Today was one of those days in which I finally got some tourist type things done. Vincent - check; windmills - check etc. Did the Vincent museum first - can we pronounce it properly first people? - it's van Gockh - not van Goh already. As I had a bus tour at 1pm decided I had better get down there the fastest way possible - well sort of, tram. I had seen a central conductor booth on one yesterday but neither of the two I got today had em so I just ended up not paying - wanted to, but you do not pay the driver. It had a recorded announcement to check out when you get off with your chipped card - well you do when you have one. Basically I was walking everywhere so ... read more

amazing how one day can rather affect your stay. I will not say I am over Amsterdam just because of one "different" meal - it was quite nice at the time- but it and the light to heavy rain later today did rather do so. After blogging/watching telly on the huge screen in my room to all hours (won't be the case tonite) I had to set one of my alarms to get up for breakfast which finishes at 10. However my digestive tract called me to the toilet before then. Went downstairs and had my usual breakfast of granola and some toast and jam and tea - returned to my room where that came up about 15 mins later! At least I knew that was going to be it. Maybe the change from otherwise "bland" ... read more

I already told you how hotels were not exactly cheap in Amsterdam - well not in walk off the streetrates near the station anyway. They get more expensive on weekends they say - reverse of business centres which get cheaper on the weekends when the business men leave. Anyway not a v good nights sleep at all - damn quilt/duvet thing being too hot drove me mad - as in Bruxelle actually but at least there was a decorative purple blanket to cover - here the temp. prob did not get below 13 so threw the duvet out of the cover and used just sheet cover over myself. But also a very considerable racket from 8-ish of what turned out to be workmen on the roof, removing scaffolding next door. Women at hotel assure me they ... read more

after my stop in Antwerpen arrived in Amsterdam about 5.15pm - as I said before had decided to take my chances. As usual there are hotels around central. Tried the first 3 star and the clown said 200E - for a 3 star - you must be kidding mate! after that they got cheaper - 105E, 94E - then the hotel I decided to stop at, the Hotel Citadel - at 85E for a 3 star - incl. breakfast (which is a plus) but paying for Net - 2 hrs for 3E (not a plus) - so will write off line then upload. She said at desk that rate normally 120E and they tend to go up on the weekend - some business centres, like Brussels go the other way - Hotel Pantone I could not ... read more

this is written on the InterCity (IC) train from Anwerpen/Anvers to Amsterdam after I jumped on (just) at 3pm - having jumped off in Antwerpen/Anvers (so that is where the liqueur comes from - had one in Brugge - like yellow Chartreuse). Anyway headed off form the hotel Pantone, grabbed some pastires and yoghurt drink from the corner store just by the Hotel des Monnaies metro - unlike yesterday Sunday they had virtually run out of pastry things but got a couple of their last. All set for a little less than 3E - after the usual massive dinners I have been having the idea of payng the Pantone 15E for breakfast was quite ridiculous so def. did not take them up on it. The train was at 11.18 so notionally had enought time - but ... read more

this is written on the InterCity (IC) train from Anwerpen/Anvers to Amsterdam after I jumped on (just) at 3pm - having jumped off in Antwerpen/Anvers (see later story). The fill in is for yesterday then. Bit earlier out of the hotel today - but still not before noon. Decided to head up and try for supposed art nouveau area nr Porte Namour. Anyone who seen the masterpiece bldgs form the small area of Riga will be sorely dissapointed by the relatively minor features here - only some small higlights on the bldgs not full on covers like that in the no doubt rather richer area in Riga - this area has quite a few Africans etc now but in 1900 was just freshly built I guess, hence the small features, not the huge Flourishes of Riga! ... read more

you may heard of the White Nights concept - usually an all night or late night series of gallery opens and street performances (and usually in winter - hence the White - or in the case of Bruxelle more like Wet!). Well I was lucky enough to be in the middle of one tonite in Bruxelle from which the attached snaps come. I took about a 100 as this is very hit and miss and v high ISO - 3200! - just love that 18mp sensor in the Canon 550D! I also went into a couple of installations - one of lit neon type thingies in the Church of St Catherine - the other, poems upstairs in a very dark space en francais but in scrolling red LEDs... there was also a very overpriced large photo ... read more

(sorry if you got 2 msgs re previous post - Blog site said unpublished so did again) this is written the day after and its noon+ in Bruxelle as I was just so tired after yesterday (that beauty sleep I referred to - a catchup day) - mostly setting an alarm so I would get up in time to pack and get some b'fast from the bakery on the corner (one o them nice layered apple slice tarts) and get out of the hotel before seeing some sights/whatever before the train to Bruxelle ard 3pm. When I bought the one day jazz ticket (for Thurs.) it included one free visit to a Brugge museum - most of them are 8E - the hotel gave me a card for group price of 6E - by most accounts ... read more

as blogging seriously wrecks my beauty sleep this will be ruthlessly short. Today saw 2 churches in depth - St Salvator Cathedral and the one up the road, Church of Our Lady, too late to really do the Mennling/Hospital Museum so tomorrow, bought 15 various Belgian chocs, ate 3, drank cherry beer, went to one jazz show at Concertgebouw (Keith Tippetts , solo piano) - had dinner - mussels and chips - another beer, a liqueur of Anvers, discussed the lack of trade with the restaurant lady (weekends are still good but mid-week is pretty slow), the other jazz show - crazy Italian group called Il Vino all'Opera - piano, accordion, drums, bass, clarinet and tuba - like Fellini circus music sometimes - a blues by Rossini (oh yes?) - then last look at the tower ... read more

well this was largely a travel day so not a lot to say (famous last words). Got up at 7.15am to say good bye to A&M before they went off to work - then promptly went back to bed for a while. I had decided to get the virtually hourly train from Luxembourg to Bruxelle at 11.20 so had to repack the bag with washing and stuff - had thrown in 2 lots of minor washes along with other stuff they were doing at the time - ya gotta keep ahead of it on teh road or it really becomes a chore (just done some more as it happens in Brugge). The only place where I can countenacne someone doing it (and me paying for it) is India where at least they only charge 1-1.50$ a ... read more
