Geo: -20.02, 57.58While Robert was still unable to move freely we decided to check out another possible place to stay or possibly go on a tour with them or get transport back across to Mahebourg. Finally found Ebrahaim Tours ( google maps failed us) and looked at their rooms which were quite nice and reasonably priced. They were also on the main drag right across from the beach. Maybe if we ever return. Unfortunately, the tour was another matter. Pushy lady at the desk, prices changing as we spoke, decided not to go with them. That night for dinner decided to check out Zorba's down on the waterfront. Newly opened and run by a Greek hoped for some good food. Nice portions but was not quite what we were expecting but still enjoyed the evening and then ... read more

Geo: -20.02, 57.58Because Robert's knee was bandaged where it was not easy to bend it, bicycling or hiking were pretty much out of the question so we took a break and enjoyed ourselves at the Sunset Grille right on the waterfront. We were able to work on our stories, watch people and just enjoy the scenery and relax for a couple of days.... read more

Geo: -20.02, 57.58Got up and fixed coffee and cereal and decided that Robert's leg did need some attention because the wound looked fairly deep. Asked Vivek where we should go and recommended a clinic nearby and called a taxi for us. Once again we were reminded that we need to carry copies of our passports with us always! They were able to treat Robert anyway. This Medical Center is very professional and well equipped for all types of treatment. The treatment: gave him some pain killing shots before they began to clean him up and gave him two stitches and did quite a bandage job on his knee and toe and some antibiotics. Total bill: 1515.24 rupees or $47!!! He will need to come back in five days to have the stitches removed. We were very impressed ... read more

Geo: -20.02, 57.58The trip across the island was very uneventful. There were few towns on the road we were on and no where the hustle and bustle of Madagascar. There were some nice moutains in the distance including one named Le Petite Matterhorn because it looks very much like a small version of the Matterhorn. The driver is also a tour guide so he gave us all sorts of tidbits of information as we rode along. Said you could drive around the island in a day and Mauritius had been ruled by both the French and British before becoming independent.Got to Grand Baie and found Auberge Miko and met Vivek and Lena, the owners. Lena is from Finland and Vivek from the island. Had an orientation session with them before seeing the room. Were told there ... read more

Geo: -20.4228, 57.7088Decided to have an adventure and bicycle over to Blue Bay which was around the island from Mahebourg. We were traveling on a two lane road but the drivers were very courteous and gave us the road as we traveled along. There were stunning views of the open water and Lions Head in the distance.chWe stopped at a new reserve for the mangroves and wetlands. It was low tide and there was not much water but there were a few birds in there hunting. Rode on and arrived at Blue Bay. Walked our bikes over to the public beach and rested, hydrated and had a snack.Watched people coming and going from boat tours around the island. Looks like this part of the island is exclusive hotels with very little public area right on the ... read more

Geo: -20.41, 57.7 One of the reasons we chose to stay at Le Bamboo was the fact they advertised free bikes and kayaks. Soo......the next morning after our delicious breakfast of eggs, crepe, fruit, coffee and fresh bread, we said we wanted to go kayaking! Oh no, there is a leak! Checked them out and does not seem to be a real bad leak and it was on the top of kayak and then Vishna also tells us some other guests had taken the boats out and had gone toward the bridge where the river heads to the ocean, got caught in current and were swept out to sea and had to be rescued by the Coast Guard. We assured him we only wanted to go the other direction. So, they helped us get the boats in ... read more

Geo: -18.7669, 46.8691 While we were still in Antananarivo Robert thought it might be a good idea to visit the Air Mauritius office and see if something could be done about having to pay overage on our baggage from Madagascar to Mauritius. She must have done something because we got all four bags through with no extra charge. There is a 60kg limit on baggage to be checked. We had lightened our load which also helped. We did have to pay extra on our carry on luggage but glad for the break in costs! Were picked up at the airport and taken to another place to find some wine and beer to have a night cap heading off to bed. Staying in same place but another of the rooms and it has great views of the river ... read more

Geo: -18.9154, 47.52We completed our packing and had arranged for help getting the bags down the stairs. Prettyt impressive watching guy put my large bag on shoulder and pick up one of the secondary bags with the other hand and run down four flights on stairs!Nice breakfast, said our goodbyes and we were off. This time spent more time taking pictures and looking at things as we headed back to Antananarivo. Stopped in Moramonga and changed some money so we could pay the driver when we got to Madagascar Underground.Uneventful trip but very colorful along the the way. Was Saturday and market day in most places we passed through so beautiful fruits, vegetables, cloths, and other wares displayed. It was also wash day and passed several places where the laundry was laid out to dry along ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Decided we would go on hike in the National Park. Stopped at Mitsinjo and they arranged for Youseffa to be our guide. Paid and headed into the park. Youseffa told us the Legend of the Indri indri. There are several versions but the one (as we understood it) is there was a young boy out in the forest looking for honey and he got lost and the indri indri found him and started calling and this alerted the village and he was saved. Because of this, it is "fady" taboo to eat the meat of the indri indri. According to research as cultural ties are breaking down this taboo is not being honored as much. More about the indri indri..There are four enemies of the indri indri--man, raptor, and the arbor snake. The arbor ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085nofrom the forest to the lawn went the lemurs and then we walked to Mitsinjo and left two more companions....the little chairs and then checked out the story boards at park Leaving the notes because in retrospect is funny about making the decision to donate things to Mitsinjo. We have another set of these chairs back home and these were right on the edge of falling to pieces! While we were eating breakfast some brown lemurs appeared across the stream from where we were. Started watching them because they appeared to be planning to cross the stream and come to our side and sure enough that is what they did! Went to the end of a branch and then LEAP across! Laughed as they looked around planning their next move. Did not swing on ... read more
