Wed. 9 Feb. New Orleans Its 2.30pm and expect this to be added to. I am now at the Hotel St Marie which is lovely (old faced and new behind it – but period style furniture) – cheaper than the Royal St Charles (no $9 “facility charge” which at least I used for unlimited free printing in their business centre of Greyhound tix and the Cayamo schedule etc – and the wifi of course). I am listening to the most amazing New Orleans FM radio station – WWOZ – it streams on the Net so look for it – great mix of blues and jazz and a little talk about the music. I heard a great band called Rising Appalachia before and will try and find their CD. I am still waiting for the IT guy ... read more

San Antonio Mon. 7 Feb. 2011 Hi folks its 11.15pm in the lobby of the Crockett Hotel cross the road from the Alamo, as you should know by now. I am blogging up from the foyer as I got my bag outa hock when I left it there at 12.30pm before further exploring the town on foot. Although breakfast runs until 9.30am, I set an alarm for it but woke up so knackered I decided that rest was better so rest my alarm for 10.45am to manage noon checkout. Extra sleep way more important than free food. First up walked up to the Amtrak station the other side of the freeway and near the Alamodrome – a big stadium/event venue. Temp today was 15C rather than balmy 20C/70F yesterday and a little windy. That new oilskin ... read more

Sunday 6 Feb. up before breakfast finished at 9.30am - so I could make my own waffles and drown them in maple syrup - or something. A god buffet breakfast set me up til dinner time 10 hrs later! Mucked around in my room - the room was remade while still there so I was able to do some travellers laundry before going out. Then not far - did I say the Alamo was across the road and thru the gate? Then walked around North of there - disappointed that the historic facade of the Emily Morgan Hotel appears to be the only original thing left as a new skeleton behind it! Seemed to be quite a few churches N of town for some reason. So doodled around not doing much but take pix, incl. that ... read more

San Antonio Sat. 5 Feb. 2011 Well an entry at last some might say – well it is now San Antonio TX having escaped the chills/freezing of below zero by hibernating with Vic and Carol in Austin for 4 nights. And today Sat. was finally “back to normal” for this time of year i.e about 16C (60F) from a min. of ard 1C (34F). Mind you the outside thermometer in Carol’s garden seemed to be stuck on 20F (-6C)most of the time! Vic (who is future cabinmate Tim’s older brother) and Carol met me off the train in Austin at ard 6.45pm on Tues. nite 1 Feb. We then drove to Carol’s house in the Hills district which is about 30mins drive NW of Austin. We stopped for a quite nice dinner at a steak-house type ... read more

DFW to Austin Tues. 1 Feb. This will likely be episodic, so hang on! Currently on Amtrak train 21 in the last rays of the afternoon sun - which runs Chicago to San Antonio TX - having joined it at Fort Worth, lvg at 2.10pm. It was there already at 1.50 when I arrived, having hailed a passing cab (very slowly due to ice) outside the Sheraton - somewhat surprised to see an elderly black lady inside but it got me to the station - or what they grandly call in Ft Worth ITC - that's Intermodal Transport Centre - i.e. local rail to Dallas, the TRE; the Amtrak train; buses and Greyhounds. At 4.04pm we passed Crawford TX (blink and miss it) the ranch home of Pres. Bush – not that you can see anything. ... read more

1 Feb. woke up at 7.15am due to nature's call and thought I would check out the window. Not expecting (although I knew a cold cell was going to drop temps) for the ground to be covered with snow. Yikes! And the Ipod tells me it is not much better for a couple of days. Getting the train to Austin this arvo (I hope!) - wonder if there will be delays?... read more

Monday left the hotel Aloft ard 11.30am - found the massive bronze cattle herd on the Pioneer park opposite - very impressively large. Then over to Deeley Plaza again - where some conspiracy authors near the grasy knoll fence were selling their wares. One had interviewed other witnesses etc and had made 4 DVDs ($15 each - the set for $60) - the other had a publication with the JFK autopsy pix in it (used to work for the govt so its OK - otherwise ban on release for another 20 years??). Then down for the Trinity Rail over to Forth Worth - an hour. Walk to Sheraton down the road. Huge room with choice of beds. Then uptown to Sundance Square for wander around the shops - Retro Cowboy and one selling real cowboy boots ... read more

Sunday 30 Jan.11 In Dallas at the Adolphus til very late check out – they allow 1pm. Due to fact I was having a meltdown re “loss” of Ipod and all my digital information. Finally found it fallen into a slot in my pack – phew. Then rolled the bag over to new hotel 2 blocks away (down town Dallas fortunately quite small blocks) Aloft Dallas – a W Hotel – for the funky young things, a warehouse conversion and quite different from the Olde Worlde Adolphus. 14 feet ceilings and some exposed walls and different textures and colours. Then out for a walk – to the Dallas Museum of Art – a good African mask exhibition the main exhibition. And selection form their American moderns. Pity I only had an hour. A free trolley runs ... read more

San Fran to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) was the order of the day. Paranoid about being dumped from US flights got the 8.15 BART so was at airport before 9am fro 10.25 flight (unusual for me). American seem to fly the oldest airframes in the business – MD80 – that a DC9 like Ansett used to fly! The flight is 3 ½ hrs and they give you a can of pop – you are hardly done by on QF with dinner on domestic flights! Into DFW and bused (free) to the Remote South (carpark). Altho th trinity Railroad Express (TRE) runs Dallas-Ft Worth M-Fr + Sat (no Sun) with almost a 2 hr gap decided to try the 408 bus from there, change to 409 later. The bus was sitting there but left 10 mins late. All ... read more

Although I had thought of buying the one day transport pass to economically take at least one regulation cable car ride did not even manage that. Confined to the room with the need to book myself into some hotels in Dallas. Due to the labrynthine hotel bookings available via various providers this is a bit of a jungle and you almost have to look at 3 or 4 providers. I have previously used Booking.com as you only give your card details as a deposit guarantee against no shows. Anyway enuf frittering on details – this has gotta be seriously speeded up as it is now 31 Jan and I am in Fort Worth. I think now some Quick text and more pix – which some (ahem) might prefer. Decided as I had the BART ticket, and ... read more
