Wed. 2 June I will try and keep the blog short, let the pix speak for themselves etc so I can go to sleep and actually get the buffet breakfast tomorrow. This morning I preferred to try and catch up on sleep (blogging all nite again!) and did not get up til 11.15am, showered and went to pay for the room for another night. Although this is almost 40 miles from Yosemite there are reasonably priced places and stuff here to eat etc. Unlike on the way there/back - where gas is $4 a gallon ($3 here) and even a burger costs $10 as I found out coming back tonight around 10pm from my Glacier Point sunset lookout - it took about 2 hours from there to get back here as it is right up at ... read more

Monday 1 June this is from Mariposa, about 40 miles from Yosemite. I drove here in rental car picked up in Sacramento early this afternoon. This will likely cost me c.$280 for 4 days (gas extra of course). Prices seem cheap - $31 a day or so - but add realsitic insurance - full CDW and public liability costs an extra $20 a day - and you would be mad not to do it here cos it would otherwise be very expensive! Fortunately almost all city streets in Sacramento are one way so that made it easier not to have a bingle getting to the freeway! - effectively #99 south-east heading back to LA. Thye only gave me a pretty scratchy map so knew I had to get soemthign more detailed - otherwsie I would be ... read more

Sunday 31 May this is from Sacramento but as I have updated San Luis Obispo today earlier this will be short with merely a few snaps as it is already 1am. Sitting in the sitting room in a very comfy old chair in the Hostel Sacramento - first HI I think I have stayed in for years and years. This is a 1898 mansion so worth it for that reason alone - the room is tiny for $57 with a single bed - but the public downstairs areas are amazing (and wifi). Found it by accident heading for cheap nasty modern motels no doubt. Have hopefully organised a car for 4 days from tomorrow to go Yosemite direction etc - the extras like CDW will kinda add up but we will see (in California I think ... read more

its heading on midnight so I am starting to fall asleep - but must blog some more! May as well "finish off" Santa Cruz as got some good snaps down on the Boardwalk - one of the classic ones left in the US by all accounts - all the fun of the (fun) fair - along with more fried food than you can poke a stick at - deep fried cheesecake anyone? (I kid you not!). I got here about 1-ish and was lucky to get into a room - which I then proceeded not to really leave for about 3 hrs (typical) - checking the wifi etc and doing early post. As I had not had breakfast (in Salinas no time) or lunch - when I got here - finally got a falafel sandwich c.5.30pm ... read more

Santa Cruz - 2.30pm Sun. 30 Nov. (did you know its nickname is Santa Cruise becos of all the gays and lesbians here?) I have just arrived into the Paradise Inn by the Beach motel here and it has got kinda warm - supposedly 24 here which is about 6 degrees warmer than Monterey yesterday. Got 2 buses over here which took about 2 1/2 hrs in total and cost $5 - public transport, you can do it see! First was Salinas to Watsonville, which is the limit of the Salinas-Monterey system, then onto a Santa Cruz system bus. Out from Salinas it was all level flat growing fields - the US salad bowl they tell me - thru Castroville, which accdg to the banners is the "artichoke capital of the world" - must have been ... read more

Sat. 30 May - 5.15pm in a coffee shop in Monterey - the Rock Fest has already been, sorry - did the bus trip down to Nepenthe/Big Sur - some spectacular vistas down there - one or two attached - and jsut came straight back as nothing at Nepenthe - a gift shop and a restaurant I guess, so it was a 6 min stop before the bus turned around. I am staying in Salinas which is a 1 hr bus trip from here as was unable to leave San Luis Obispo on train until 3.40pm as bus at 12.40pm was full - so got to have lunch with some friends of Douglas and Mary with whom I stayed - details on that will follow. Its Memorial Day long weekend so coming to Monterey at that ... read more

rather late - but better late than not at all Sunday 31 May this is definitely a catchup - all those missing days in San Luis Obispo! - where did the time go?? too hard to write stuff when you are staying with someone and being social - and its hard enough when yo is on the road and wondering where the next stop is gonna be! Being written on the new laptop on the Capitol Corridor Amtrak train which runs from San Jose to Sacramento - the State capital if y'all forgot. Boz Scags - Dig (recentish - not Silk Degrees - do not think I could still listen to that due to 70's over-exposure) - is a suitably low-key soundtrak on the Ipod. now to San Luis Obispo - where did that come in? ... read more

San Diego - Santa Barbara 24 May yet another blog being written on the lappie on the Amtrak train - this time from Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo. I though I was going to eave at 11.5am - but that was gunna be a bus - so decided to get the train an hour later at 12.45pm and will arrive S L Obispo ard 3.30pm. It is almost as if the minimum price is $30 (again) - this is 2 3/4 hrs on the Coast Starlight, a thru train with sleepers that goes all the way to Seattle- lvs LA a 10.15am and arr. Seattle @ 8.45pm the NEXT day. What of Santa Barbara? - well I got there at 5.30pm after lvg San Diego at noon - took some mre of the very good ... read more

North America » Mexico » Baja California » Tijuana May 23rd 2010

SUNDAY 23 May this was Tijuana day. So walked down the end of 6th Ave to where the tram had ended last night. The tram went to a junction with the blue line down to San Ysidro/Tijuana but I coudl see where and wandered around the resticted area until someone took me in hand and pointed me in the right direction. Then its abt 10 stop or so and 4omins down to the border at San Ysidro. There - as the DoH had run out of combo vaccine at work and later scheduled after I had left, decided to avail myself of the San Diego free H1N1 vaccination in a tent - as you do on a Sunday at the Mexican border! Going across the border involves a lot of along ramps and over the highway. ... read more

San Diego Sat. 22 May this is a catchup being written on the lappie on the Amtrak train from San Diego to Santa Barbara - better doing it here where have 5 captive hrs to spend rather than staying up all night! The 3 hr trip down cost 30 - this 5 1/2 hr trip only cost $33 whihc is really good value it seems to me. Beats the bus at whatever price - more room, can move around etc. And you do not have to get off and change etc. Anyway what of Sat. 22 May? Walked off down Broadway to the waterfront on early Sat. afternon and marvelled at lack of people and or cars much - it is the CBD I guess and no real retail shopping there. I decided to try my ... read more
