HI - Sacramento
a very grand house for a hostel! Monday 1 June
this is from Mariposa, about 40 miles from Yosemite. I drove here in rental car picked up in Sacramento early this afternoon. This will likely cost me c.$280 for 4 days (gas extra of course). Prices seem cheap - $31 a day or so - but add realsitic insurance - full CDW and public liability costs an extra $20 a day - and you would be mad not to do it here cos it would otherwise be very expensive! Fortunately almost all city streets in Sacramento are one way so that made it easier not to have a bingle getting to the freeway! - effectively #99 south-east heading back to LA. Thye only gave me a pretty scratchy map so knew I had to get soemthign more detailed - otherwsie I would be 20 miles past my exit! Stopped first in a place called Manteca - a little past Lodi - (remember the song "Broke down in Lodi again" by ??) and had a couple of slices of pizza - an "italian" place that had virtually chicken in some form on every one! (I had a vege one - safer than any meat one). Resumed my freeway buzz
at 60-65mph til I found the world's biggest Super Target where I found a decent fold out map of whole of California - added the current copy of Vanity Fair for $5 - and some chocolate and oaty chew bars for snacks. I finally found the 140 exit to Mariposa and then it was about an extra 40 miles - T about 165 miles today - to Mariposa. Somewhat surprised at price of rooms - post Memorial Day they all generally go up to "high" season rates- but got this at Miners Inn for $101 inc. tax, which is apparently a little cheaper than others in town. 2 queen beds and the wifi finally worked. Dinner at the Butterfly Cafe - a simple penne dish with some sausage and v chunky portobello mushroom slices (they must be like porcini?). As this is a gateway town to Yosemite - still 40 miles away - will likely stay here tomorrow as well for convenience.
Big news on CNN is the BP "cleanup" and Obama starting to get cranky with them and their "spin" and economy with the true details.

Sacremento.
Keep to the right! No not Obama's political leanings, that's the road/freeway I reckon. Butterfly Cafe looked superb. Huddo.
