the trip up so much that he’s going to request to pick us on the way home from Europe. There was literally no one in the airport! I was shocked!! The only problem we had was with getting the wheelchair we’d requested for Nanci. It took forever. We could have walked to the gate and back several times while waiting. Finally someone showed ... read more

Today we had a leisurely morning. Terry has been having trouble sleeping. Ed has a cold. Karen has had a cold and is having trouble with her ear. I fixed scrambled eggs with peppers, onions, ham, and cheese. We had muffins or bagels, juice and coffee. Following breakfast Ed, Karen, and I drove up to the Von Trapp Family Lodge. We just wanted to look around at the gift shops, see the Highland Cows, and just revisit the place. If you go to the Von Trapps, you are asked to get a day pass for guests. Since we were only going to be there for a short time we didn’t get the pass We got some great pictures particularly of the cows and flowers. We even got to see Christina Von Trapp in the gift shop. ... read more

Todays agenda was to go up Mt Washington. That’s the main reason we came back to this area. But first Ed wanted to visit the local fly shop as it was closed when we stopped earlier. The suto road to Mt Washington was only 14 miles from town so it didn’t take long to get there. We decided to take the van tour up the mountain and back. Our Suburban was loaded and too heavy to make the drive down the mountain. The trip up isn’t so hard but coming back down is so steep and winding that you have to stop several times to cool your brakes and they don’t let heavy, loaded vehicles make the trip. Our driver was awesome and very informative. He’s been making this drive for about 20 years. He made ... read more

Today we got up, had breakfast, then Karen and I headed out with Ed looking for a place to get into the river. The bank at our place was pretty steep and after all the rain there was a good bit more water. We drove down our road, looked at all the houses and learned our road eventually was a dead end. We didn’t find one place to get in the river, which turned away from the road at one point. We went out to the main road and found a bridge over the river which looked like you could get to the stream easily. Sadly it was posted no fishing, no swimming, no trespassing. However there was an old covered bridge which had been converted into a gift shop. We thought we’d go in the ... read more

This morning we got up and guess what….it stopped raining!!!!! You know it only rained one day but it was cold and wet and raining real hard!!! We were supposed to have good weather the remainder of the time we were in North Conway. We drove to town as Ed needed a fishing license. He also wanted to go to a fly shop he heard about. Sadly it was closed on Tuesdays. We learned we could get his license at Wal Mart so that’s where we headed but first there was an LL Bean Outlet here in town. You’d think we’d had our fill of LL Bean but apparently not. Ed, Terry, and I were the real shoppers. Karen, not too much. I thought this store had better merchandise and was better organized than the one ... read more

Rain, rain go away!!! This was a day of rain, rain, Rain!! It started raining when I went outside to start loading the car….It never stopped!!! Today was a travel day from Freeport, Maine to North Conway, New Hampshire. This is the cabin Terry pick out because of the fishing stream in the backyard. It wasn’t a long trip (only about 2 hours) but it was going to rain all the way there. On top of that, because of his injury, Terry wasn’t going to be able to fish!! When we left our barn apartment, we drove into Freeport. I noticed a McDonalds there that was in a house and I wanted to check it out. Of course it was raining. I got a few pictures but didn’t go inside. It was a neat place and ... read more

Today we had breakfast in our apartment. Cooking was a little challenging as we had no range. We did have a microwave and an air fryer that would allow you to bake. I was going to make sausage gravy and biscuits, but there were no microwavable bowls to make the gravy. So I fried the sausage, baked the biscuits and we had biscuits and sausage sandwiches. They were quite good Following breakfast we headed into Freeport to the big L.L. Bean store. This was the reason we came here because both Ed and Terry didn’t have enough time in the store when we were here last year. This store has everything! Of course everything is so expensive. It’s hard to justify a purchase. we will have to wait till the Christmas sales are on! Just down ... read more

Today was a travel day from the Fairfield Inn at Amesbury to the Kindle house BNB at Freeport. We were in no particular hurry since this was the worst day for hurricane Lee, and travel was to be challenging. Actually, we were supposed to be driving during the worst wind and rain of the storm. We had a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before packing the car in a light rain. Before we were finished the rain let up and we didn’t see rain the rest of the day. We did, however, see and feel the effects of wind. It was only a 2 Hour Drive to our next place to stay so we had planned on doing some sightseeing and shopping. Years ago I was at Kittery, Maine and I wanted to stop there again. ... read more

Todays goal was finding Jeff and Maria’s Ice Cream Shoppe. Somehow it came up on my Facebook several Months ago. When I looked it up I found it was only 17 miles from where we were spending the night. As everyone knows, I’m always up for a new ice cream place and their hot dogs looked pretty good too! This was simply a travel day. We couldn’t find accommodations in Newport that would last through Friday because if the boat show. We couldn’t find accommodations in Freeport that would start on Friday. So I found a place in between and we planned to explore the area. The drive to Heff and Maria’s was great. It was like driving state roads in West Virginia….very scenic. The trouble is , it’s impossible to take pictures while driving!! This ... read more

Our condo was so nice and huge! We made our own breakfast at our leisure! The view from the deck was gorgeous. Ed got up real early hoping to take a picture of the sunrise over the water, but learned we were going to get to see the sunset….the sunrise was on the other side of our building!!! Following breakfast we’d took off to go tour The Breakers, one of the beautiful mansions you could visit here in Newport. In the mid 1800’s wealthy southern planters seeking to beat the heat began to build their summer “cottages” along Bellevue Avenue in Newport. Several years later wealthy northerners began building larger mansions nearby. By the turn of the century many of the nations wealthiest families were spending their summers in Newport. They included the Vanderbilts, who built ... read more
