Ahhhh, the memories
Your blog brought back so many fabulous memories Linese. I spent a total of 7 days there - four at the start of the cycle and another three between visiting Burma & Lao, so I got to see and enjoy so much of this fabulous city. It is the one Asian city that I would love to return to. Cxxx

Waiting to go home

Excellent colors!
How lucky to be the only tourists at the very colorful market! It sounds as if Tuin was a really good guide to know when this elusive market met. Love the colors!

It really is China! Looks exactly the same as Guangxi Province... a few km north of the border.
Great pics!

Similar to China
Hi Jeremy, It is indeed very similar to China. We are actually in China at the moment but in the middle of Beijing smog not karsts unfortunately!

I've never done much research on Taiwan so it was good to read your blog. The photos look the way I thought it would. Looks like you are having a great time.

uneven footpaths
I'll try again! Enjoying your blogs, Linese. The uneven footpaths were not fun either in Taichung when trying to negotiate them with a stroller when I was there last year! Not exactly wheelchair friendly - I saw a man in a wheelchair being pushed down the middle of a busy street, weaving between the traffic- scary, but he was laughing! Love to you and Gerry. Take care and have fun. All well with us thanks.

Footpaths
Hi Jane, Rather you than me! I would hate to be responsible for a toddler in a stroller on those footpaths....

Trimming the trees in the park.

Off the beaten path..
I love that you two are following the less-traveled east side of the country. And what troopers to venture out in the crowds and heat. Great photos!

The glorious blu colour of the sea at Qingshui Cliffs

Great gorge!
Gorgeous photos and the walks sound lovely. I, too, dislike tours, but this sounded worth it, while the bikes would have been scary! Interesting that people don't eat in the park (or even cook), when here in South America, people are constantly snacking everywhere.

Looks amazing
Having a heated toilet seat must have been a small compensation for the countless times when the "amenities" have been challenging! And as for the ice cream....hmmmmm!!!! Taiwan sounds and looks amazing. It's on the bucket list. Cxx

Lao Cai to Yuantang
I've been reading your blog with great interest. Its very funny when I started to read because I have been doing about the same trip back in 2002 as you did. Now 12 years on, I will also go to Jack's Guesthouse by the end of this year. Above that, I was on the very same crossing from Lao Cai into China this past may. The frist thing what I said to my travel partner describe the same words as in your blog. "WOW, this border crossing has changed so significantly since my first visit back then". I remember crossing the border from China into Vietnam (yes I did the opposite route), arriving in Vietnam, it took me hours untill my passport was stamped in a small concrete bunker, before I was allowed to enter Vietnam. You might like to read my trip report at my website. Im not allowed to give you the web address but just change the info on my email address into double U's and you're there. One thing I was wondering...how far is the distance from Jacky's Gueshouse to the center of town please ? I have booked 3 nights at Jacky's GH. Thank you, Eddy

A gold Mayan bird figure

Not Mayan gold pice
This piece is not mayan. Is a Costa Rican precolumbian gold pendant, most influenced by the south Chibchas cultures.
