Geo: 37.485, -119.965This was a very long day. We began at 8 AM and 73 degrees with mostly sunny skies. The temps did get down to 66 in the park, but it was always very comfortable in shirt sleeves. We left Redding and headed west to Lassen Volcanic National Park. The plan was to drive in the west gate and out the south and that is what we did. We spent more time in the park than we had anticipated, which made the drive to Mariposa a long one. But we were enjoying the beauty of this park and it was difficult to move on. Lassen is a park that surrounds the Lassen Mountain, which is a volcano that last erupted about 100 years ago. And it must have been quite violent, because there are lava ... read more

We were up and one the road at 6.30 to head the hour to Yosemite NP. Ryan was quiet happy as the tour guide played a whole Johnny Cash CD which suited the landscape perfectly. Being in the NP was amazing as it is at the bottom of a valley which proved the felling you were almost trapped by the mountains. There were 3 or 4 large waterfalls and we eerie lucky some where still running this time of year. They are normally frozen over but it has been unseasonably warm here this year. Our tour guide informed us you could complete a junior ranger activity and receive a badge, so naturally Ryan had to do the worksheet which Theresa was greatly supportive with. After successfully complete the activity Ryan was awarded with his badge which ... read more

After our early morning flight to Oakland, which is the city near San Francisco we made our bus. It was rather awkward having to walk up the aisle past everyone but we were happy to be on the bus. We meet our tour guide who was a good guy as he organised with our travel agent to do a special pickup. We filled in our paper works and headed straight toward Mariposa, where we have two nights while visiting Yosemite National Park. We had one stop on the way at Walmart which was a great experience. We did our shop, had a good look around and headed out. We had a wait for bus and got to introducing ourselves to some other passengers over a coffee. Of the 32 people on the bus, 29 are Aussies. ... read more

Nothing too much happened today except a bit of driving. While waiting for the Weston Gallery to open in the morning I got a latte and went for a quiet walk on Carmel Beach. It was lovely. The Weston Gallery was everything I expected and I looked with interest at many of Weston's and Adams original prints. The books of their images are good, but there is nothing like looking at the real gelatin-silver prints from their darkrooms. The drive across California to get to Mariposa was hot and uneventful. Tomorrow I get to see Yosemite for the first time.... read more

Breath taking day spent in Yosemite National Park. Between the ragging streams, magnificent waterfalls and giant granite rocks it was hard to decide what we all liked best. We hiked about 2.5 miles throughout areas of interest in the park. My new knee got a good work out today and held up just fine. The walking stick I bought came in handy on the steep graded trails. We returned to camp just in time to watch the evening dance competitions going on in the Pow Wow... read more

May 10 & 11 - A fantastic visit to Yosemite NP! The stay in the Mariposa County Fairgrounds was very interesting. We were parked on a significant slope that required about 5" of blocks under the left side to level. When we tried to hookup to leave, the landing jacks had sunk into the grass so much that we could not raise the front of the trailer enough to back under. We had to set the trailer down on the rail of the truck and lower the jacks to gain the necessary inch or so to get hooked. There was a Powwow ongoing at the fairgrounds that weekend and we enjoyed watching the Indians dance after visiting Yosemite.... read more

Today we traveled from Tulare to Mariposa in preparation for visiting Yosemite National Park. When we arrived at the Mariposa Fairgrounds we discovered they were having an Indian Pow Wow at the fairgrounds this weekend. It was very interesting returning home from dinner to the sounds of pounding drums and chanting. We just might all learn something new. I am sure there will be lots of great pictures in the next post.... read more

Geo: 37.4849, -119.9665/24/12 – We left Monterey this morning at 8:30, headed for Yosemite National Park. And it was a frustrating experience just getting on the road. The Garmin was confused and so were we. I don't understand the streets in Monterey and apparently the Garmen doesn't either. Our Trip Tic was no help, since it was taking us up through San Francisco and over to Reno. Change of plans. Eventually we were on our way, with a few hick-ups en route. After driving along the coast for a bit, then through some rolling hills, we ended up in farm country. I mean, some really serious farm country. The land was as flat as Florida, and the fields of crops went on for miles and miles in all directions. I can't say what most of the ... read more

Geo: 37.485, -119.965After a week in Southern California, it was time to head to the hills and the pines and the rivers again. Spending the day on the zipline course, camping in the mountains, going to sleep bathed in the scent of campfire, the smell of sage and Ponderosa so thick in the air it was almost palatable, was just what I needed.A long, toasty drive up highway 99 eventually led me into the foothills and the small town of Mariposa, which immediately reminded me of Estes Park - the self proclaimed "Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park", where I lived during the summer of 2006 and helped launch a new hostel. A wonderful couple that I had the pleasure of befriending this past winter were finding their home in Mariposa for a while. A very ... read more
