Monday morning the boys were of course off to work - and there were workmen arriving at 8.30am to work on the flat next door and to also replace a bit of under floor water pipe in A&M's flat (it comes thru form next door). As the owner of both flats Fernand explained to me, you cannot have external water pipes here as they would freeze up in the winter. The insulation here must be fab tho - I am typing this at 11pm in light jumper and thongs (to keep my feet off the floor) and its 10 deg. outside. It is just not cold inside at all - no heater on - and it does not seem that cold out either generally - altho 12 max. certainly not Blue Mountains cold. I did not ... read more

a wee time between blogs there folks - a man hasta take a break sometimes and when you are staying with people, there is often not really the time to do it as you are otherwise engaged living the local life. Quickly to recap - back to Strasbourg. After the train delay got away on the same train at 2.45 or so, just 24 hrs late. Which did give me the opportunity to get down to the Cathedral properly and see the interior of the Musee whatever - very similar to the Musee du Moyen Age in Paris and really covering the same sort of things as that in Colmar, I had at least I had a little more time to see things. Anyway I decided that I was gunna manage a lunch at Assiette du ... read more

yes folks, I think the Gourmet Mink award for best meal on the trip has a winner! Yes I am going to keep this short. After finding my rather groovy hotel by chance today I am also delighted to report that the best meal in France (and my last really) was virtually in the restaurant 10 m from the front door of the hotel. When I walked out earlier I had a quick look at the menu and decided that it would likely be the best place to eat. Although I did a bit of a further wander elsewhere down Grand Rue towards the river there were not really any places that merited attention. There was one very designed interior place which looked very groovy in terms of its design -- but I now question whether ... read more

Strasbourg 5pm I am in a wifi hotel again - a rather nice one actually called Etc. - but still in Strasbourg Thurs. due to a strike (greve)- it affected 2 of the 5 tram routes - went to station to buy my ticket (which it still sold me - dumb machine!) but Brussels train not running at all altho some French trains - returning towards Hotel Patricia the tram did not go any further than Homme de Fer (Iron Man strangely!) - due to impending workers parade as you can see - a lot of smoke from a flare etc. The strike does not seem to have affected the shops tho - although a lot of them close for lunch anyway for an hour or so! the Etc hotel I just found taking a shortcut ... read more

I have dated this Wed.22 Sept. and hope to keep it short as there is simply not enough time to do all of these in huge detail. The arrival in Strasbourg from Colmar was relatively efficient as the train trip is only about 35 minutes. However finding a hotel here was impossible as I asked all the hotels within reasonable walking distance of the station -- I later found out, after seeing "complet" (full) on most hotel desks, so you did not even have to ask, that it was a European Parliament sitting week -- one week a month in which you can guarantee that the hotels are virtually booked up a year ahead. I had to resort to going right down to the bottom of the Old Town near the cathedral on spec and found ... read more

(this is also written in Strasbourg on 22/9) petit Corentin was apparently concerned he might not see me before he left for school so I made sure I got up at 7.45am to say goodbye. The girls had already gone so did not see them again. He was a little disappointed that I did not really speak French much - this is because it was simpler to speak English with Gisele (who is now teaching German so had apologised in advance for her English - but no problem there) and Francois - who was concerned that this might upset his German when he went back to work. He works a more family friendly 4 day week, with Monday off. The Swiss normal week is 42 hours surprisingly. Gisele works all 5 days but with different hours. ... read more

(this is written in Strasbourg on 22/9 so ability to write/post has been somewhat limited) After a rather long sleep - it was Sunday of course, but I was rather tired out after having a restless night in Paris thinking of my trip to Switz. to see Gisele and Francois after all these years - I awoke with somewhat of a start at 10.20. Francois had done his Sunday chore of collecting about 5 different types of bread and rolls from 2 different bakeries to enjoy with their homemade jam and coffee. Then the lunch project was to drive the car up the hill someway - Delemont is in a long valley but there are steepish hills on either side. Then to walk cross country through the forest to a farmhouse type lunch place, a type ... read more

(not exactly Basel - have asked them to list Delemont! - now adjusted) this is begun sitting on the train in Basel to go to Colmar, back in France - after my lovely weekend in Switzerland in Delemont in the Jura canton. I travelled via TGV from Paris Gare de l'Est, which is only 2 metro stops away from where my hotel was on line 4 - another good reason why that hotel was so handy. Got to the station of plenty of time and had time to buy a double espresso (very hot in a cardboard cup!) with a chocolate croissant before boarding the train to leave at 10.43am - it took til 1.55pm to get to Basel.
