Trier Hauptmarkt
the main market square Monday morning the boys were of course off to work - and there were workmen arriving at 8.30am to work on the flat next door and to also replace a bit of under floor water pipe in A&M's flat (it comes thru form next door). As the owner of both flats Fernand explained to me, you cannot have external water pipes here as they would freeze up in the winter. The insulation here must be fab tho - I am typing this at 11pm in light jumper and thongs (to keep my feet off the floor) and its 10 deg. outside. It is just not cold inside at all - no heater on - and it does not seem that cold out either generally - altho 12 max. certainly not Blue Mountains cold.
I did not really go anywhere Mon. other than to meet the boys in town and get lost by getting off the bus way too early! - and walking around in circles and past plenty of places I had already seen. As I was so late we had some hot chocolates - then went and had some pasta at what the boys call the Communist Canteen -
an Italian club/ristorante.
Today Tuesday I made the short trip across the German border - 45 mins on commuter train - to Trier which supposedly has the oldest Roman ruins left in Europe. I took with me a 5.5 kilo parcel of a very heavy book of photos bought in Paris (3kgs) and got rid of all the CDs I had bought as well, mostly in Strasbourg + Paris. The Cathedral there, the Dom, is pretty impressive and unlike most other churches I have seen. Then to the Konstantin Basilika, which did not survive the WW2 bombers in 1944 and has been deliberately left very bare as a result. A pink and white palace next to that with formal gardens - and I missed out on getting to Karl Marx's birthplace which is nearby, but had to dash to get to the return train to Luxe.
Tomorrow Wed. I am off to Brugge in Belgium for 2 nights, then 3 nights in Bruxelles - then to Amsterdam I expect. Time is starting to run out now for the heavy cross-country haul to Prague and Budapest and Vienna. Krakow will miss the cut I think, but who knows!

Michael hi thanks for the birthday greetings, you had led us all into an expectation of a daily round up and so when there was no news it was a bit worrying!! We celebrated Pete's 50th last weekend a surprise party so this weekend which is his real birthday I'm hoping to celebrate with him at Hallidays. Mum is much better and not at all phased by the house full of people last weekend. Ive been enjoying your photos and at the same time re-living our own little jaunt thru that region. I'm glad you went back to the Museum in Colmar I loved it and I enjoyed the headphone commentary! It seems my dear that unless forced you don't give yourself enough time. Did you get your jacket? Have a great time in Brugge we really enjoyed it. Take care Melita
